FROM THE
PRINCIPAL
This has been a very full week of learning for our students after our short week last
week. They have settled back into School beautifully and seem engaged and focused.
30 th Birthday celebrations
On Tuesday during the normal High School Assembly time we had a full school
celebration of our reaching the age of 30. We remembered our humble beginnings,
with just 53 students back in 1983, and our journey over the years since then towards
the successful school we now are. Here is an excerpt from my speech:
Mrs Anne Hastings
!
Every step of the way the School has been supported by the community, sometimes in
a financial way, and sometimes through people generously giving their time to work
for the school. Our School’s success is a product of the input of so many people, who
have believed in it and stood by it in times when things were tough. These people
have built the foundation of the culture of the school, which is one of giving to others
and doing one’s best. Just the number of buildings and spaces that are named after
benefactors and supporters indicates the community support for our school …This
practice helps us recognise and remember the contributions of these people to our
school.
Thirty years is not a long time in a school’s history, especially in the eastern suburbs,
where many schools are more than 100 years old. It takes time to develop a culture,
to work out one’s place in the world of education and to determine what we stand for.
There have been 9 Presidents of the Board and 7 Principals over the 30 years. There
are around 900 graduates of Emanuel, who are members of the Emanuel School
Alumni. They are known everywhere for their dependability, employability and sense
of fun and fair play. The children of ex-students are starting to themselves come
through the school, with our first such students entering Year 7 this year. Quite a
number of our Primary school students are sons and daughters of Emanuel Alumni. It
is a measure of their belief in the school that they send their children here.
What we miss in longevity, we make up for in spirit. Now over 760 students P – 12,
with stable enrolments and a strong reputation for providing an engaging, nurturing,
inspiring learning environment, Emanuel School is a force to be reckoned with. It has
come of age – everyone knows that if you are lucky enough to come to Emanuel
School you will be cared for, you will have a wonderful, broad education and will be
well-prepared for a full and purposeful life beyond the school when you graduate. ‘We
are Emanuel’ paints the picture – we educate the mind, spirit and being of each
person and each of us, students and staff, combine to make up the whole picture of
our school. Each of us should be proud of what our School has become, and of the
considerable community input that has supported its development. Let us go on to
celebrate this milestone as we look forward to the next 30, 60, 100 year milestones
and what we, as Emanuel, will achieve. Mazel tov, Emanuel School! May we continue
to excel and may each of our students continue to demonstrate the virtues of a
mensch long into the future.
Student success
Debating and Public Speaking
Elisheva Madar and Daniel Hellig-Smith succeeded late last year in winning the
prestigious Evatt Trophy in Brisbane. This is a national competition, and the
achievement is a very significant one. Elisheva went to The Hague for the United
Nations Youth Affairs Symposium and tour over the summer break and Daniel has been
selected (the youngest student ever to have this honour) to be part of the UN Youth
delegation to East Timor in July this year.
Sport
We have heard that five of our students have been selected to go to the Maccabiah
games in Israel in July: Joshua Israeli and Daniel Pilman for tennis, Mark Filler for
Soccer, Joshua Zwi for swimming and Hannah Vasin for netball. Congratulations!
Community
• Jemima Firestone-Greville used some of her holidays to hold a cupcake fundraiser
for school children in Kenya, raising $2500.
• Jake Silove travelled to Vietnam over the break. He visited a number of orphanages
and very poor families to donate the funds (over $8000) that were raised by Year 10,
the SRC and the High School last year.
• Congratulations to Isabella Satz for her initiative and organisation of the successful
Asylum Seekers Awareness evening last night.
Best wishes for a restful and reinvigorating weekend.
Shabbat Shalom
FROM THE
DEPUTY
PRINCIPAL
Student Management 7-12
During 2012, teachers discussed the Student Management system for the High School
with a view to ensuring we have a system that is best practice as well as being
effective. Students were offered the opportunity to give their opinions via a survey.
As a result of this process, a new system of student management was created for Years
7-12. There are two posters in each classroom that explain the “Rights and
Responsibilities” of each student and the restorative justice approach of Teshuvah in
place at Emanuel. These posters are below.
Ms Margaret Lowe
!
4
Student Management Continued
Students’ misbehaviours can be divided into three categories – minor, ongoing, serious.
Minor
Teachers indicate to students when one of their behaviours is problematic. Students have a choice to address the behaviour
on the spot. Students who can accept responsibility for their actions and change the problematic behaviour do not need to
have any further input from their teachers. For example, a student who has not completed homework may redeem him/
herself by apologising and negotiating to hand the work in the next day.
We expect that most of the regular behaviour issues seen in school can be dealt with quickly by working through the
Teshuvah process – recognise, express regret, reconcile, refrain from repeating.
Ongoing
Students who do not accept responsibility for their actions or who do not change their behaviour will be placed on a
monitoring card and required to attend an after-school detention with Mr Bartlett. For example, despite apologies and
negotiations to hand in late homework, a student continues to “forget” his/her homework. A student in this scenario may be
placed on a monitoring card.
We expect that with the constant reinforcement over a period of time, the student would make the change that is needed.
