When Inspiration Meets Perspiration! - Kitchener-Waterloo ...

On June 12 th and 13 th , KCI Art students
returned to the Waterloo Arts
Festival for a second year. This
time 10 students took part and
proudly showcased their work,
which included paintings, photographs,
custom T-Shirts and sock
monkeys.
KCI Art teachers, Ms. Atkins and
Mr. Panda, also assembled a showing
of student work created at the
annual BAA (Big Art Adventure)
this time to Toronto and, with the
help of alumni and festival visitors,
hosted the painting of sixteen community
murals.
While we hope that these paintings
will soon be on display somewhere
in the community, we are planning
a showing at next year’s After
Hours to be held on Wednesday,
November 24 th .

KCI KCI Outreach!
Outreach!
This April, eight students and staff combined
forces with members of Huron
Heights Secondary School to participate in
an Outreach trip to Cuba. After some trials
and tribulations (initially we were to visit
Honduras but there was a coup; then we
planned a trip to Chile, and there was a devastating
earthquake) we eventually found
ourselves on Cuban soil.
Outreach has been built into the grade 11
geography course entitled The Americas
and focuses on the Me to We concept of
"putting others first."
We volunteered for the week at an organic
farm alongside farmers earning under $1.00
a day. The farmers would work from sun
up to sun down, many of them 7 days a
week. What an experience learning about
how most people in the world live. Even in
Cuba, where literacy and health care are
priorities, most people live on a pittance,
with little room for advancement.
We also had some amazing cultural experiences
like visiting the old city of Havana, a
UNESCO world heritage area, as well as
Revolution Square and the Che Memorial in
Santa Clara.
KCI JAzZ Band … rocks Uptown Waterloo with Free Concert
On Friday, May 14th, the KCI JazZ Band performed a free outdoor concert in the Uptown
Waterloo Public Square. (Thank goodness it wasn’t Friday the 13 th !!) For days prior to
the event the story was rain, rain, rain. But the morning of the event the clouds parted and
the sun burst forth! What excitement for the 14 enthusiastic students who were ready to
share their music with the world!
The band rocked the downtown by playing 9 funky tunes including tunes by Coldplay and
the Steve Miller Band. The City of Waterloo was busy counting the audience and reported
that over 400 Waterlooeans enjoyed the concert. Special thanks to Mr. and Mrs.
Acorn who provided and managed the sound system that made the band sound great! The
band was also honoured by being suggested to play in the Waterloo Uptown Jazz Festival
this summer. The event was such a success there is no doubt this will become a new annual
event for the band.

While at the jobsite you will also improve
communication skills, reliability,
initiative, and the ability to work with
others - skills for life and being part of
a work force.

jobs through their coop experience.
