Omran awards contract for Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre

MUSCAT — Omran has awarded the
infrastructure works for various developments
at the Oman Convention
and Exhibition Center (OCEC) to
Khalid Bin Ahmed and Sons (KAS) —
Al Habib Joint Venture.
The agreement was signed at a
special ceremony at the project site
between Nasser bin Khamis al Jashmi,
Omran Chairman, and Ali Malalah Habib
al Lawati, Al Habib Chairman. Also
in attendance were Wael al Lawati,
Omran CEO, N Surendrakumar, KAS
Managing Director, Said al Qasmi,
Chief Project Oficer at OCEC and Vijayakumar
B, Al Habib General Manager.
“OCEC has been making steady
progress for its debut in 2016 and
Omran has been working systematically
to ensure tendering is carried
out according to plan, on budget and
with particular attention to detail. We
have also ensured that Omani companies
are given preference in line with
Omran’s Local Development Policy,”
commented Al Jashmi.
“In addition to local contractors
such as KAS, we also require our contractors
to procure all locally available
materials and equipment from within
Oman and process goods and services
from Omani suppliers when possible.
This will further support the local
supply chain and ensure maximum
beneit to the economy.”
Ali Malalah said, “As a joint venture
of local Omani companies, KAS-Al Habib
JV is proud to be associated with
this national and prestigious project
to deliver the road and utilities infrastructure
for the Oman Convention
and Exhibition Centre project.”
The infrastructure works package
includes building 4.4 km of single
carriageway roads, 1.3 km of dual
carriageway roads, 6 roundabouts,
100 m wadi bridge and utilities that
include 3.7 km portable and 4.1 km
waste water networks, 5 km irrigation
and electrical networks as well as
telecommunication ducts.
Al Qasmi said, “The time frame
for completing this package is 12
months and we are working towards
awarding the irst major
building contract for the exhibition
halls, car parks and the energy center
within the next month.”
The 2 million square metre development
is expected to draw more
than 600,000 visitors a year by 2018
and will consist of a world class convention
& exhibition centre, four hotels,
business park, retail space, as
well as residential buildings. It will
act as a platform for cultural exchange
and dialogue and position Oman as
a premier regional business tourism
destination.