Serious
Serious, dangerous or urgent issues are reported immediately to the Deputy Principal. Likewise, students who have not dealt
with a minor or ongoing issue will be sent to the Deputy Principal. Lastly, the Principal may become involved in situations
that are particularly serious.
Case Management may be introduced at any stage when issues arise that warrant such intervention. There are some student matters that require specific and ongoing attention beyond the
regular scope of a tutor, class teacher or Head of House. In these cases one person needs to be assigned as the Case Manager. The staff members who may be Case Managers are the Deputy
Principal, Director of Studies, Director of the Specialist Learning Centre, School Nurse, Coach or the School Counsellor.
The types of student matters that require Case Management include:
• Students with severe attendance problems
• Students with severe medical conditions
• Students with severe psychological conditions
• Students experiencing severe trauma
• Students with severe disabilities
• Students experiencing ongoing conditions
• Students experiencing a combination of conditions or situations
• Students with severe behavioural problems
I am excited to be writing my first article in Ma Nishma as the new Director of
have relished in being a part of the myriad opportunities provided at Emanuel
School for our students' learning. From the Teaching for Understanding framework
guiding the development of our teaching programs to the Cultures of Thinking
pedagogy that guides our teachers in leading students on a path of deep, critical
and reflective thinking, Emanuel School students learn in a rich educational
environment in which a love of learning is both encouraged and nurtured. We
have a proud history of outstanding results at HSC level and throughout the High
School at external examinations, competitions and the like. Emanuel School is
consistently attracting families who seek a School that provides opportunities for
children to excel academically, while encouraging a healthy balance with the
students' personal wellbeing and expression of their individual Jewish identity. I
feel privileged to be able to lead the learning of our students and teachers in such
an inclusive, balanced environment. I look forward to meeting with many of you
Here comes Adar… time to get happy!
JEWISH LIFE
NEWS
The Talmud (Ta’anit 29a) states ‘When Adar arrives, we increase our joy’.
On Monday 11 February we are welcoming in the month of Adar with our
‘Crazy Hat Day’. Students are invited to come to school in their regular
school uniform paired with a creative, imaginative crazy hat or headpiece
and a gold coin as tzedakah.
The mitzvah of tzedakah (righteous giving) teaches us that we have a
responsibility to care of those less fortunate in our society. Giving is also a
way to increase our happiness - through the joy of giving and helping others.
For Purim we will be doing a number of tzedakah activities to support
OzHarvest, a charity that collects food and funds to help feed Sydney’s
needy and homeless. As we have done in previous years, we will be inviting
families to help create a mishloach manot (food gift) pack to be distributed
amongst the residents of Montefiore.
Mr Adam Carpenter
Jewish Life Teacher
Here are some ideas for increasing your joy and happiness:
" Show and express gratitude and appreciation to friends and family
" Appreciate all that is positive in your life
" Smile and laugh more often
" Do not to stress over the ‘small stuff’
" Try something new over the coming weeks
" Spend time enjoying nature
" Share jokes and funny stories with your family and friends
" Celebrate Purim at your synagogue and with the community.
RABIN BUGLE
Welcome back Rabinites! I trust you are all ready for another year at Emanuel School!
This year, 2013 may be the Chinese year of the Snake, but at Emanuel School it is the
Year of Rabin! Rashi may have stolen the Ezekiel Cup from us in the dramatic musical
battle of late last year, Szenes may have done the same the year before, but those two
losses have done nothing to dampen our spirits. We may have lost Mr Haesler, but under
the new leadership of Mr Cassarchis, the mighty Rabinites will finally claim what is
rightfully theirs! And without further ado, an interview with Mr Cassarchis will give you
all you need to know about our new leader.
RB: How does it feel standing in the shoes of Rabin’s inspirational former leader
Mr Haesler?
GC: I am rather excited to be appointed as Head of Rabin and to continue the efforts of
Mr Haesler who has set a foundation for us to grow and succeed well into the future.
I look forward to continue taking both the students and staff on a journey that will
embrace success, foster collaboration and team work amongst all Rabinites and most
importantly teach all the skill of bouncing back after defeat (this should never really
happen though).
Mr Guy Cassarchis
Head of Rabin
RB: What are your goals for you career as Rabin Head of House?
GC: My goals include the following: to encourage maximum participation by all students
for ALL House events, to develop confidence, team work and a will to do things for the
betterment of others and not always one’s self, to foster all Rabinites to have an holistic
outlook on life whilst striving to do their best at all times and to win the Ezekiel Cup in
2013 and then not to lose it again for a very long time!
RB: So far, how does Emanuel compare to the other schools you have taught at?
GC: A difficult question to answer so early into my transition thus far, however, the
students have been lovely with their kind and friendly approach to all facets of the dayto-day
routines at Emanuel. I was very impressed with the warm welcomes from a
number of students on my first few days at school, in particular from my Year 12 PDHPE
class who have been absolutely fantastic with embracing me as their new teacher.
Emanuel is a warm and welcoming educational institution, thank you to everybody!
RB: The swimming carnival is the first Inter-House event under your leadership. How
important is it for Rabin to win?
