Korean altar boy
This unique figure of a Buddhist
altar attendant was carved in Korea
during the late Yi Dynasty (18th-
19th) century. Thirty inches high
and made of polychrome wood,
it is now in the Honolulu Academy
of Arts, Hawaii. No other similar
figure, either in Korea or elsewhere,
exists today comparable with it
either in size or quality. Such
statues were placed in pairs on
either side and in front of the
Buddha in provincial temples of
Korea. This one originally held a
bird in its hands.
