2013|14 season

“Company of the year. The National Ballet of Canada gets the
worldwide profile it deserves.”
The Globe and Mail, 2011
“Extraordinary skill, versatility and spirit.”
Los Angeles Times, 2012
“Stamina, guts and passion are what define this company
right now.”
National Post, 2013
“I hope for a return visit from this wonderful company in the
near, rather than distant, future.”
Dance Europe, 2013
I can’t think of a better time to join us as a
subscriber and experience this special energy!
The past season was an especially memorable and exciting one for
The National Ballet of Canada. For the first time in a great many years
we undertook a substantial international touring schedule and were
greeted with plaudits by critics and audiences alike. Our dancers were
clearly galvanized by the experience and their energy sent ripples
throughout the entire company. You can feel that there is a new vigour
and character to the National Ballet right now. It’s a freshness in our
approach and attitude that stems from the combination of our superb
classical command and our spirited embrace of the contemporary. We
are, as they say, on a roll. And that’s reflected in both our repertoire
and our performances.
Sincerely,
“What makes Swan Lake such a favourite ballet is the sheer
beauty of the dancing”
Toronto Star
Presented by
Swan Lake
November 9—17, 2013
March 8—16, 2014 Perfect for March Break!
Swan
Lake
One of the central works of the classical ballet canon, and one of the most enduringly
resonant and deeply affecting of all works of theatrical art, Swan Lake has enthralled
audiences since its premiere in Moscow in 1877. Set to a timeless and famously
evocative score by Tchaikovsky, the ballet is marked by a thematic and stylistic dynamism
that embraces the fantastic and mythic while remaining rooted in the most universal of
human emotions.
Swan Lake retains the captivating, 19th-century fairy-tale quality of the ballet while
grounding the narrative in a richly suggestive earthiness that accentuates the tension
between the sensual and the ethereal, the natural and the supernatural. The new
emotional and thematic complexities that are revealed in James Kudelka’s re-telling of the
story are heightened and complemented by Santo Loquasto’s exquisite and vibrant sets
and costumes, both conveying the ballet’s tragic beauty and powerful effect with
consummate artistry.
Innovation
November 22—28, 2013
James Kudelka
The National Ballet of Canada’s Innovation series presents three cutting edge world
premieres by exceptional Canadian choreographers in one dazzlingly eclectic programme
of dance. This season the series features the outstanding and singular talents of Robert
Binet, José Navas and James Kudelka.
Toronto native and Canada's National Ballet School graduate Robert Binet is just
embarking on his career as a choreographer, but already the Choreographic Apprentice
with The Royal Ballet has created works for Wayne McGregor/Random Dance, the
National Ballet’s YOU Dance programme, the second company of The Hamburg Ballet,
Estonian Ballet and New York City Ballet’s Choreographic Institute.
Venezuelan-born and Montréal-based José Navas studied in Caracas and at the Merce
Cunningham Studio in New York City, before moving to Canada in 1991. He founded
Compagnie Flak in 1995 and has since choreographed over 30 ballets for both stage and
film, touring his works extensively.
James Kudelka is one of Canada’s best-known and most highly-regarded
choreographers, whose ballets range from new versions of the classical repertoire, such
as Swan Lake, The Nutcracker and Cinderella, to highly innovative shorter works. His
ballets have been staged the world over.
“Our second Innovation series brings together three really
brilliant and very different Canadian choreographers and
promises an extraordinary evening of new and cutting
edge dance.”
“A Month in the Country is a masterly haiku which
compresses all the emotion of a long, wordy play, into
40 minutes of glorious dance.”
The Daily Telegraph
A Month in
Watch her &
A Month in the Country
February 26—March 2, 2014
Edmonton-born Azure Barton’s delicately layered but vigorously imagined Watch her
dazzled audiences when it premiered with The National Ballet of Canada in 2009. Set to
Lera Auerbach's interpretation of Pergolesi’s famous Dialogues on Stabat Mater, the work
is a mesmerizing evocation of a spiritual state achieved through the physical vocabulary of
dance. The idea of being perceived and how that conditions and situates the human body
in both spatial and emotional terms, lends the work its powerful thematics as well as its
focused energy. Watch her is the work of a formidable dance artist at her most compelling.
