We hope you will join us for an exciting year at Girl Scout Camp! This year, Camp Small Valley in Halifax, 

PA will be your destination station. We have exciting new programs, a new state of the art Adventure 

Course with ropes courses, a climbing wall and zip line, as well as a new archery range and barn! 

Ever hear of Ga-ga? Not the singer – the game! Think you can dodge the ball? Test out your skills in 

our new Ga-ga pit! There is so much to do at camp this summer, you might have trouble fitting it all in! 

Hopefully you are as excited as we are. We have programs for everyone and you still get to choose 

what you want to do at camp. Get ready for fun and adventure at Camp Small Valley. See you soon! 

Dear Parent, 

We are thrilled to have your daughter come to Girl Scout Camp. As we continue to enhance our outdoor 

programs and facilities, we are only able to offer a premier camping experience at Camp Small Valley 

in 2013. The dining hall at Camp Archbald is almost done, but we can’t guarantee it will be ready. But 

don’t worry, Camp Archbald will be up and running in 2014! 

This year, girls will have the optimal camp experience, no matter what activities they choose. Our new 

state of the art Adventure Course includes low and high ropes courses, a climbing wall and a zip line! 

The old favorites are back like swimming, horseback riding, arts and crafts and sports. Plus the new 

archery range is finished and ready for target practice! 

Camp is the perfect opportunity for your daughter to become independent while developing courage, 

confidence and character. 

If she’s not already a Girl Scout, that’s OK! When she signs up for camp, she 

will automatically become a member. Many individual girls attend camp every 

summer. If your camper would like to sign up with a troop later in the fall, we will 

do our best to help find one that suits her schedule.

experience and procedures for registering your daughter for camp. As always,

EXCITING NEWS | As we continue to enhance our camp properties, the 

dining hall at Camp Archbald will be our biggest improvement. While we are 

working hard to make sure this dining hall is the best fit and incorporating 

historical pieces from our previous dining hall, Camp Archbald will be up 

and running for summer camp in 2014.

CAMP SMALL VALLEY 

Camp Small Valley is located in upper Dauphin County. Nearly 800 acres are available for girls to hike, 

horseback ride, geocache or shoot archery. With a state of the art science center, girls can perform science 

experiments or sign up for an astronomy program in our planetarium. There is also a new state of the 

art Adventure Course that includes low and high ropes courses, a climbing wall and a zip line! 

We have something for everyone from dance, theater and sports, to arts and crafts, pottery and swimming 

that includes a bubble beach!

High Ropes Course | This is a seven 

element course starting near the ground and ending 

at a zip line, 50 feet high! Participants traverse 

ropes to get to different platforms and hop across 

floating wooden islands suspended between 

trees. Climbers must then tackle a horizontal ladder 

to a bridge. The final element is a 475 foot zip 

line ride back to the ground! 

Climbing Tower | The climbing tower has multiple walls 

that can accommodate beginners and advanced climbers. Participants 

are connected by a harness to a rope which is attached to 

either a belayer or a team belay. 

Low Ropes | Using cables and ropes, wood platforms, posts 

or beams strung among trees or poles, teams will explore risk 

taking, leadership and communication. Participants can walk tightropes, 

negotiate obstacles, climb walls and navigate through various 

“spider” webs to reach the end of the course.

ADVENTURE 

COURSE 

Giant Swing | This activity requires group participation. 

The participant wears a harness and climbs a ladder to get connected 

to equipment. Once the participant is hanging approximately 

10 feet off of the ground, the team or remainder of the 

group will be instructed to grab the tow line and begin to pull it. 

The further the team pulls the higher the participant goes. 

Leap of Faith | The Leap of Faith participant climbs staples (pegs) 

to reach a platform situated approximately 50 feet in the air that is attached 

to a tree. There are two team belays that connect to the participant. The 

team belays will need the remainder of the team to help with this activity. 

The participant will jump off the platform and try to reach the rope.

