Course content<br />
Core module<br />
The core module equips students with the advanced study skills they need to operate at MA level. It deals with key debates<br />
and theories in the study <strong>of</strong> history, as well as research methods and the use <strong>of</strong> sources. Like other modules, it comprises a<br />
mix <strong>of</strong> teaching and learning tools:<br />

Two further specialist modules are chosen by all students. Modules are as follows:<br />

US Foreign and Domestic Policy 1945-2000<br />
Terrorism in its Social and Psycho-Historical Context<br />
Race, Empire and Colonisation<br />
Behaving Badly: From Deviance to Modernity<br />
Science, Magic and Religion<br />
Religion, Doubt and Secularism in Victorian England<br />
The Protestant Reformation and the Arts<br />
The Hospital in History<br />
Medical Ethics and Ideas<br />
Eugenics and Biopolitics in Europe<br />
Pills and Potions<br />
Madness and Society<br />
Independent Study Module<br />
Dissertation module<br />
This module allows students to investigate a specialist topic <strong>of</strong> their choice, culminating in the submission <strong>of</strong> a dissertation <strong>of</strong><br />
up to 15,000 words. Students can access the world-class resources <strong>of</strong> <strong>Oxford</strong>’s Bodleian Library and support is available at<br />
every stage <strong>of</strong> the process, including individual tutorials, and workshops on research techniques and sources.<br />
n Students can choose to study either full-time (1 year) or part-time (2 years)<br />
n Teaching takes place in the evening and there are no exams<br />
n Past students have gone on to work in doctoral research, archive management, history teaching, the civil<br />
service, publishing and local politics<br />
The MA History course has been really enjoyable and engaging. The core module was<br />
particularly useful as it helped me to expand my knowledge <strong>of</strong> the field and develop the<br />
skills I’ll need for the future. It was invaluable in helping me make the transition from BA<br />
to MA level study.<br />