GC: Winning is everything as who ever really remembers second place! As this is the first
House event for the 2013 school year we need to attain maximum points by having
everyone participate in as many events as possible on the day of the carnival. Maximum
participation will give us maximum points and put us up there with a chance to win. We
need a great start in our effort to win the Ezekiel Cup, but this cannot be done unless the
entire House participates in everything, all year.
RB: For the last two years, Rabin have come close to winning the Ezekiel Cup, yet have
lost both times. To what extent will you go to make sure the Mighty Rabinites do not
achieve the same results this year?
GC: The Ezekiel Cup must return to Rabin in 2013, but the only way this will occur is
dependent on you, the student body. As a leader, I am only as successful as the people
who are around me, the student body of Rabin. I will use all my skills, knowledge and
contacts to be as successful as we can this year, but our end results will reflect the entire
House spirit: "Close enough is never good enough!”
RB: What message or quote can you leave with us that sums up your attitude towards
leading Rabin in the future years?
GC: My message to all Rabinites is this: aim for success, not perfection. Never give up
your right to be wrong, because then you will lose the ability to learn new things and
move forward with your life. Remember that fear always lurks behind
perfectionism. Confronting your fears and allowing yourself the right
to be human can, paradoxically, make you a far happier and more
productive person. "SUCCESS BREEDS SUCCESS"
The BIG Three Zero
MARKETING &
COMMUNICATIONS
At the whole-school assembly on Tuesday afternoon, the MPH was resplendently
decorated by the High School Madrichim, with 30 th Anniversary balloons bobbing in
the breeze, flags and bunting adorning the exterior and a huge number 30 dominating
the stage, reminding us that it’s the School’s 30 th Anniversary year.
There were speeches, prayers, a very moving blessing by Rabbi Conyer who was
accompanied by staff, Madrichim and two very wide-eyed and brave Kornmehl
children. The Madrichim showed their digital interviews – Parkinson-style – where they
had asked students about what being 30 meant to them and where they think they
would be in 30 years’ time. Most of the students answered that 30 means ‘old’ – great
for the School’s gravitas, not so great for those of us for whom 30 is a distant memory!
After cutting the huge 30 th anniversary cake, the combined voices of 750 people singing
Yom Huledet Sameach accompanied by streamers and noise makers added to the
exploding sense of joy and belonging. Celebration cupcakes were quickly devoured
and shiny lapel pins proudly worn – indicative of a wonderful year ahead.
Thanks to the Madrichim for all their work and enthusiasm, the staff who all pitched in
to make the event such a success, Adam Harpaz for performing with such passion, and
of course, to the whole Emanuel Community who collectively ensure that we will be
celebrating in another 30 years’ time!
Mrs Michelle Favero
Below is an extract from the 30 th Assembly speech by High School Head Madrichim,
Sam Wrublewski and Alexandra Wolf.
“Our Founders’ vision was the Emanuel School, a place of acceptance, love, care,
learning, Judaism and ambition. And after years of planning, in 1983, The Emanuel
School officially opened with 53 children from Years K-6. But this dream was special, as
it was built for the purpose of other dreams to flourish.
1983 was a year of many historical moments. And now, 30 years later, here Emanuel
stands, loudly and proudly on the top of Avoca hill, looking around and thinking “Who
knew being thirty would look this good!?” And it is absolutely true. Emanuel is thirty,
flirty and thriving, with intense ruach sessions, heritage-listed as well as modern, stateof-the-art
buildings, music, drama, art, laptops, sport, new combination locks, a
booming Jewish life and endless pride. We are definitely not your average institution.
Although at 30 years old, Emanuel School is not sticking to the routine of ageing.
Emanuel has the imagination and belief of a 5 year old, the courage of a 10 year old,
the commitment and Jewish soul of our 12 and 13 year old bar and bat mitzvah
students, the spirit and ambition of teenagers, the knowledge of all of our 21 year old
teachers and staff, the love and care of every single parent and the experience and
warmth of loving grandparents. Emanuel is not sticking to the routine of ageing.
But if we cast our minds back to about 20 years ago, Emanuel looked very different to
what it is today. We certainly were not flirty and thriving but rather were struggling to
establish ourselves and survive in this harsh world. The last 30 years of Emanuel’s
existence have not only been filled with moments of joy and pride. There were times
where Emanuel was faced with many serious challenges.
But despite these trials and tribulations, our Founders persevered, using their minds,
spirits and beings to keep their dream of the Emanuel School strong and alive. In 2002,
the newly-refurbished Hana Weisz Building opened as the Maria Tirabosco Library.
2007 marked the opening of the newly refurbished Aron Kleinlehrer Perfoming Arts
Centre. In 2011 the new four-level Kleinlehrer Family Science Building was opened.
The progression of our school has been extraordinary.
And that is why it is so important to acknowledge this stage of Emanuel’s life. We may
be young, and we may be small, but big things come in small packages and as the years
continue Emanuel School is only becoming stronger and stronger. We are now a living
vision of our Founders’ dreams and this is an inspiration for all of us to go forward and
live our own dreams. Emanuel as a school allows each and every one of us to dream
and to achieve our goals.”