MEALS 

At camp, meals are prepared by our professional 

food service crew and served in our dining hall. All 

meals provide a variety of food that is both healthy 

and kid friendly. A fresh salad bar is always offered 

during these serviced meals. Campers have a unit 

breakfast, dinner and a unit pack out lunch at least 

once during the week. Vegetarian and kosher diets 

can be accommodated. Other dietary restrictions 

may also be accommodated; however parents may 

need to supplement acceptable foods for our staff 

to prepare. Please make sure to include dietary 

restrictions on the registration form. 

ABOUT CAMP 

Girls will choose their own adventures for the week. They have the ability 

to plan their own camp and assist in the cookouts that occur throughout the 

week. Every day, there will be an opportunity to choose new activities in addition 

to the ones they have already signed up for. 

A girl may come to camp with a buddy but it is up to each individual girl to 

choose her activities. If her buddy should want to participate in a different activity, 

they may not be together the entire time. 

SLEEPING UNITS 

Living arrangements are assigned by our camp director and are determined 

approximately one week before the start of that camp session. Girls may stay 

in tents, cabins or lodges. The girls are grouped according to their ages. A girl 

may request a buddy and be placed in the same unit. Girls may only request 

one buddy. In return, the buddy must also request them as the unit mate or the 

request may not be honored. Buddies must be in the same grade level and 

both must be in the same program such as Traditional or Ranch Camp. 

RESTROOMS 

Small Valley has mostly flushing toilets with sinks; however a few units do have 

latrines. The latrines have a hand washing station nearby. Girls will schedule 

their times to shower every day and showers are typically taken at the pool 

house.

TRADITIONAL CAMP 

Traditional Camp is for girls in grades two through ten. Traditional campers custom design their own activities 

for the week. Campers may participate in swimming, archery, arts and crafts, the climbing tower, 

ropes courses, sports and more! 

HOW IT WORKS 

Once a camper is registered, a confirmation 

packet will be sent that has the necessary information 

and forms to prepare for this great adventure. 

One form will provide a list of activities from which 

the camper can choose. Some activities are based 

on badges she may want to earn. Review the

TRAIL RIDES 

For an additional fee, you can sign 

your camper up to participate in one 

horseback riding lesson per week 

of camp. We will fit her with a horse 

that is suited to her level of riding 

experience. She will ride in our 

riding ring to get comfortable in the 

saddle and learn about equine safety 

and riding techniques. Thereafter, 

she will head out onto the trail. 

Note: Trail riding is weather dependent but 

actual lessons will still take place rain or 

shine. No refunds.

In addition to the activities she has chosen, she 

will also receive a swimming time and will choose 

daily electives. Elective classes are a great way to 

try something out but perhaps not participate in it 

the entire week. 

TRIPS 

While campers will choose their 

main activities and try a little bit 

of everything, they will also have 

an option to go on a half or full 

day camp trip for no additional 

fee. Trips vary by age, space and 

interest. If there is not enough 

interest or inclement weather, 

trips may be cancelled and girls 

will continue on with their original 

schedule. Trips may include hiking 

or geocaching at a nearby state 

park or on the Appalachian Trail.

At Ranch Camp, girls in grades six 

through ten will develop a relationship 

with the horse that is assigned to her.* 

We offer both English and Western 

styles of riding. Ranch campers learn 

the basic styles of horsemanship depending 

on what style is chosen. 

HOW IT WORKS 

There will be opportunities to advance 

skill levels and keep things challenging. 

Our experienced staff will keep your child 

safe, teach her to expand her knowledge 

and continually challenge her to advance 

to the next level. Ranch campers will still 

participate in swim time, evening activities 

and choose an elective each day. 

Western Riding: June 16–July 19 

English Riding: July 21–August 16 

RECOGNITIONS 

Our badge and bandana program is a way to receive recognition. Each girl attending Ranch Camp 

will earn a horse patch at the end of her first week as well as a colored bandana. 