A marvel of narrative compression and choreographic economy, Sir Frederick Ashton’s
affecting and engaging A Month in the Country is one of the great English choreographer’s
finest ballets. Created for The Royal Ballet in 1975, with Lynn Seymour and Anthony
Dowell in the principal roles, the adaptation of Turgenev’s story has attracted many of
ballet’s greatest dancers. In 1995, Anthony Dowell himself set the work on The National
Ballet of Canada, with Karen Kain and Robert Conn in the lead roles. It was the first time
the work had been performed by a company other than The Royal Ballet.
negin
Onegin
March 19—23, 2014
John Cranko was one of modern ballet’s greatest interpreters of literary works, and his
trademark skill with drama, character and the unfolding and shaping of narrative was never
more fully displayed than in his 1965 version of Alexander Pushkin’s classic verse novel
Eugene Onegin. Employing the arch-romantic sonorities of Tchaikovsky’s music, Cranko
breathes fresh and insightful life into the story of the jaded aristocrat Eugene Onegin, who
callously trifles with the affections of the trusting, innocent country girl, Tatiana, only to
have the tables turned years later when a very changed Tatiana rejects him.
This familiar but potent meditation on ill-starred love and tragic irony is given a bold
and fresh revision in Cranko’s ballet, especially in his approach to the character of Tatiana,
whose maturation from the shy, vulnerable girl of the first act to the poised, self-possessed
woman of the finale is a wonder of dramatic transformation.
The breathtaking sets and costumes by veteran stage designer Santo Loquasto
complete this heartrending portrait of human frailty and the often cruel vicissitudes of love.
“/5 Electrifying... an evening of ballet that was
nothing short of magical.”
“Impressively original... mysterious, innovative
and enthralling”
Channel Rivera, Cannes, France
presents
Spectre
de la Rose
Spectre de la Rose &
Opus 19/The Dreamer &
the second detail
May 28—June 1, 2014
Michel Fokine’s landmark 1911 ballet Le Spectre de la Rose has been lavishly re-imagined
by the exciting young Choreographer-in-Residence with Stuttgart Ballet, Marco Goecke.
While preserving the central dynamic between The Young Girl and The Spirit of the Rose,
Goecke has added both dancers and music to the ballet, creating a broader thematic and
choreographic context in which the work can unfold. Goecke’s fresh reading of this great
modern classic is a genuine revelation.
Jerome Robbins’ work traversed the spectrum of modern dance, from Broadway
shows to severe abstraction, but whether in narrative or non-narrative situations, his
ballets always take delight in the emotive and expressive possibilities of human movement.
His late work Opus 19/The Dreamer is the abstract Robbins and, set to Prokofiev’s Violin
Concerto No.1 in D Major, exemplifies beautifully the tensions in his work and personality
between the bold experimenter and the inconsolable romantic.
The arch antagonist of received ballet wisdom, William Forsythe’s choreographic
provocations have earned him as much notoriety as acclaim. Yet beneath the anarchic
comedy, the fiercely deconstructive and random-seeming surface of a work such as the
second detail there lurks an ungainly but defiant elegance, a vision of dance that forces us
to look anew at ballet’s meanings and potentialities.
Cinderella
June 4—15, 2014
“A masterpiece… the finest Cinderella in the world, bar none.”
The Globe and Mail
Many choreographers have been drawn to the Cinderella story as a ballet subject, and for
very good reason. Replete with themes of transformation, love thwarted and found, familial
discord, broad humour and wonderfully malleable characterization, the story offers a rich
palette of dramatic and comedic opportunity. As well, the surprising, shape-shifting
ebullience of Prokofiev’s score adds to the surreal, touching fabulism of the popular story
and its choreographic potential.
James Kudelka’s version of Cinderella takes full advantage of these wonderful
possibilities, giving the material a touch that is both riotously comic and deeply affecting.
In Kudelka’s hands, the crispness and athleticism of the classical idiom melds with the
often startling kineticism of the modern to shape a fresh re-telling of the well-known
fairy tale in which Cinderella’s journey is less a conventional rags to riches narrative than
an archetypal romance in which love finds its fruition in the restoration of a natural order.
The Art Deco-inspired sets and costumes by David Boechler and the innovative
lighting design by Christopher Dennis complete this visually stunning and totally
beguiling production.
National Post
presents
The Nutcracker
December 14, 2013—January 4, 2014
The National Ballet’s sumptuous, comical, touching and spellbinding version of E.T.A.
Hoffmann’s Christmas tale was created in 1995 and has been enthralling audiences –
especially children – ever since. It is a refreshingly traditional version of the story, replete
with the details of childhood dreams and the appeal of fantasy, a ballet gloriously designed
and costumed and brimming with affection for and insight into the passage from childhood
to maturity that all children make.
Re-setting the story to Imperial Russia, with its simple folk customs and its overwhelming
opulence, choreographer James Kudelka allows full rein to both his instincts for everyday
beauty and dazzling spectacle, for natural wonder and dreamlike astonishment, all
conveyed in an array of breathtaking choreography. The entire production is a glittering,
enchanting gem of a ballet, a work that is at once deeply familiar and forever new.
