Here’s to your health!
The beneficial effects of nature on young people’s personal development
are undisputable. The 23 national parks in the Parks Québec network are
public areas, ideal for discovering nature and participating in outdoor
activities. This year, Québec National Parks Day highlights how important
enjoying nature is to our overall well-being by crafting its message around
the health theme. Of course, we hope to see other iterations of this day
year-round.
School program offering takes on even greater importance
Statistics indicating that young people have become increasingly sedentary
and out of touch with nature have prompted concerns among the staff of
our national parks. These concerns have, over the past few years, spurred
our parks teams to develop an activity offering specifically intended for this
group. Our parks’ offering has evolved from virtually no discovery programs
in 1999 to an impressive and varied line-up of 480 activities today. In
2011-2012, 377,417 or so visitors to the Parcs Québec network participated
in one of the many diverse activities offered: theatrical vignettes, treasure
hunts, hiking (on foot, by bike, on the water, etc.), series of talks… all told, a
range of activities that brings together visitors of all ages who are curious to
learn a little more about their natural and historic heritage.
Increasingly more appropriate activities for schools
Helping young people get in touch with nature also ties in with a major
succession issue in our national parks. Parcs Québec works very closely
with schools to ensure that they benefit from the great outdoors, often near
urban centres. As they learn to better appreciate these exceptional natural
environments, young people also become more aware of the challenges
involved in maintaining the necessary balance between conservation and
accessibility – the two components of our national parks’ mission.
Our most effective advocates
Young people are our best spokespersons. Following a visit to Parc national
du Bic, here’s how one sixth-grader put into words the astonishment she
felt during her encounter with nature: "I hope I can go back to admire all
these wonders again, but on the next visit, I would take my time and bring
my family… to this Park of Wonders!"
In light of our objective – to encourage youth to get in touch with nature –
we will continue to develop activities and programs designed to reach out
to them. We welcome you to our national parks, on behalf of all those who
work there and look forward to greeting you upon your arrival!
Message from the Minister
The government attaches prime importance to the development of Québec’s natural and historic heritage,
as demonstrated by the extensive work done in our national parks over the past few years. This includes
the major project underway at Parc national du Lac-Témiscouata. Its completion will take the government
closer to the target it has set for itself – raising protected-area coverage in Québec to 12% of the territory
by 2015 – and Quebecers will enjoy access to infrastructure and services that meet international standards.
Enhancement work in the Franceville sector of Parc national du Mont-Mégantic, coupled with the
renovation or construction work on Discovery and Visitors Centres at three other national parks – Frontenac,
Jacques-Cartier and Mont-Saint-Bruno – will also mark the completion of a whole series of essential
projects intended to improve accessibility to these protected areas. Additional work will shortly begin in
other national parks, including Mont-Tremblant, Yamaska and Grands-Jardins.
Parcs Québec’s mandate extends beyond enhancement of our national parks, to encompass biodiversity
protection and preservation. Our on-site teams possess expertise that enables them to develop strategies
for research and acquisition of knowledge that are recognized in scientific communities. Another innovation
was introduced five years ago when the national parks implemented their Ecological Integrity Monitoring
Program – a Canadian first.
Through its partnership role, Sépaq ensures that our national parks contribute to regional economic
development. The parks work with their partners, taking local realities into consideration while ensuring
that development is centered on particular features and attractions specific to their territory. Each park is
unique – it’s now up to you to come out and discover them.

This year, the Parc National de Frontenac marks its 25 th anniversary with the opening of its new
Discovery and Visitors Centre (DVC)/ South Registration Centre, located near Baie des Ours, and close
to the Southern Sector entrance (See picture on the cover page).
More than a reception and service centre, with its Boutique Nature and mini-convenience store, the
DVC is primarily an area of discovery, where you can familiarize yourself with the park’s must-see
attractions. Whatever your interests, the DVC is the starting point for your exploration of the territory.