When campers want to advance their skills and earn the next level bandana and patch rocker, they 

must pass the written test as well as the riding test. At the end of the week, girls can showcase their 

abilities at the horse show, where parents/guardians are invited to watch their campers demonstrate 

their newly formed skills. The show will begin around 3:30 p.m. on Friday. 

*Due to liability on behalf of Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania, it is a requirement that all girls start at the beginner level of riding and basic horsemanship.

ENGLISH VS. WESTERN 

RIDING STYLE 

The Western riding style evolved according to the 

needs of American cowboys. The Western saddle 

helps distribute weight more evenly over the 

horse’s back. The seat is comfortable for long hours 

over rough terrain and has stirrups for a rider’s feet. 

There is also a horn on the saddle (cowboys used it 

for holding a rope). 

English riding takes most of its traditions and equipment 

from European mounted military styles. It 

RANCH 

CAMP 

is also the primary style adopted for hunting and 

jumping competitions and shows. The saddle does 

not have a horn and has a smaller seat than the 

Western saddle. 

Western riders will learn how to hold the reins with 

one hand while sitting the trot with their horse (remaining 

seated in the saddle, following the motion 

of the horse without bouncing). The English style 

requires riders to use both hands to hold the reins 

while posting the trot (rising and sitting in rhythm 

with each stride of the horse). 

Western riding is recommended for beginners and 

English riding is recommended for more experienced 

riders.

girls don’t have to fumble with money for camp 

souvenirs. Girls can get as much as they want,

balance on the package will NOT be refunded. The 

trading post will be open during check-in, throughout 

the week as an elective and during check-out.

CAMP FEES & 

REGISTRATION 

GSHPA offers reasonable camp fees 

that only cover a percentage of the 

direct per person cost of summer camp. 

We offer a variety of ways for camp to 

be affordable for everyone including 

early registration discounts, bundling 

packages for those interested in attending 

more than one week and financial 

assistance for those who qualify. 

BUNDLED PACKAGE 

Sign up for two or more traditional camp 

weeks and receive $25 off each week. 

These must be purchased together and 

not paid for individually. This discount 

cannot be combined with the early bird 

special. 

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE 

Financial assistance (camperships) is 

available for girls registered with GSHPA 

who demonstrate a need for financial 

assistance. Donations from individuals, 

corporations, foundations and United 

Ways help support the campership 

fund. The Campership Application can 

be found on page 17 of this guide. The 

application must be submitted with your 

camper’s registration. Applicants will be 

notified as to whether or not they qualify 

for financial assistance and will be expected 

to pay any balance due by June

After registering your daughter for camp, you will 

receive a confirmation packet. The confirmation 

packet includes several different documents that 

must be completed prior to your camper’s arrival. 

Please bring the forms with you to camp and 

make sure they are filled out in their entirety. To 

ensure the welfare of your child, she will be required 

to get a physical within six months of her 

intended camp stay. You will find this form within 

your confirmation packet.

ADVENTURE BOUND 

Calling all seventh through twelfth graders! Looking for something exciting to do this summer? 

Sign up for one of our Adventure Bound programs and get a new sense of adventure. 

Adventure Bound incorporates traditional camping with the rugged outdoors. Each trip will begin 

at the designated summer camp location. Participants will do team building activities on Sunday 

and prepare for the adventure ahead. Planning meals for the week, packing their equipment and 

getting ready are all a part of this experience. 

This program opportunity is for girls who want a more challenging experience. Please make sure 

your child is comfortable and confident in the adventure that she chooses. 

*Girls will arrive back at camp Thursday evening to join all of the campers in the all-camp activity unless 

otherwise noted. 

BOATS AND BOOTS 

This is a great adventure for girls to try! 

