Come and join us for an exciting adventure at Girl Scout Camp! There are many
brand new camp programs included in this summer’s Sleep Away Camp schedule,
along with plenty of previous favorites. Girl Scout Camp offers something for
everyone!

The 100th Anniversary of Girl Scouting is an exciting and invigorating time to be a
part of our movement to empower today’s girls to become tomorrow’s leaders.
We are thrilled to introduce many new camp program offerings to this summer’s
schedule! While we still continue to follow last year’s format, we have made a
few improvements to better ensure your daughter(s) gets to try lots of different
activities. Summer Camp still has a variety of options including arts and crafts,
pottery, sports, field games, horseback riding, swimming, archery and so much
more! Camp is the perfect time to introduce your child to independence while also
developing courage, confidence and character.
Remember, your daughter doesn’t have to be a Girl Scout to sign up for Girl Scout
Camp - she’ll actually become a member when she attends camp! Many individual
girls choose to attend summer camp; if your camper would like to sign up for Girl
Scouting in the fall, we will help you find a local troop or sign up for fall programming.

Lancaster County and Camp Archbald in Susquehanna County. Girls will choose between Traditional or Ranch Camp and once
they arrive, will get to plan their own week long adventure!
Both camps are fully accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA) and meet the requirements of the Commonwealth of
Pennsylvania and Girl Scouts of the USA.

Camp Furnace Hills
Camp Furnace Hills is located in northeastern Lancaster County. Girls can participate in loads of activities in the great outdoors!
Whether it’s outdoor cooking, hiking, horseback riding, archery or swimming, there’s something for everyone! Accommodations
range from modern facilities to rustic cabins, cabents and platform tents.
It is fully accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA) and meets the requirements of the

Camp Archbald
Camp Archbald, located in Susquehanna County in the woods of Endless Mountains in northeastern Pennsylvania, is the second
oldest Girl Scout Camp in America. At Archbald, girls can enjoy nature the way it was intended, surrounded by beautiful forests
and a spring-fed glacial lake. There are various sleeping quarters such as platform tents, cabins and even boathouses! Adventure
awaits with boating, canoeing, archery, hiking, horseback riding, arts and crafts, swimming and so much more!
It is fully accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA) and meets the
requirements of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and Girl Scouts of the USA.

General Information
About Camp
At Girl Scout Camp, girls choose their adventures, let their imaginations roam, and make lifelong friends and memories. Girls plan
their own camp program during the day and assist in planning cookouts, designing and preparing unit skits/songs to perform for
the rest of camp in the evening. We offer two distinct camping tracks: Traditional and Ranch Camp.
Sleeping Units
Living arrangements are assigned by camp staff and are determined
approximately one to three weeks prior to arrival. Girls may stay in tents,
cabins or lodges organized into units.
Girls are grouped into units according to their ages. Girls can register
with a buddy and be placed in the same sleeping unit. Girls may only
request one buddy. In return, the buddy must also request them as
a unit mate or the request will not be honored. Buddies must be in
the same grade level and both must be in the same program such as
Traditional or Ranch Camp.
Meals
At camp, meals are prepared by our professional food service crew and served
in our dining hall. All meals are served hot, cafeteria style, and provide a great
variety of food that is both healthy and kid friendly. In addition to the hot meal,
girls can also choose to eat from our salad bar that offers a variety of fresh fruits
and vegetables. Campers have a unit breakfast and dinner and a unit pack out
lunch at least once during the week. During these meals, the girls plan what
they are going to cook over the campfire. Vegetarian and kosher diets can
be accommodated. Other dietary restrictions may also be accommodated;
however parents may need to supplement acceptable foods for our staff to
prepare.
Restroom Facilities
At both camp locations, most restrooms are either latrines or clivuses and include hand washing stations known as bird baths. At
Camp Furnace Hills, showers are taken in the pool house after daily swim times. At Camp Archbald, girls have their shower time
scheduled every day for the a.m. or p.m.
Confirmation
After registering your daughter for camp, you will receive a
confirmation packet. The confirmation packet includes several
different documents that must be completed prior to your
camper’s arrival. Please bring the required forms with you to camp
and make sure they are filled out in their entirety. To ensure the
welfare of your child, she will be required to get a physical within
12 months of her intended camp stay. You will find this form
within your confirmation packet or online at www.gshpa.org
under forms.