The Mission
of Parcs Québec
With a view to achieving harmonious development
at the cultural, social, economic and
regional levels, Parcs Québec is responsible
for the conservation and development of
territories that are representative of Québec’s
43 natural regions and exceptional sites, due
notably to their biological diversity, while ensuring
that they are accessible for educational
and outdoor use.
All of Québec’s national parks were created
in accordance with World Conservation Union
standards. A national park is a relatively vast
area:
•that represents one or more ecosystems
that are moderately or not at all transformed
by exploitation;
•where animal and plant species, geomorphological
sites and habitats are of particular
interest from a scientific, educational or
recreational viewpoint, and that offers
scenery of great beauty;
•in which the highest competent authority of
the country has taken measures to eliminate
exploitation and to instill respect for the
ecological, geomorphological or aesthetic
aspects on the whole;
•where a visit is authorized, under certain
conditions, for educational, cultural or recreational
purposes.
Parc National de Frontenac was created in 1987 to protect a 155 km 2 area representative of the natural
landscape of the Estrie, Beauce, and Bellechasse ranges.
Set well away from main transportation routes, the Grand Lac Saint-François area was untouched by
development for many years. Forestry, agriculture, industrialization, and real-estate development have since
altered the local landscape, making Parc National de Frontenac one of last natural oases of protected land
in the region.
The Park is a true wilderness haven where nature remains untouched, except for the work required for
conservation and the development of educational and recreational activities. White-tailed dear roam the
Park’s hills and hardwood forests, while its mosaic of lakes, ponds, marshes, and brooks are home to large
numbers of ducks, otters, and other creatures who amble about under the gaze of the great blue heron,
which is found throughout the territory. There is a wide range of birdlife, with close to 200 identified species.
Carnivorous plants, orchids, and a rare species called green arrow arum (Peltandra virginica) also testify to
Parc national de Frontenac’s wealth of biodiversity.

or boating excursions. The Park Path Explorer will guide you through an abundance of discoveries
offered by the Parc National de Frontenac’s natural diversity and wealth.

Lac à la Barbue,
a site worth protecting and discovering!
Water activities and picnic area
Lac à la Barbue is one of the Park’s most significant natural features. Its fragile
ecosystem boasts an abundance of species, some of them quite rare. The lake
is home to numerous marshes that offer prime habitat for a range of wildlife
and diverse plant communities, primarily water lilies and pickerelweed, which
transform the site into a stunning aquatic floral display, come July.
To protect the unique lake, a protection plan was implemented this year to
introduce awareness, regulatory, and site management initiatives.
Come to explore this enchanting site as you follow the path of floating interpretive
panels. Please remember and be a responsible visitor to help conserve
this ecosystem.
Responsible boating
Water activities
You can canoe or kayak on lac des Iles, lac à la Barbue and Grand lac Saint-François. Small water crafts
are available for rental at the Saint-Daniel sector (service centres), Discovery and Visitors Centre / South
Registration Centre and at the Escale (Baie Sauvage). Period: mid-May to mid-October.
Water zones
Docking motor crafts is permitted on the shores of the Sainte-Praxède sector, and sites as identified on the
map on pages 12-13. Overnight mooring on the water is permitted only on Sainte-Praxède sector. A stay
permit is mandatory. See the nautical regulation on www.parcsquebec.com/frontenac, tab « Information ».

Discover the Park’s loveliest equipped picnic areas. Spend quality time with family or friends in the heart
of nature, in a sunny and verdant decor. An invitation you won’t want to miss!

Fragile zones
The lake is home to a number of marshes. Heavy canoe and kayak traffic in these
fragile zones can disturb and damage the site’s flora and fauna. Why not bring
along your binoculars and observe the wildlife from a distance?
Protected area – No entry
This zone was set up to protect wildlife species that are easily disturbed,
providing an area where they can rest, sheltered against intrusion. The zone
is identified by white buoys. Please stay out!
Nesting period
With the exception of lakeside residents, boating on the lake is forbidden until
mid-June to protect the nesting sites of certain species, including the bald
eagle. When these birds are disturbed they will sometimes abandon their
young.

Some invasive species such as the Eurasian watermilfoil and the zebra mussel
can spread from one lake to another on the bottom of watercraft or in mud. To
help reduce the risk of introducing these invasive species to Lac à la Barbue, if
you are using your own boat, please make sure it is clean and free of mud and
plants.
Fishing is allowed only by cabin guests with the required authorization
to fish.
The use of any kind of motor or mechanically powered device
is prohibited on the lake in order to limit the spread of underwater
plantlife. These plants can spread easily, regrowing from stem
fragments. The use of motors can cause premature aging of the
lake.
To protect the lakeshore, boats may dock only at sites set aside for
this purpose.