Come to camp on Sunday; depart on 

Monday for a two day river trip down 

the Juniata River. Come back to camp 

and have a go on our Giant Swing or 

take a Leap of Faith on our Adventure 

Course. On Wednesday, get ready to 

head out onto the Appalachian Trail 

– the world famous trail that extends 

from Maine to Georgia. Finish up your 

week on our High Challenge Course 

and Zip Line! 

*Must be a confident swimmer.

SPOKES AND SPLASH 

Head up to the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon 

for this exciting trek! Start it off right 

with a trip down the Pine Creek Gorge. 

Take in the natural beauty and view the 

Bald Eagles. Get onto a bike and check 

out this “Top 10 Great Bike Tour” trail. 

Finish off the trip with an incredible hike 

that offers scenic vistas of Pennsylvania. 

Come back to camp and enjoy the campfire 

and relax before heading home on 

Friday.

CIT I PROGRAM 

The Counselor-in-Training (CIT) Program is for girls in 

grades 10–12. The program helps transition campers 

into counselors. Girls will have the opportunity to hone in 

on their skills by challenging them with new responsibilities 

and a time for growth. 

Pre-camp is required for all CITs. Please plan to attend 

training June 9–13. 

Both the CIT I and II Programs, require you to arrive at 

camp on Sunday and depart on Friday. 

For consideration into the CIT I or II Program, you must 

submit your Registration form by April 30, 2013. You will 

receive notification in the mail by mid-May.

CIT I PROGRAM 

The Counselor-in-Training program offers high 

school girls an opportunity to learn leadership and 

outdoor skills needed to work with girls in the out 

of doors. During the CIT program, CITs will explore 

the areas of camp craft skills, group dynamics, 

child development, program planning skills, camp 

operations and the role of the camp counselor. 

The training program includes regular hours devoted 

to classes, plus actual experience working with 

children under the supervision of camp staff. The 

apprentice program is open on a selective basis to 

those who have passed the initial requirements and 

have received positive recommendations. 

CITs will actively take part in a camp apprenticeship. 

Girls will be required to attend pre-camp 

training June 9–13 at Small Valley. CITs will be 

expected to complete an evaluation and develop 

a program by the end of their term. In addition 

to program development, CITs will shadow and 

support, when needed, various camp staff to fully 

understand the roles everyone takes on at camp. 

For example, a CIT may find herself one day at the 

waterfront, and the next day at the ranch. CITs will 

also spend time observing and gain an understanding 

of the Girl Scout organization, management 

and structure of the camp operation. 

To be eligible to apply, a CIT applicant must be 

at least a second year Girl Scout Senior or be in 

tenth grade to be able to participate in the program. 

Interested girls must fill out the registration and application 

forms. All applications must be postmarked 

by April 30, 2013. Applicants will receive a 

written notification of their application status in the 

mail mid- May. All letters of recommendation must 

be received by USPS or email by May 1.

CIT II PROGRAM 

CIT II PROGRAM 

In order to apply for the CIT II, interested girls must have successfully completed the CIT I Program 

in 2011 or 2012. The CIT II Program is ten weeks including pre-camp. The weekends of 

TAC and Family Camps, you may choose to stay on camp property and assist with programming. 

The CIT II Program is a great opportunity to assist and create some of your own programming in 

conjunction with the camp counselor or activity leader. This opportunity will allow you to bridge 

easily into the camp counselor role for the following year.

TROOP ADVENTURE 

CAMP (TAC) 

Troop Adventure Camp (TAC) is a great way for troops to experience outdoor adventures in a fun 

and safe environment. This is also an awesome way for troops to participate in summer camp 

together. All activities are planned for you! There is no need for an accompanying adult volunteer 

to have completed outdoor training or have any prior experience with camping. 

Attending troops must have at least one accompanying adult who is a certified first aider. All troops 

are to adhere to Girl Scout ratios. Girl Scout ratios will be strictly enforced and GSHPA has the 

right to remove additional adults from the required ratio. 

