6. FLEXIBLE SUB – ASSEMBLY / FLAT PANEL PRODUCTION LINE FOR MID-SIZE
SHIPYARDS
Presented by: Harry Kartano, Pemamek Oy, Finland
Flexible flat panel production lines can be tailor-made for small and mid-size shipyards. The flexible
production line includes one- or two-sided plate butt welding, longitudinal profile assembling & welding
station and web welding utilising a vision robot. Patented Visio robot is an efficient and user friendly
welding station, which is very easy to implement to production line and use by normal welders. New
welding floor type conveyor line enables the welding of micro panels and full size flat panels in the same
line.
15 th IIW WG Shipbuilding Meeting
9. PROSPECTIVE STUDY ABOUT JOINING TECHNOLOGIES IN THE SPANISH
SHIPBUILDING SECTOR.
Presented by: Aimen Technology Centre , Porrino – Pontevedra, Spain
LASER REVOLUTION IN SHIPBUILDING
10. CURRENT LASER RELATED PROJECTS IN EUROPEAN SHIPBUILDING
Presented by: Dr. Ing. F. Roland, Managing Director, Centre of Maritime Technologies, Hamburg,
Germany.
Laser and Hybrid welding offer a number of significant advantages to shipbuilding, which include high
productivity, improved quality and accuracy. These benefits have been widely discussed in various
publications. Germany is leading worldwide in the application and development of laser technologies, in
particular in the maritime field.
11. LASER HYBRID WELDING at the STX EUROPE GROUP (Aker Yards), FINLAND
Presented by: Kari S. Laiho, Manager, Grand Block & Hull Assembly, HULL Production in Turku, Finland.
The STX Europe Group of shipyards have three shipyards in Finland. The yards are mainly building cruise
ships and ferries. The biggest of the three yards is located in Turku in south west of Finland and the
world’s biggest cruise ships are built there. Since the cruise ships are becoming larger, the weight
optimisation has got significant role in the current cruise shipbuilding. More or less the weight optimisation
means thinner materials and more complex structures. Due to that fact total weld length of the hull is
increasing. The than called Aker Yards has implemented laser hybrid welding in production use in 2006.
12. HYBRID WELDING OF DUPLEX STAINLESS STEEL FOR SHIPBUILDING
INDUSTRY
Presented by: A. Vandewynckéle, E. Vaamonde Couso, M. Pèrez de Lama, G. Quintáns Rodriguez,
Aimen Technology Centre and Factorias Vulcano S. A., Spain
Hybrid laser welding has demonstrated its robustness for industrial use and is now employed in a very
wide application field. In the of shipbuilding industry, one of the major benefits of using laser hybrid
welding processes is the decreases of distortion level compared to traditional arc welding processes. This
benefit is even more accused when welding high coefficient of expansion steels, such as duplex stainless
steels. Duplex stainless steels are used for chemical and oil tankers.
13. PROCESS AND PRODUCTION CONTROL IN LASER BEAM WELDING
Presented by: Dr.Stefan Kaierle, Fraunhofer Institut Lasertechnik , Aachen, Germany.
Laser results for process control of leaser beam welding are presented and discussed. Although laser
processing can be implemented as separate manufacturing steps, the full benefits can be exploited in an
integrated set-up. The complex interplay between planning, production and control will be highlighted . In
order to implement laser solution with a maximum benefit can be obtained by a multi-disciplinary
approach. A discussion on this will lead to find currently needed R&D topics.
18:00 DINNER WITH ALL PARTICIPANTS
15 th IIW WG Shipbuilding Meeting
AGENDA
for Wednesday, December 2 nd ,2009
9:00 OPENING
1. DISTORTION “O”: Prediction and control of distortion in thin section panel
fabrication on shipbuilding sector.
DO consortium: Factorias Vulcano, Hijos de J. Barreras, Construcciones Navales P. Freire, TYM Ganain,
Construcciones y Transformaciones Navales, Montajes Naval Gallega, Carenaga, Montajes Novarue,
Aimen Technology Centre. Presentation will be given by Ms Mar Rodriguez
2. INDUCTION HEAT STRAIGHTENING – A distortion rework reduction tool for
thin plate.
Presented by: Dr. Norman McPherson and Mark Wells, BVT Surface Fleet Ltd and EFD Induction,
England.
Thin plate distortion in the shipbuilding sector has been studied for decades, but the problem continues in
some form or another. In addition to this , there has been a gradual move to include more thin plate into
the structure of naval vessels in particular. This normally in the form of high strength steels. Thin plate
distortion can be brought to what could be considered manageable levels. However , the work required to
further reduce the level of distortion will be achieved through incrementally small gains, which currently
could be very costly. To generate the step change at this low level, an alternative is to develop a more
efficient and controllable process of heat straightening.
3. PREDICTION OF DISTORTION IN THE WELDING OF PANELS OF FINE PLATE
OF CARBON STEEL, STAINLESS STEEL AND ALUMINIUM ALLOYS.
I.Aramburu , A. Bermejo , R. Ocana, J. Canas , E. Novoa, Fundacion InaSmet-Tecnalia ; E.T.S.I.
Industriales de Sevilla; Soermar
The objective of this report is the validation of different prediction models, on test pieces of carbon steel,
stainless steel and aluminium joints, materials that are used in shipbuilding with 6 mm thickness, and
they are welded by means of FCAW, MIG (for aluminium alloys) and SAW processes.