Embark on an adventure as you explore many marshes
scattered around the bay. You’ll discover beds of aquatic
plants in full bloom and an extraordinary diversity of
birdlife. You may even spot a great blue heron fishing
for lunch, a family of Canada geese bobbing among the
bulrushes, or better yet... a bald eagle gliding silently
overhead!

Lac à la Barbue, South Sector
Climb into a canoe and paddle your way around this
delightful aquatic flower garden featuring various
water lily varieties. Ten floating interpretive panels
along the route explain the features of this fascinating
environment. The lake and its many marshes are
home to a wide variety of plant and animal life,
including great blue herons, beavers, and otters.

of the senses from the rich smells of the softwood forest.
Linking Lac à la Barbue to the Grand Lac Saint-François, this trail offers a short
trek in the heart of a moss forest.
This short trail links Lac des Iles to the river’s marsh, leading to Lac à la Barbue.
Because of the beautiful waterfalls and the immense marsh, you will have an
opportunity to observe interesting wildlife and flora, and have access to a privileged
lookout onto Lac des Iles.
This short trail offers beautiful undergrowth and many lookouts to Baie Sauvage.
You will probably not be alone in your trek, as the white-tailed deer and American
red squirrel may be tagging along.
This short trail will give you the chance to observe a diversity of tiny organisms. It
is the ideal trek for young and budding naturalists!
NEW! This trail first enters a moss fir forest, and then into a hardwood forest. It
goes up to Lac des Iles and Lac Thor. This is a more difficult course, reaching the
peak of one of the Massif’s hills, and offering a breathtaking view of the Southern
Sector.

Attention canoe-campers!
Please note that it is forbidden to collect firewood in the forest. Visitors
who violate this rule may be fined.
The dead wood that litters the forest floor is important for animals and
plants. It creates excellent hiding spots for small animals, and when it
decomposes, it provides nutrients essential for plant and tree growth.
Gathering dead wood in the forest requires heading off the trails into the
undergrowth, which is very fragile. By straying off the trails, you trample
the undergrowth, destroying the plants growing there. The soil can
become so compacted that plants can no longer survive there.

Sport fishing
Fishing on lac des Îles, lac à la Barbue and lac des Ours is allowed only for
visitors holding an authorization to fish while staying in a chalet. Specific
conservation regulations apply. Permission to fish and a Quebec fishing
permit are mandatory, and can be obtained at the Registration Centre of the
Southern sector. On Grand Lac Saint-François fishing activities follow the
regulations applicable to zone 4.
Don’t forget to register your catch! Information on your catch is essential
for maintaining sound fish stock management. Cabins Client: at the end of
your stay, you must complete and return to South gate the authorization form
from fishing. For people fishing on the Grand Lac St-François, it is suggested
to fill the logbook located at the Visitors Centre of St-Daniel, Escale and or
Discovery and Visitors Centre / South Registration Centre.

How much diversity
in the Parc’s dragonfly
community?
To answer this question, an inventory of the dragonflies
and damselflies (Odonata group) was
done in 2011. The intent was to obtain a complete
diversity portrait for this group of insects. In all,
28 different species were recorded. However,
since the inventory was done at the start of the
summer, we can assume that the richness of this
group is much greater.
The specimens were collected near the different
lakes, marshes, streams, and peatland. Those are
the environments where we can find these
insects, since before having the ability to fly, their
first two life stages are associated to these
specific habitats. At the time of reproduction, the
dragonflies lay their eggs either in plant tissue or
directly into the water. Once hatched, the larvae
live either underwater or in the soil. Following this
stage, the adult form we typically recognize
appears.

Among the species worth mentioning, there is the
harlequin darner (Gomphaeschna furcillata), a
species quite rare in southern Québec, which was
collected in the Saint-Daniel peatland. Other
species, such as the ebony jewelwing (Calopteryx
maculata) and the Beaverpond clubtail (Gomphus
borealis), have also been confirmed.
Electric, Ecological…
Practical
In the wake of many parks member of the
Sépaq network, in 2011 Parc National de
Frontenac purchased a GEM electric vehicle.
This vehicle, which seems worthy of
any good sci-fi thriller, hides a dazzling 7 hp
electric motor, able to push this little racer
to the incredible speed of 42 km/h.
Intended for maintenance of the Baie
Sauvage campground, it meets the job requirements
for both capacity and autonomy.
The maintenance crew appreciates this
silent and versatile work companion, and
with its unique design, it gets attention
from many visitors, who just have to stop
and see it perform. Using this vehicle allows
us to reduce the ecological footprint generated
by our activities.

