Zeisset History Tour<br />

August 1-10, 2006<br />

With Tour Leaders: John Ruth, Loretta Hoerman, Paul Zeisset<br />

This 10-day tour explores the German roots <strong>of</strong> the descendants <strong>of</strong> Jakob and Margaretha<br />

Műller, whose six children, Louise, Bertha, Lizzie, Jacob, Betty, and Henry, emigrated to the<br />

Leonardville, Kansas, area between 1883 and 1893.<br />

Tuesday & Wednesday, August 1 & 2<br />

Departure from Kansas City or Washington-Dulles on an overnight Lufthansa flight to Frankfurt. On arrival<br />

in Frankfurt on Wednesday morning, we will start our Zeisset Family History tour by visiting Semd to see<br />

the church where Margaretha Müller, the wife <strong>of</strong> Jakob Zeisset, was baptized in 1842. If there is time, we<br />

want to visit Lengfeld, where Margaretha’s great-grandmother was born, and Überau, where Margaretha’s<br />

father was born. Then we will continue on to Bad Kreuznach, the Pfrimmerh<strong>of</strong> and the Weierh<strong>of</strong> to learn<br />

about the Mennonite story in these areas <strong>of</strong> the Palatinate. Overnight in Alzey.<br />

Thursday, August 3<br />

We will go first to Sinsheim and see a house where Mennonites held secret worship services. Then it’s <strong>of</strong>f<br />

to Ehrstädt, Hasselbach and Rauh<strong>of</strong>. Rauh<strong>of</strong> is where the Zeissets came from when they left Switzerland in<br />

the early 1700s, and Abraham Zeisset was a minister here. We will drive to Menzingen, where the Zeissets<br />

lived from 1825-1850, and through Bockschaft, Berwangen and stop at Dammh<strong>of</strong> where the Baers lived<br />

since the mid-1700s. Lodging in Bad Friedrichshall.<br />

Friday, August 4<br />

We will begin the day on Friday by driving to H<strong>of</strong>gut Willenbach and Lautenbach; the Zeissets were here<br />

with other Mennonite families from 1786-1825. We will visit Sindolsheim where the Zeisset family settled<br />

in 1850, and Adelsheim, where Jakob and Margaretha were married in 1864. Then it’s on to Öhringen<br />

(Cappel) where the Bletschers lived before coming to America and on to Schwäbisch Hall where we will<br />

stay for two nights.<br />

Saturday, August 5<br />

This morning we will drive to Orlach and Niedersteinach where Henry and Betty Zeisset lived after their<br />

father, Jakob’s, death in 1884. Jakob’s brother and aunt also lived here. In Schrozberg we will see church<br />

records <strong>of</strong> the baptisms <strong>of</strong> the six Zeisset immigrants and then drive to Kreuzfeld where the six brothers<br />

and sisters were born. We will enjoy visiting Rothenburg ob der Tauber, an old, picturesque and unspoiled<br />

town on the Romantic Road. Then it’s back to Schwäbisch Hall.<br />

Sunday, August 6<br />

Sunday morning we will worship at St. Michael’s Church in Schwäbisch Hall before going to Ulm to see the<br />

great cathedral there with the tallest church spire in the world at 528 feet. In Blaubeuren we will see the<br />

Blautopf (Blue Pot) and the great altar in the monastery. In Rottenburg we will hear the Michael Sattler<br />

story and see the memorial stone to Michael and Margaretha Sattler who died for their faith. Overnight in<br />

Freudenstadt.<br />

Monday, August 7<br />

We will enjoy the drive today through the Black Forest region as we make our way to Freiburg. We will go<br />

to Weiseil to meet with the Zeisset family still living in Germany. This will be a wonderful experience if all<br />

the details work out. Lodging in Offenburg.<br />

Tuesday, August 8<br />

Today we will visit Heidelberg on the banks <strong>of</strong> the Neckar River to see the castle from which we will get a<br />

wonderful view <strong>of</strong> the town, the Neckar valley and the Rhineland plain. We will have a guided tour <strong>of</strong> the<br />

castle. Then we will travel on to Worms to hear the Martin Luther story in this place. We will be lodged in<br />

Alzey for two nights.<br />

Wednesday, August 9<br />

Before enjoying a cruise on the Rhine River, we will stop at the Deutsches Eck at the confluence <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Rhine and Mosel rivers for a scenic view. Relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery, vineyards, castles and<br />

towns as we cruise from Boppard to Bacharach, the most scenic part <strong>of</strong> the river. We will have our farewell<br />

dinner at the hotel in Alzey.<br />

Thursday, August 10<br />

All too soon we will be on our Lufthansa flight from Frankfurt back to Washington-Dulles or Kansas City.<br />

We will return with new understandings <strong>of</strong> the life <strong>of</strong> our ancestors, beautiful pictures, memories and new<br />

friendships formed while on tour.<br />

John Ruth, from Harleysville, Pennsylvania, is a minister, author, and filmmaker who enjoys sharing<br />

Mennonite history through storytelling. He has led numerous tours for TourMagination.<br />

Loretta Hoerman, from Topeka, Kansas, has studied our German roots and visited these sites more than<br />

anyone else, and she will help us understand Zeisset history as we see these places.<br />

Paul Zeisset, from Virginia, maintains the Zeisset Genealogy web site (zeissetgenealogy.n3.net), has led<br />

recent Zeisset reunions in Leonardville, and is the Zeisset family representative who will look after the<br />

tour details as we travel.<br />
