discuss how the WCC International operation might work in the future.
2014 will be the 40 th anniversary of the WCC and this would be a good moment for WCC to
mount some additional activities to raise profile for the organisation. Rosy also had
conversations with China about a contemporary craft biennial which was to be launched this
year in April for exhibition in November. However this has now been postponed to coincide
with the 40 th anniversary. Plans for this will include the biennial, exhibitions and conference.
International Handicrafts Day
Following an enquiry from the Albanian Artisan Association (www.artizanati.com/en), WCC-
World Crafts Council was established on 12th June1964, it was suggested that an
International Handicrafts Day takes place on 12th June. This has been agreed and we are
in touch with the Albanian Artisan Association about what they are planning and will send
further details, if forthcoming.
long as the true masters in their craft are getting down to their work.
Norwegian Crafts 2013 conference on Craft & Social Change
London 8-9th May 2013
Can craft create social change? Where is the evidence? What more can it do?
Craft and Social Change is a Norwegian Crafts event organised by ArtProjects and
Solutions. Following on from the success of last year’s conference, Museum for Skills,
Norwegian Crafts will be hosting a second London conference prior to Collect in May 2013.
This year, craft’s contribution to the shaping of society will be examined. The conference
pays tribute to the 100th anniversary of women gaining the vote in Norway.
This year the conference will be held at Toynbee Hall, a venue historically associated with
social reform and the Arts and Crafts movement. Presentations will be given by prominent
thinkers and activists from inside and outside of the arts. There will be plenty of opportunity
to voice your own opinions at breakout sessions and to get involved in some making.
The conference will begin by looking at the impact craft has had on campaigning, feminism,
social policy and the lives of individuals. The focus will then shift to current practice and
include an exploration of craftivism, the slow revolution, sustainable living and what this
means for local and global economies.
Speakers will include: Artist - Eva Bakkeslett, Professor Helen Carnac, Katy Emck - Fine
Cell, Ian Hunter - Littoral, Professor Janis Jefferies, Economist - Irene Nygårdsvik
