(EA-SWMC)<br />

<strong>EU</strong>-<strong>Asia</strong> <strong>Sustainable</strong> <strong>Waste</strong> <strong>Management</strong> <strong>Cycle</strong> : Integrating Best Practices of Solid <strong>Waste</strong> <strong>Management</strong><br />

Policies (EA-SWMC) is a project supported by the <strong>Asia</strong> Pro-Eco Programme of the <strong>Europe</strong>an Commission (EC) and<br />

jointly promoted by the National Solid <strong>Waste</strong> <strong>Management</strong> Department, Perak State Government (PSG), The<br />

Association of Environmental Consultants and Companies of Malaysia (AECCOM), The INTA International Urban<br />

Development Assoiciation (INTA) from The Netherlands; ICEI <strong>Europe</strong>an Secretariat GmbH from Germany; Danish Topic<br />

Centre on <strong>Waste</strong> and Resources (DTC/WR) from Denmark and Shropshire County Council from United Kingdom.<br />

Objective<br />

The main objectives of EA-SWMC is to implement measures that will ensure the management of solid waste and<br />

cleansing process complies with environment best practices.<br />

It serves to safeguard public health and welfare in a joint effort with multi stakeholders towards achieving waste<br />

minimization and recycling of valuable resources pillared on the principle of sustainable development which will<br />

promote the development and adoption of less-polluting and more-resource efficient products, processes and services.<br />

This project encourages between the <strong>EU</strong> and <strong>Asia</strong> on the exchange and application of environmental policies,<br />

technologies, and practices that promote a better quality of life and encourage tripartite co-operation among<br />

institutions, business and local communities thus achieving the noble objective of civil society. The Project will initiate<br />

a solid waste management plan and thus improving environment performance based on joint effort of all invited<br />

stakeholders.<br />

<strong>Asia</strong> Pro Eco Programme<br />

<strong>Asia</strong> Pro Eco is an <strong>Europe</strong>an Union (<strong>EU</strong>) initiative that aims to fund <strong>EU</strong>-<strong>Asia</strong> partnership projects specifically in the field<br />

of the Urban-Environment. The objective of <strong>Asia</strong> Pro Eco is to draw the <strong>EU</strong> and <strong>Asia</strong> closer together through institutional<br />

and operational partnerships and networks to tackle major issues on the protection and remediation of the urban<br />

environment. The programme aims to promote the sharing of innovative technologies, best practices, policies,<br />

measures, and capacity-building which can improve the quality of life and environmental conditions of urban<br />

populations in <strong>Asia</strong>.<br />

Target Groups<br />

The target groups of this project consist of urban environmental officers such as government officers in charge of solid<br />

waste management from federal and state government as well as local authorities, urban environmental Non-<br />

Government Organisations (NGOs) and Community-Based Organisations (CBO), institution of higher learning and<br />

research institutions, representatives of private sector involved in solid waste management such as recycling<br />

companies, waste management concessionaires, environmental consultants and contractors providing various services<br />

such as equipment supplies, laboratory testing services, technology consultancy, environmental engineering and<br />

monitoring services as well as the local communities.<br />

<strong>Management</strong> <strong>Cycle</strong> (EA-SWMC)<br />

The EA-<strong>Asia</strong> Solid <strong>Waste</strong> <strong>Management</strong> Conference will be held on 29-30 October 2008. The focus of this<br />

conference would be on strategic issues and key aspects related to policy governance of solid waste<br />

management best practices. The themes of discussion include A: <strong>EU</strong>-Malaysia Solid <strong>Waste</strong> <strong>Management</strong> Policy,<br />

B(I): Malaysia Policy and Regulatory Framework, B(II): Technology Innovations for Future Solid <strong>Waste</strong> <strong>Management</strong>,<br />

C: <strong>EU</strong> Policy and Regulatory Framework on Solid <strong>Waste</strong> <strong>Management</strong>, D(I): Economic Instrument and Financing<br />

Methods and D(II): Best Practices and Case Studies.<br />

The secretariat is pleased to invite interested individuals or organisations to submit their synopsis of presentation<br />

papers. All papers must be written in English and contain no more than 600 words. Speakers whose abstracts are<br />

accepted will be expected to prepare a power-point presentation for use at the Conference’s session. Please indicate<br />

which session of the themes you intend to present your paper. Kindly submit your synopsis of presentation and<br />

biography before 30 April 2008 to the Conference Secretariat via e-mail to info@ea-swmc.org<br />
