TRADITIONAL CAMP<br />

Traditional Camp is for girls <strong>in</strong> grades two through ten. Traditional <strong>camp</strong>ers custom design <strong>the</strong>ir own activities<br />

for <strong>the</strong> week. Campers may participate <strong>in</strong> swimm<strong>in</strong>g, archery, arts and crafts, <strong>the</strong> climb<strong>in</strong>g tower,<br />

ropes courses, sports and more!<br />

HOW IT WORKS<br />

Once a <strong>camp</strong>er is registered, a confirmation<br />

packet will be sent that has <strong>the</strong> necessary <strong>in</strong>formation<br />

and forms to prepare for this great adventure.<br />

One form will provide a list <strong>of</strong> activities from which<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>camp</strong>er can choose. Some activities are based<br />

on badges she may want to earn. Review <strong>the</strong><br />

BADGES AND<br />

PATCHES<br />

When <strong>the</strong> confirmation<br />

packet is received<br />

<strong>the</strong>re will also be a<br />

sheet <strong>of</strong>fer<strong>in</strong>g core<br />

activities that work<br />

toward badges. Each<br />

<strong>camp</strong>er will pick <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

top three from <strong>the</strong> list<br />

and will earn one <strong>of</strong><br />

those badges as well<br />

as a fun patch.<br />

For an additional fee, you can sign<br />

your <strong>camp</strong>er up to participate <strong>in</strong> one<br />

horseback rid<strong>in</strong>g lesson per week<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>camp</strong>. We will fit her with a horse<br />

that is suited to her level <strong>of</strong> rid<strong>in</strong>g<br />

experience. She will ride <strong>in</strong> our<br />

rid<strong>in</strong>g r<strong>in</strong>g to get comfortable <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

saddle and learn about equ<strong>in</strong>e safety<br />

and rid<strong>in</strong>g techniques. Thereafter,<br />

she will head out onto <strong>the</strong> trail.<br />

Note: Trail rid<strong>in</strong>g is wea<strong>the</strong>r dependent but<br />

actual lessons will still take place ra<strong>in</strong> or<br />

sh<strong>in</strong>e. No refunds.<br />

programs and decide with her what badge(s) she<br />

would like to achieve.<br />

In addition to <strong>the</strong> activities she has chosen, she<br />

will also receive a swimm<strong>in</strong>g time and will choose<br />

daily electives. Elective classes are a great way to<br />

try someth<strong>in</strong>g out but perhaps not participate <strong>in</strong> it<br />

<strong>the</strong> entire week.<br />

TRIPS<br />

While <strong>camp</strong>ers will choose <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

ma<strong>in</strong> activities and try a little bit<br />

<strong>of</strong> everyth<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong>y will also have<br />

an option to go on a half or full<br />

day <strong>camp</strong> trip for no additional<br />

fee. Trips vary by age, space and<br />

ENGLISH VS. WESTERN<br />

RIDING STYLE<br />

The Western rid<strong>in</strong>g style evolved accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong><br />

needs <strong>of</strong> American cowboys. The Western saddle<br />

helps distribute weight more evenly over <strong>the</strong><br />

horse’s back. The seat is comfortable for long hours<br />

over rough terra<strong>in</strong> and has stirrups for a rider’s feet.<br />

There is also a horn on <strong>the</strong> saddle (cowboys used it<br />

for hold<strong>in</strong>g a rope).<br />

English rid<strong>in</strong>g takes most <strong>of</strong> its traditions and equipment<br />

from European mounted military styles. It<br />

RANCH<br />

CAMP<br />

is also <strong>the</strong> primary style adopted for hunt<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

jump<strong>in</strong>g competitions and shows. The saddle does<br />

not have a horn and has a smaller seat than <strong>the</strong><br />

Western saddle.<br />

Western riders will learn how to hold <strong>the</strong> re<strong>in</strong>s with<br />

one hand while sitt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> trot with <strong>the</strong>ir horse (rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

seated <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> saddle, follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> motion<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> horse without bounc<strong>in</strong>g). The English style<br />

requires riders to use both hands to hold <strong>the</strong> re<strong>in</strong>s<br />

while post<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> trot (ris<strong>in</strong>g and sitt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> rhythm<br />

with each stride <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> horse).<br />

Western rid<strong>in</strong>g is recommended for beg<strong>in</strong>ners and<br />

English rid<strong>in</strong>g is recommended for more experienced<br />

riders.<br />

Where will my <strong>camp</strong>er stay?<br />

Camp is an overnight experience with o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

girls under <strong>the</strong> careful supervision <strong>of</strong> tra<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

<strong>camp</strong> counselors. Our <strong>camp</strong>s are divided <strong>in</strong>to<br />

liv<strong>in</strong>g areas called units. Unit group sizes vary.<br />

Campers are placed <strong>in</strong> units accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

age. Campers sleep on cots or bunk beds on<br />

mattresses or mattresses on <strong>the</strong> floor. All tents<br />

<strong>the</strong> same unit but <strong>in</strong> separate sleep<strong>in</strong>g quarters.<br />

FAQS<br />

Will girls earn <strong>Girl</strong> Scout badges and/or patches<br />

while at <strong>camp</strong>?<br />

GSUSA has modified its exist<strong>in</strong>g program to <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Girl</strong>s Guide to <strong>Girl</strong> Scout<strong>in</strong>g. Several badges<br />

and patches have been discont<strong>in</strong>ued and now<br />

follow <strong>the</strong> National Pr<strong>of</strong>iciency Badges. Your<br />

<strong>camp</strong>er will earn at least one pr<strong>of</strong>iciency badge<br />

as well as a fun patch.<br />

How do I know what activities my <strong>camp</strong>er will<br />

participate <strong>in</strong>?<br />

You will receive a program form. Sit down with<br />

your <strong>camp</strong>er and work through to identify which<br />

badge she would like to earn. You will be asked<br />

to give your top three choices, and she will<br />

earn one <strong>of</strong> those three. In addition to pick<strong>in</strong>g<br />

her core activities, she will also have <strong>the</strong> opportunity<br />

to choose a few extra activities on a<br />

daily basis.<br />

37

I would like to sign my <strong>camp</strong>er up for horseback<br />

rid<strong>in</strong>g, when will she have <strong>the</strong> opportunity<br />

to do this?<br />

One <strong>of</strong> her two elective times on her schedule<br />

will be dedicated to horseback rid<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

After register<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>camp</strong>, you will be mailed a<br />

detailed pack<strong>in</strong>g list <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>camp</strong> confirmation<br />

helmet, it must be ASTM (American Society <strong>of</strong><br />
