Game Five—Oct. 4th — 1:05 p.m.----Eiler-Martin Stuadium—East Stroudsburg (PA)
The Head Coaches
Danny Hale is in his 11th season leading the Huskies’ football program in 2003. Hale had
a previous five-year coaching tenure at West Chester. Hale has a record of 83-32-1 (.720) at
Bloomsburg, and is sixth among active coaches on the all-time NCAA Division II winning
percentage list with a career record of 123-45-1 (.731). Hale was named the 2001 PSAC East
Coach of the Year for the eighth time in his career along with picking up the American
Football Coaches’ Association (AFCA) Division II District I Coach of the Year for the seventh
time. Following the 2000 season when Hale led the Huskies to the NCAA Division II title
game, he was named the AFCA Division II National Coach of the Year. That year Hale led
Bloomsburg to a 12-3 record. Hale was also named the AFCA District 1 Coach of the Year and
the PSAC Eastern Division Coach of the Year for 2000.
He also earned Coach of the Year honors from the PSAC East from 1994 to 1997, while in
1994 and 1995, he was honored by the AFCA District 1 as Coach of the Year. In 1999, Hale
broke A.K. Aldinger’s 94-year old record for most career wins by a Bloomsburg football head
coach. Hale picked up his 100th career head coaching win against Kutztown towards the end
of the 2000 season.
In 1997, Hale also coached Irv Sigler, the winner of the 1997 Harlon Hill Award as the
nation’s best Division II football player. As a result, he was named the 1997 PSAC East Coach
of the Year for the fourth consecutive season.
Coach Denny Douds is currently in his 30th year in charge of the Warriors program.
Douds has posted a career record of 173-123-3 (.584) and is currently fifth in victories
among Division II coaches.
Under Douds, the Warriors have won eight PSAC Eastern Division titles, tying for the
PSAC East crown last season with Bloomsburg. Douds was named the Kodak College Coach
of the Year three times (1975, 1976, 1982), the PSAC Coach of the year twice (1975,
1978), and the PSAC Eastern Division Coach of the Year three times (1976, 1982, 2002).
The Warriors made their only NCAA playoff appearance under Douds in 1991. This will be
Coach Douds 300th game as head coach at East Stroudsburg.
East Stroudsburg Last Week
The East Stroudsburg Warriors dropped their first game of the season last week against
PSAC West opponent Edinboro. The Warrior defense surrendered 438 total yards to the
Edinboro offense in a 31-20 decision.
The Warriors opened up the scoring in the first quarter on a 28-yard field goal by Mark
Brubaker. The Fighting Scots responded by driving 34 yards on nine plays. The drive was
capped off with a 35-yard field goal off of the foot of Edinboro kicker Eli Visnick.
The Warriors started the second quarter by driving 67 yards on 12 plays. The drive was
topped off by another Brubaker field goal, making the score 6-3, Warriors. After Justin
Lipscomb returned the ensuing kick-off to the Edinboro 29-yard line, the Fighting Scots
drove 71 yards in 2:09. The drive was highlighted by two Justin Bouch completions to
Jordan Bobitski for a total of 52 yards. Sean Hess capped the drive by catching a pass from
Bouch for a touchdwn. Visnick added the extra point and Edinboro led 10-6.
The Warriors regained the lead late in the second when quarterback Jim Terwilliger hit
Tim Strenfel for an eight yard scoring strike. The extra point was good and the Warriors
took a 13-10 lead with them into the locker room at half.
Edinboro responded and scored two touchdowns in the third period. After a 1 yard Matt
Phillips run gave the Fighting Scots a 17-13 lead, Justin Lipscomb lengthened the advantage
by catching a 19 yard touchdown pass from Bouch. Visnick added the extra point and
Edinboro carried a 24-13 lead with them into the fourth.
East Stroudsburg wasted no time, scoring eight seconds into the fourth quarter.
Terwillinger found Evan Prall for an 18 yard touchdown and the Warriors closed the gap to
24-20. The Warriors had one final opportunity to win the game. After the Fighting Scots
failed to convert on fourth down from the East Stroudsburg 23 yard line, the Warriors went
to work. However, Jim Terwillinger’s fourth down pass was broken up and Edinboro took
over. Edinboro running back Brandon Munson scampered 24 yards to seal the deal for the
Fighting Scots.
Bloomsburg Last Week
The Huskies got back on track last week by defeating PSAC West opponent Slippery Rock,
19-16. Mike Ceroli’s one yard touchdown run with 3:26 left gave the Huskies the lead for
good and sealed the victory for the Huskies.
