Our Bayanihan Journey
IBM has been working globally with government and industry customers for
more than 100 years. In the Philippines, our relationships started over 70 years ago.
We provide strategic advice to the Philippine regulators on policies for global
competitiveness in the 21st century especially in the areas of skilled workforce,
moving up the value chain in global offshoring & outsourcing, open technologies,
data privacy and protection, trade and research and development.
With 13 world class facilities established across the country – eight in Quezon City,
two each in Cebu and Mandaluyong; and one in Makati – IBM has created significant
employment for the local community, new export revenue for the nation, and
fostered globally focused and competitive local IT skills.
“Bayanihan” means the community working together towards a common goal.

Building a Smarter Philippines
FILIPINNOVATION:
IBM was instrumental in the country’s
National Innovation Strategy, known as
“FILIPINNOVATION”. In 2007, IBM
partnered the Department of Science and
Technology to drive innovation, and programs
such as the Philippine Intellectual Property
Policy Strategy, Engineering Research &
Development for Technology Program, and
the National Technology Business Incubators
Program, were subsequently introduced.
SmarterCities:
Since 2008, interest in IBM’s Smarter Planet
strategy to transform banking, healthcare,
telecommunications, transportation, retail,
distribution and public safety in the Philippines
has grown rapidly. At the SmarterCities
Summit in 2010, IBM partnered with the
Filipinnnovation Network to convene to discuss
the most pressing issues facing the nation.
Philippine Digital Strategy:
IBM played a significant role in providing
thought leadership in the design of the
Philippine Digital Strategy, the country’s ICT
roadmap through 2016.
IBM Innovation Center:
In 2009, IBM’s Innovation Center in Quezon
City (opened by the President) was set up to help
the local business and academic communities
to build skills and develop new technologies
that support demand for digital infrastructure
projects in banking, energy, telecommunications,
transportation, retail and government industries.
Commitment to the local
Community:
As one of IBM’s key growth markets, the Philippines
benefits from the company’s commitment of
one-third of its Corporate Citizenship & Corporate
Affairs (CC&CA) investments allocated to all its
growth mar-kets (over 147 countries).
Education:
• KidSmart Early Learning Program applies
the latest technology in pre-kindergarten
curricula and has benefitted some 800,000
underprivileged children across the nation.
• Computer Eyes is a computer education
initiative that allows the visually impaired to
“see” with the help of a unique text-to-speech
technology.
• Earn as You Learn is an internship program
which gives students valuable work experience
with IBM while completing a special IT
course designed by IBM in partnership with
leading Universities.
• Services Technology Management
Program, co-developed with the Commission
on ICT and the Business Processing Association
of the Philippines to develop a critical mass
of skilled manpower to sustain leadership in
outsourcing services, based on IBM’s Service
Science, Management and Engineering
curriculum.
Uplifting communities through
the transfer of skills and expertise:
• IBM Corporate Service Corps (CSC)
first visited the Philippines in 2008 with the
twin goal of nurturing IBMers and helping
solve complex problems. CSC volunteers
collaborated with organizations on disaster
recovery, rehabilitation and preparedness.
Representing an investment of US$3 million,
over 100 IBMers have worked directly on
high impact projects throughout the
Philippines. In 2011, a CSC team and an
Executive Service Corps (ESC) team will
engage Cebu’s city officials to work on critical
economic development roadmaps.
• On Demand Community (ODC) rewards
volunteerism at non-profit community
organizations and schools leveraging IBM
technology with cash or technology grants.
• World Community Grid has been enabling
scientists around the world access to
extraordinary computational power that can
dramatically speed up research from years
to months.
• Disaster response donates money, time,
and technology to aid disaster management
and recovery efforts. We provide critical
capabilities that are systematic and repeatable,
enabling faster re-sponses in the future.