LODGING AND FACILITIES 

At each location there are different types of lodging: cabins, tents and lodges. Prior to your troop’s 

arrival, you will be assigned a lodging location. Please prepare your girls to stay in tents. Mattresses 

may be on the floor or on cots. In tents, all mattresses are on cots. Most of our sleeping units 

provide latrines nearby. Showering facilities are also available. 

MEALS 

Four meals will be provided as 

well as one snack. Meals on 

Saturday are hot and served cafeteria 

style. In addition to our hot 

selection, you may also choose to 

eat from our salad bar that offers 

a variety of cold salads. On Sunday, 

a continental breakfast will 

be served. If there are any dietary 

restrictions or allergies, please 

make sure to contact the Outdoor 

Program Manager and state it on 

your registration form.

General Camping Questions 

Who is the camp staff? 

Camp staff members are selected for their 

leadership skills, maturity and ability to work 

with girls. Training is provided to each staff 

member to empower each girl to learn and enjoy 

her camp experience. Each camp maintains 

a girl to staff ratio that follows Girl Scout standards. 

Our staff comes from all over the world. 

We believe in cultural diversity and the benefits 

of exposing others to them. 

What are your facilities like? 

Our sleeping quarters are a combination of 

tents, cabins and lodges. Most sleeping units 

do not have restrooms attached. There are 

toilets/latrines, washing stations and showers 

nearby. 

We have a full service dining hall that provides 

three meals a day. Girls will participate in outdoor 

cooking for a dinner, pack out lunch and a 

breakfast at their units at least once during the 

week. 

Where will my camper stay? 

Camp is an overnight experience with other 

girls under the careful supervision of trained 

camp counselors. Our camps are divided into 

living areas called units. Unit group sizes vary. 

Campers are placed in units according to their 

age. Campers sleep on cots or bunk beds on 

mattresses or mattresses on the floor. All tents 

have cots with mattresses. Counselors sleep in 

the same unit but in separate sleeping quarters. 

FAQS 

Will girls earn Girl Scout badges and/or patches 

while at camp? 

GSUSA has modified its existing program to the 

Girls Guide to Girl Scouting. Several badges 

and patches have been discontinued and now 

follow the National Proficiency Badges. Your 

camper will earn at least one proficiency badge 

as well as a fun patch. 

How do I know what activities my camper will 

participate in? 

You will receive a program form. Sit down with 

your camper and work through to identify which 

badge she would like to earn. You will be asked 

to give your top three choices, and she will 

earn one of those three. In addition to picking 

her core activities, she will also have the opportunity 

to choose a few extra activities on a 

daily basis.

I would like to sign my camper up for horseback 

riding, when will she have the opportunity 

to do this? 

One of her two elective times on her schedule 

will be dedicated to horseback riding. 

After registering for camp, you will be mailed a 

detailed packing list in the camp confirmation 

packet. The confirmation packet also includes 

pick up and drop off times, FAQs, Trading Post 

information, wildlife information and more.

My camper would like to participate in horseback 

riding, is there anything specific she 

needs to know? 

Whether you are attending Ranch Camp or 

Traditional Camp, any girl who participates in 

a horseback riding activity while at camp is 

required to wear long pants with smooth soled 

boots or shoes that have a heel. Riding helmets 

are a requirement and will be supplied by 

Girl Scouts. If your camper has her own riding 

helmet, it must be ASTM (American Society of 

Testing and Materials) and SEI (Safety Equipment 

Institute) certified. 

What if the weather isn’t cooperating when 

my camper is scheduled to go horseback riding? 

If there is inclement weather or extreme heat, 

we attempt to reschedule your camper for another 

day. However, if the weather makes riding 

unsafe or impossible, we will still teach her 

equine safety, a grooming session, and give 

her an “up close” opportunity with the horses. 

Refunds will not be issued. 

What will my daughter need to bring to 

camp? 

What can we expect to find in the Trading 

Post? 

We provide various items such as: hooded 

sweatshirts, camp T-shirt, pens, journals, 

stuffed animals and other material items. We 

do not sell food or beverages at our trading 

post. Items vary in price from $1-$20. 

