Team Expectations
Instructions: Mountain climbers are wel-prepared and have the correct
supplies to accomplish their mission. This is also true for effective teams.
For a team to achieve its mission and goals, everyone must be aware of
what is expected. Complete the following exercises related to team
expectations.
1. What Are the Most Important Expectations for a Successful Team?: Circle
five expectations you believe are most important in order for your officer team to be
successful. In the blank spaces, write down team expectations not listed that you
feel are essential for this team to be successful.
A. The team has a clear mission and goals developed and supported by the team.
B. A climate of trust exists among the team.
C. Team members genuinely listen to each other.
D. Differences of opinion are encouraged and freely expressed.
E. Each team member is aware of their specific tasks and works to accomplish
them.
F. Open communication exists among team members both in and out of team
setting.
G. Shared leadership roles – Focus on how best to get a project done, not who
controls it.
H. Each team member counts as a valuable part of the team.
I. When team performance breaks down, members focus on solutions rather than
blame.
J. Interpersonal issues and competitive struggles are not allowed to drain team
energies.
K. Team members affirm and support each other.
L. Team members are deeply committed to the success of the team.
M. Team atmosphere is informal, comfortable free from tension.
N. Team members periodically evaluate team performance and make necessary
changes.
