I served as a faculty instructor for the Leadership Development Education for Sustained Peace <br />

(LDESP) program. LDESP briefs enlisted soldiers and reservists on the politics, culture, and <br />

history of the regions to which they are deploying. <br />

Research Specialist in Ethnobotany, Missouri Botanical Garden (2010-­‐2011) <br />

I conducted ecological and anthropological fieldwork to monitor biodiversity and climate <br />

change in alpine areas of Bhutan, Nepal, and China as part of the international GLORIA <br />

(www.gloria.ac.at) network. With local collaborators, I elicited indigenous perspectives on <br />

climate change in search of local adaptations with the potential for replication. <br />

Adjunct Assistant Professor, Brandeis University (2009-­‐2010) <br />

I taught graduate students in the Sustainable International Development Program at the Heller <br />

School for Social Policy and Management. <br />

Research Associate, Rangeland Enclosure on the Tibetan Plateau, Oxford University (2007-­‐2010) <br />

This collaborative project investigated the impacts of enclosure across the Tibetan Plateau in <br />

China. Funded by the European Commission, our multi-­‐national and multi-­‐disciplinary team <br />

examined the effects of fencing on livestock productivity, wildlife, vegetation, and the socio-­economic<br />

situation of pastoralists. <br />

Assistant Professor, University of Vermont (2007-­‐2009) <br />

I taught community development, social entrepreneurship, marketing, and research methods <br />

in the Department of Community Development and Applied Economics. <br />

Project Coordinator, Digital Himalaya Project, Cornell University (2004-­‐2005) <br />

I managed a team of anthropologists and computer programmers building an Internet portal <br />

for research on the Himalayas and Tibet including images, interactive maps, and census data, <br />

www.digitalhimalaya.com. <br />

International Development and Community Planning Positions <br />

President, DROKPA (1998-­‐present) <br />

DROKPA is a 501c3 non-­‐profit organization that partners with communities in the Himalayas <br />

and Central Asia to catalyze social entrepreneurship and implement grassroots development <br />

projects focusing on alternative energy, education, and community health. <br />

Consultant, Climate & Development Knowledge Network, UN University (2012-­‐present) <br />

I led a team of Nepali and international researchers that conducted a case study investigating <br />

loss and damages resulting from changes in climate in southeastern Nepal. We are now <br />

producing policy recommendations and academic publications based on this research. <br />

Consultant, ARD, Inc. (2009-­‐present) <br />

I am advising a USAID-­‐funded community forestry project in Liberia, including the drafting of <br />

training manuals and curricula for the national Forestry Training Institute. I was also a senior <br />

member of the ARD team that evaluated USAID-­‐funded projects in Tibetan areas of China. <br />

Consultant, Winrock International (2009-­‐2010) <br />

I wrote grants, trained staff, planned project implementation, and provided monitoring and <br />

evaluation services for Winrock’s USAID-­‐funded projects in Tibetan areas of China. <br />

Consultant, The Poverty Alleviation Fund (2007, 2008) <br />

I monitored TPAF’s rural development projects in the Tibet Autonomous Region (PRC) and <br />

evaluated their micro-­‐credit loans, resource management training, and capacity building <br />

programs. <br />

Ecologist, Planning Corporation (1999-­‐2002) <br />

I consulted on mitigation and restoration of development-­‐related activities in southern <br />

California including wetland permitting, environmental impact assessments, endangered <br />

species monitoring. <br />

Consultant, World Wildlife Fund Nepal Program (1994-­‐1996) <br />

I planned and implemented a community forestry project in the buffer zone of Mt. Everest <br />

National Park, as well as wrote grants, drafted management plans for Nepal’s conservation <br />

agencies, edited a conservation monograph series, and mapped project sites. <br />
