Omran awards contract for <strong>Oman</strong> Convention and Exhibition Centre<br />

MUSCAT — Omran has awarded the<br />
infrastructure works for various developments<br />
at the <strong>Oman</strong> Convention<br />
and Exhibition Center (OCEC) to<br />
Khalid Bin Ahmed and Sons (KAS) —<br />
Al Habib Joint Venture.<br />
The agreement was signed at a<br />
special ceremony at the project site<br />
between Nasser bin Khamis al Jashmi,<br />
Omran Chairman, and Ali Malalah Habib<br />
al Lawati, Al Habib Chairman. Also<br />
in attendance were Wael al Lawati,<br />
Omran CEO, N Surendrakumar, KAS<br />
Managing Director, Said al Qasmi,<br />
Chief Project Oficer at OCEC and Vijayakumar<br />
B, Al Habib General Manager.<br />
“OCEC has been making steady<br />
progress for its debut in 2016 and<br />
Omran has been working systematically<br />
to ensure tendering is carried<br />
out according to plan, on budget and<br />
with particular attention to detail. We<br />
have also ensured that <strong>Oman</strong>i companies<br />
are given preference in line with<br />
Omran’s Local Development Policy,”<br />
commented Al Jashmi.<br />
“In addition to local contractors<br />
such as KAS, we also require our contractors<br />
to procure all locally available<br />
materials and equipment from within<br />
<strong>Oman</strong> and process goods and services<br />
from <strong>Oman</strong>i suppliers when possible.<br />
This will further support the local<br />
supply chain and ensure maximum<br />
beneit to the economy.”<br />
Ali Malalah said, “As a joint venture<br />
<strong>of</strong> local <strong>Oman</strong>i companies, KAS-Al Habib<br />
JV is proud to be associated with<br />
this national and prestigious project<br />
to deliver the road and utilities infrastructure<br />
for the <strong>Oman</strong> Convention<br />
and Exhibition Centre project.”<br />
The infrastructure works package<br />
includes building 4.4 km <strong>of</strong> single<br />
carriageway roads, 1.3 km <strong>of</strong> dual<br />
carriageway roads, 6 roundabouts,<br />
100 m wadi bridge and utilities that<br />
include 3.7 km portable and 4.1 km<br />
waste water networks, 5 km irrigation<br />
and electrical networks as well as<br />
telecommunication ducts.<br />
Al Qasmi said, “The time frame<br />
for completing this package is 12<br />
months and we are working towards<br />
awarding the irst major<br />
building contract for the exhibition<br />
halls, car parks and the energy center<br />
within the next month.”<br />
The 2 million square metre development<br />
is expected to draw more<br />
than 600,000 visitors a year by 2018<br />
and will consist <strong>of</strong> a world class convention<br />
& exhibition centre, four hotels,<br />
business park, retail space, as<br />
well as residential buildings. It will<br />
act as a platform for cultural exchange<br />
and dialogue and position <strong>Oman</strong> as<br />
a premier regional business tourism<br />
destination.<br />