In an effort to reduce waste, the wood
provided by a local supplier is sold in bulk
only. Campers can carry their wood in the
reusable bags available at the service
points, and return them afterwards.

The Canada goose is one of the region’s native
species. The birds usually stop in the area
during their spring and fall migrations, spending
the summer further north in order to expand the
family. The difference today, is that we have a
variety of Canada goose, which actually
“resides” in the area all summer long. Over the
past ten years or so, the Parc’s Canada goose
population has continued to grow, causing
some inconvenience, the most notable being
the large quantity of droppings on the ground.
The geese are especially numerous in grassy
areas, where they can have easy access to land
and water, allowing them to feed in a safe
environment and flee rapidly when necessary.
A new plantation started in 2010 in the Capitainerie
Sector has significantly reduced the
problem.
The redevelopment of the Baie aux Rats-
Musqués picnic area, combined with an improved
fencing system, should also help reduce
their presence and the associated problems.
Did you know…
The adult goose can eat up to 1.8 kg (4 lb) of
grass per day, and produce up to 0.9 kg (2 lb) of
feces on a daily basis.
When the geese find a suitable area to build
their nest, they usually come back to it every
year, as do their young ones.

Colored mushrooms!
Did you know the mushrooms come in different
shapes, colors and textures? Some are edible,
others are toxic, but as long as you only enjoy
them with your eyes, there is no danger!
Resist the temptation!
The Park’s campgrounds and serviced areas attract various animals. Sometimes
these animals can be delightful for visitors of all ages, but in other
cases, they can become a nuisance and a danger for the safety of all Park
users. That is why it is very important to follow a few basic rules:
→ Never feed wild animals.
→ Do not leave any food or dirty dishes out.
→ Pack food away in a place the animals cannot reach.
→ Discard garbage in containers designed for this purpose.
Failing to follow these simple rules can cause all kinds of problems. Raccoon,
skunk, and squirrel populations are growing, and these animals will seek out
human food. Ducks can also visit campgrounds, leaving their calling cards
behind! Bears can become used to the presence of humans. Failing to respect
these rules can also harm the health of the animals themselves, reduce their
natural instinct, and even create health risks for the park’s visitors.

Many of the Parc’s trails are filled with mushrooms,
some are amazing, others very colorful, and
sometimes a few can be somewhat disgusting.
We can observe these mushrooms during the summer,
usually after a rainy day, as well as in the fall,
but there are some which grow year round. Here
are a few of the species you can see.
The outfitters, members of Aventure Écotourisme Québec,
in collaboration with the Sépaq, offer you several stays and
guided activities specially conceived to have you discover
exceptional natural spaces.

Treat yourself to a snowshoeing excursion in a winter
wonderland and then relax by a cozy fire. The
Cyr 1 and Cyr 2 chalets, as well as the La Tanière
rustic shelter, are accessible by snowshoe 3 km
from the South sector main office. No running
water, and pit toilets only. For more information on

Baggage Transport
Why do without! Reserve the baggage transport
service available during the winter on Sundays,
Wednesdays, and Fridays. The outbound trip is at
3 p.m. and the return trip at 11 a.m. Let us carry
all your essentials while you travel light on the
3 kilometer snowshoe trip in and out! Additional
fees apply.

network of trails from easy to intermediate. The
L’Érablière trail at the entrance to the South sector
offers breathtaking viewpoints of Grand Lac Saint-

tu recevras un co lant attestan ta participation. Après deux participations,
tu recevras un laissez-passer pour une activité en rabaska. Si tu participes
aux quatre activités, tu recevras l’attestation de « garde-parc en herbe »
et pourras participer au concours « amène ta fami le au parc ».

Ask for your “apprentice warden” passport
when you get to the park! Each time you take
part in one of the four passport activities,
you receive an attendance sticker. After two
activities, you get a pass good for a rabaska
activity. Participate in all four activities and
get your “garde-parc en herbe” certificate,
and a chance to enter our “Take Your Family
to the Park” contest.

High school students create a national park!
First, a park warden visits the students to teach them about Québec’s national parks, including their mission
and history, and to present the rich natural heritage of Parc national de Frontenac.
Next, the students put their new knowledge to work and, with the help of maps, develop a new national
park called Montagne Verte. This activity is available year-round as part of Québec’s cycle one high school
geography program.
