1840 - 1850 Album of Watercolours and Pencil Drawings featuring the Nile, Aden, and India by Sarah Jane Layard - Close relation of Sir Henry Austen Layard - Artistic Renderings of Nile and Red Sea Views Quarto oblong album, period brown tooled leather, measuring approximately 11 inches x 8 inches (29cm x 20cm). Contains 17 original watercolours 28 drawings on 43 leafs, several with manuscript captions and dates, most with the artist's initials. Front endpaper bears the artist's signature, dated 1850. Minor wear to extremities, otherwise in very good condition. The artist is Sarah Jane Layard, née Margery, (1792-1885), aunt to the famous Sir Henry Austen Layard - excavator of Nineveh and Nimrud. Mrs. Layard's art features skilful hand drawings and watercolours from extensive travels along the Red Sea, in India, and in Egypt. Some drawings pertain to family, and a nostalgic watercolour collage of lettermail bears pasted cuttings of various letterhead insignia and used postage stamps. A substantial album featuring the Nile, Yemen, and India, from the family of Sir Henry Austen Layard, compiled during the height of his archaeological excavations in the East. 38
One of the earliest works is a vibrantly coloured scene of ships sailing on the Nile in November 1843. The town of Suez and the desert shores of the Gulf are beautifully represented in full colour double-page view. Equally captivating are Mount Horeb and Mount Sinai seen from the Red Sea. A rare highlight, Yemen is also pictured in Mrs. Layard's artistic hand, illustrating a strategically poised lighthouse on the volcanic island Perim, off the southwestern coast of Yemen. A view of Mocha dated 2 November 1855 is inscribed 'coffee gardens'; another illustrates the strait of Bab-el-Mandeb or 'The Gate of Grief.' A reminiscent watercolour shows the artist's temporary home in Aden, 1847. These visual memoires of the Arabian Peninsula date to same period as the important work of her nephew, Sir Austen Henry Layard, in Nineveh and Nimrud. Of Poona (now Pune), she draws a Brahmin college & temple, the Jejuri temple in 1862, an ancient ruined wall, and nomadic desert people as seen in 1858. Unique and Beautiful! $3,750 39
