"The golden goose
That's the way the president of the Upper
Township Board of Education described it recently
in discussing how the building boom has sent
School enrollments soaring with the result that
the school tax rate in the township is shooting up
53 percent this year
No longer can Upper residents and, especially,
homeowners be swure in the
e that revenues from the electric com
[enerating station in Beesley's Point will
pany
provide the near free ride that township tax
payers have grown accustomed to
Things aren't hopeless by any means After all,
the millions of dollars coming in via the gross
receipts and franchise tax still enable the Township
Committee to put together a municipal
budget needing no local taxes.
But the handwriting is clearly on the blackboard.
This year, for example, the Committee
members are cutting back on the amount of funds
they have traditionally given the School Board
to subsidize the schools and keep the school tax
down,
Officials are fearful the amount the township
gets in the way of free money from the electric
utility will gradually be decreasing as other
municipalities across the state clamor for a
bigger piece of the gross receipts pie.
The people crunch is very real now in the
township It's no longer just a possibility that
more people will bring more demands on government
services.
Besides higher school taxes and the serious
consideration of a regionalized school system,
what's next? A police department, A paid fire
department. City water,,,
The country's being taken out of the township.