Slippery Rock took the lead with an 80 yard-17 play drive and capped the drive off with a
four yard touchdown run from John Kniess. The Huskes looked to respond, and did in a big
way.
Bloomsburg drove 94 yards on 12 plays. The drive ended on a tremendous catch from
Donny Patrick. Patrick tipped the ball to himself and caught it while he was on his back.
Patrick’s touchdown catch from Jack Lydic knotted the score up at 7-7. Bloomsburg managed
to score another touchdown late in the second quarter when Lydic threw a picture perfect ball
in stride with a streaking Steve Burke. The 30 yard touchdown pass gave the Huskies the
lead, 13-7 at the half.
Slippery Rock managed the only score of the third period when quarterback Luke
McCaffrey hit Valdez Hails for a five yard touchdown. The point after attempt failed and the
game was tied at 13-13 going into the third period.
After the Huskies went three and out deep in their own territory on their first drive of the
fourth quarter, The Rock managed to move the ball to the Bloomsburg 20 yardline. The Rock
attempted a 37 yard field goal that sailed through the uprights. Slippery Rock led 16-13.
The Bloomsburg offense moved the ball to The Rock 24 yardline but the drive stalled
when Lydic was stopped short on a fourth down try. The Rock took over but was penalized
back to their own 12 yardline on a holding call. Two plays later, Slippery Rock Quarterback
Luke McCaffrey had trouble handling a snap from shotgun at The Rock eight yardline.
Bloomsburg defensive tackle Ben Cohick jumped on the fumble setting up the winning drive.
Lydic finished 9-19 with one interception for 106 yards and two touchdowns. Patrick led
Bloomsburg receivers with three catches for 51 yards and one score. Ceroli finished with 46
yards rushing on 19 carries to lead the ground game.Defensively, the Huskies got 10 tackles
each from Eric Steffen and Paul Linn, while Chris Kelly added eight tackles.
Last Meeting
Mark Brubaker’s field goal with 50 seconds left gave East Stroudsburg a 16-13 victory. The
win snapped the Huskies 16-game home winning streak dating back to 1999.
Andrew Herrmann threw for 179 yards to lead the Huskies. Matt Keys added 12 tackles
on defense for the Huskies.
Hale on the Huskies
“It felt great to get a win over a solid ball club like Slippery Rock,” said Hale. “All three
aspects of our team (offense, defense, special teams) contribued big plays. Hopefully we can
continue with this momentum and pick up a win against East Stroudsburg. We want to get off
on the right foot since it is the first week of division play.”
Hale on the Warriors
“This team is hungry and will pose a great challenge for our ball club,” Hale said. “They
have a stingy defense and our offense will try to move the ball with a combination of pass and
run plays. They are experienced on both sides of the ball and they have an impressive young
quarterback. He will be the key to their success.”
The Series
East Stroudsburg lead the all-time series, 41-30-2. Under Coach Hale, Bloomsburg has won
eight of the last 10 meetings.
Brilliant ‘Backers
The Bloomsburg linebacker trio of Paul Linn, Eric Steffen, and Shawn Butler all rank in
the NCAA top 35 for solo tackles per game. Linn ranks 19th overall with six solo tackles a
game while Eric Steffen ranks 28th with 5.8 per game. Shawn Butler is currently ranked 34th
in the nation with 5.5 solo tackles per game. Linn leads the PSAC with 24 solo tackles.
The Last Time...
The last time the Huskies lost to East Stroudsburg away from Redman Stadium was 1992
when the game was played in Moosic, PA. The Huskies fell to the Warriors 42-17 at The
Steamtown Classic played at Lackawanna County Stadium.
1100 and Counting
Tailback Mike Ceroli has rushed for 1,100 yards in his three-year career. He is 436 yards shy
of moving into 9th place on the school’s all-time rushing list.
Sharing in 2002
The Huskies and the Warriors shared last year’s PSAC East Title. The shared title was the
third for Danny Hale as head coach of the Huskies.
In the Zone
Bloomsburg was a perfect 2-2 in the red zone against Slippery Rock. For the season, the
Huskies are 8-12 (66.7 %) in the red zone. The team has four touchdowns and four field
goals.
Last PSAC Road Loss
The Huskies last PSAC East road loss came in the 1998 season to West Chester by a score of
21-10. The Huskies have since won 13 straight PSAC East games away from Redman Stadium.
