Standard specifications for Masonry 1. CEMENT MORTAR The mortar will be measured on the basis of volume. Cement mortar of ratio 1:4 (cement: coarse sand) will be used for general repair, 1:3 (cement: coarse sand) for tile work and 1:2 will be used for plastering cornice, sunshades etc. unless otherwise mentioned. The measured quantity of sand shall be leveled in a big metal box and cement emptied on top of it. The cement and sand shall be thoroughly mixed dry by being turned over and over, backward and forward, several times till the mixture is of a uniform color. Mortar shall be used as soon as possible after mixing and before it has begin to set and in any case before half an hour shall be rejected and removed from the site of work. 2. CEMENT CONCRETE Proportioning shall be done by volume. Boxes of suitable size shall be used for measuring sand and aggregate. While measuring the aggregate, shaking, reaming or heaping shall not be done. The proportioning of sand shall be on the basis of its dry volume. Mixing shall be done in mechanical mixer. Mixing by hand shall be employed only in special cases with the specific prior permission. In case of machine mixing the mixer drum shall be flushed cleaned with water. Measured quantity of dry coarse aggregate shall be placed first in hopper. This shall be followed with measured quantity of fine aggregate and then cement. The materials shall be mixed for a period not less than 2 minutes and until a uniform color and consistency is obtained. The time shall be counted from the moment all the materials have been put into drum. If in special case hand mixing being used shall be done on a smooth, clean and water tight platform of suitable size in the following manner; I. Measured quantity of sand shall be spread evenly over the platform. II. The cement shall be dumped on the sand and mixed evenly. III. The sand and cement shall be mixed with spade, turning the mixture over and over again, until it is in even color throughout. IV. The sand cement mixture shall be mixed with measured quantity of aggregate. This shall be mixed at least three times by shoveling and turning over by twist from the center to sides. V. A hole shall be made in the middle of the mixed pipe. VI. Then water shall be added gradually and mix it until uniform color and consistency is obtained throughout the pipe. Page 6 of 6
After the concrete laid and begun to harden i.e. about 2 hours after its laying it shall be protected with moist gunny begs. After 24 hours of laying the concrete the surface shall be cured by flooding with water for a minimum period of 7 to 10 days or as directed. 3. BRICK WORK The bricks shall be adequately soaked in stacks before use with clean water at regular intervals to keep them wet. The brick shall be laid in English bond unless otherwise specified. Half or cut bricks shall not be used except where necessary to complete the bond. The brickwork shall be done in cement mortar of ratio 1:4 (1 cement: 4 coarse sand). A layer of mortar shall be spread on full width of wall and each brick shall be properly bedded and set in position by gently tapping. All vertical joints shall be fully filled with mortar. The wall shall be taken up truly plumb and it shall be truly horizontal & vertical to the ground level. The thickness of joints shall not exceed ½” In case of old brick work, the old brick work shall be toothed to the full width of new wall and to the depth of quarter of a brick in alternate courses. It shall be cleaned of all dust, loose mortar etc and thoroughly wetted before work shall be make equal to the thickness of the corresponding course of the old work by adjusting thickness of horizontal mortar joints. 4. ROUGH CAST/SPECKLED PLASTER Rough cast/speckled finish comprises of a mixture of sand and gravel in specified proportions dashed over a freshly plastered surface. Before applying plaster, the joints shall be raked out, dust and loose mortars shall be brushed out, and the surface shall be thoroughly washed with water, cleaned and kept wet before plastering is commenced. The under layer shall be of 1: 3 ratio and top layer shall consists of mixture of cement and marble chips of size # 0 to # 2 as specified in the ratio of 1: 1 (1 cement: 1 marble chips). 5. REPAIR OF PLASTER The work includes cutting the patch and preparing the wall surface. The mortar of the patch, which has cracked, crumbled or sounds hollow shall be gently tapped and removed. The patch shall be tried to cut to a square or rectangular shape. The masonry joints, which become exposed after removal, of old plaster shall be raked out to a minimum depth of ½”. The surface shall then be thoroughly washed with water and kept wet till plastering is commenced. 6. MATERIAL Page 6 of 6