My child has special needs, how will she be accommodated? 

Our inclusive environment helps girls of all 

abilities to live, play and learns in a non-competitive 

environment. If your child requires a 

special diet, special health care or has a men-

tal or emotional disability or other condition, 

you should contact the Camp Director prior to 

registering your camper. At that time, you can 

discuss the nature of your camper’s needs. It 

will then be determined if the camp can provide 

support, supervision and necessary accommodations 

for your camper to have a safe and 

fulfilling camping experience. Handicapped 

accessible living areas are available. 

Why aren’t you offering summer camp at 

Camp Archbald? 

According to our camp development plan, we 

cannot ensure that Camp Archbald’s dining 

hall will be completed in time. But don’t worry, 

Camp Archbald will be hosting summer camp 

again in 2014! 

Registration Questions 

When can we register? 

Registration for 2013 Sleep Away Camp opens 

January 1, 2013. Registrations received before 

the opening date will be processed as if they 

were received on January 1, 2013. 

Where do I send the form? 

Mail your registration form(s) to: GSHPA, Attn: 

Sleep Away Camp Registrar, 350 Hale Avenue, 

Harrisburg, PA 17104. Forms can also be 

downloaded in English and Spanish from our 

website, www.gshpa.org. 

Can my camper attend with a buddy? 

Yes! Your camper can request another camper 

as a buddy. On the form, you will find the buddy 

request space. Please provide her name. Make 

sure her buddy writes your camper’s name as 

well. Buddies must be participating in Traditional 

Camp or Ranch Camp together. Buddy 

requests must also be in the same grade level. 

Multiple buddies cannot be guaranteed placement 

together. A buddy request must be mutual 

or the request will not be honored. 

If I am signing my camper up for multiple 

weeks, can she stay over on the weekends? 

Unfortunately, she cannot. We have different 

programs and trainings that overlap during the 

weekends.

Can my child still go to camp even though she 

is not a registered Girl Scout? 

Yes! Girl Scout camp is for all girls! For non- 

Girl Scouts there is an additional $12 nonrefundable 

fee which must be included with the 

deposit. 

When is the balance for our Sleep Away Camp 

fee due? 

The balance is due June 1, 2013. All campers 

registering after June 1, 2013 must pay in full. 

Is financial assistance available? 

Yes! Financial assistance (campership) is 

available for girls registered with Girl Scouts 

in the Heart of Pennsylvania who demonstrate 

the need for financial assistance. Donations 

from various sources help support the campership 

fund. A financial assistance form must 

be submitted with your camper’s registration. 

Applicants will be notified as to whether or not 

they qualify for financial assistance and will be 

expected to pay any balance due by June 1, 

2013. 

Confirmation Questions 

How and when will we know if we are officially 

registered for camp? 

Confirmations, along with your statement of 

balance will be sent approximately three weeks 

after your registration is received. 

What will the confirmation packet contain? 

The confirmation packet will contain information 

regarding packing lists, drop off and pick up 

times, wildlife, trading post, check in and checkout 

procedures, kapers, food, lodging, home 

sickness, behaviors and expectations, camp 

staff, general questions, directions to camp and 

more! You will also receive forms that must be 

filled out and brought with you to camp. Please 

do not mail the confirmation packet forms to the 

Harrisburg office. 

Cancellations and Refunds 

Are deposits transferrable? 

Deposits may be transferred to a different week 

for the same girl. Deposits are not transferrable 

between girls. 

Are refunds given? 

A full refund, less the $50 non-refundable deposit, 

will be processed upon written request if: 

• the request is made three weeks prior 

to the start of camp 

• cancellation is due to illness and a 

physician’s statement of inability to 

participate is submitted within two weeks 

of the scheduled attendance 

• cancellation is due to serious illness or 

death in the family 

Refunds will NOT be issued for no-shows.