Traditional Camp
Traditional Camp is for girls in grades two through ten. Traditional campers custom design their own program for the week.
Campers may participate in swimming, archery, arts and crafts, sports and more!
How It Works
On Sunday, girls are able to schedule four activities they want to
participate in for the week. One of those activities periods will be
designated for swim time. This year we have created two additional
activity periods called Daily Choice Activities. These are flexible
activity periods every day for girls to sign up to try new things that
differ from the ones they have scheduled for the entire week.
Badges and Patches
GSUSA has designed a new set of National Proficiency Badges. In
line with these guidelines, each girl will earn at least one National
Proficiency Badge and one fun patch by attending camp this
summer.
Trail Rides
For an additional fee, You can sign up your camper to
participate in one horseback riding lesson per week of camp.
We will fit her with a horse that is suited to your daughter’s
level of riding experience. She will ride in our riding ring to get
comfortable in the saddle and learn about equine safety and
riding techniques. Thereafter, she will head out onto the trail.
Note: Trail riding is weather dependent but actual lessons will
still take place rain or shine.

Trips
While campers will choose their main activities and try a
little bit of everything, they will also have an option to go on
a half or full day off camp trip for no additional fee. Trips
vary by age, space and interest. If there is not enough
interest or inclement weather, trips may be cancelled and
girls will continue on with their original schedule. Trips can
be nature oriented, canoeing, geocaching, hiking and
more. Options vary according to camp location.

Ranch Camp
At Ranch Camp, girls in grades six through ten will develop a relationship with the horse assigned to her. We offer both English
(Camp Furnace Hills) and Western (Camp Archbald) styles of riding. Ranch campers learn the basic styles of horsemanship
depending on which style is chosen.* Please keep in mind, space is limited.
How It Works
There will be opportunities to advance skill levels and learn to keep
it challenging. Our experienced staff will keep your children safe,
teach them to continue their growing knowledge and continually
challenge them to advance to the next level. Ranch campers will still
participate in swim time, evening activities and more with campers
attending Traditional Camp.
Recognitions
Our badge and bandana program is a way to receive recognition.
Each girl attending Ranch Camp will earn a horse badge at the end
of her first week as well as a colored bandana. When campers
want to advance their skills and earn the next level bandana and
badge rocker, they must pass the written test as well as the riding
test. At the end of the week, girls can showcase their abilities at
the horse show, where we welcome parents/guardians to watch
their children demonstrate their newly formed skills.
* Due to liability on behalf of Girl Scouts in the Heart of
Pennsylvania, it is a requirement that all girls start at
the beginner level of riding and basic horsemanship.

Trail Rides & Trips
While girls will learn to advance their skill, they also are able
to, as a group, choose a dawn or twilight ride, an overnight
trip and set up camp.
English vs. West Riding Styles
The Western riding style basically evolved according to
the needs of American cowboys. The Western saddle
helps distribute weight more evenly over the horse’s back.
The seat is comfortable for long hours over rough terrain
and has stirrups for a rider’s feet. There is also a horn on the saddle
(cowboys used it for holding a rope).
English riding takes most of its traditions and equipment from
European mounted military styles. It is also the primary style adopted
for hunting and jumping competitions and shows. The saddle does not have a horn
and has a much smaller seat than the Western saddle.
Western riders will learn how to hold the reins with one hand while sitting the trot
of their horse (remaining seated in the saddle, following the motion of the horse
without bouncing.) The English style requires riders to use both hands to hold
the reins while posting the trot (rising and sitting in rhythm with each stride of the
horse).
Western riding is recommended for beginners and English riding is recommended
for more experienced riders.

Camp Fees
GSHPA offers reasonable camp fees that only cover a percentage of the direct per person costs of offering summer camp. We
offer a variety of ways for camp to be affordable for everyone including early registration discounts, bundling packages for those
interested in attending more than one week and financial assistance for those who qualify based on financial need.
Traditional Camp - $350/week
Add a horseback riding session for an additonal $25.
Ranch Camp - $450/week
Early Bird Special
Register for camp on or before April 15, 2012 and receive $15 off Traditional, Ranch or
Adventure Bound (see page 15) camp price. This discount cannot be combined with
the bundled packaging.
Bundled Packages
Sign up for two or more Traditional Camp weeks and receive $25 off each week. These
must be purchased together and not paid for individually. This discount cannot be
combined with the Early Bird Special.
Financial Assistance
Financial assistance (camperships) is available for girls registered with Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania who demonstrate
a need for financial assistance. Donations from individuals, corporations, foundations and United Ways help support the
campership fund. The Campership Application can be found on page 13 of this guide. The application must be submitted
with your camper’s registration. Applicants will be notified as to whether or not they qualify for financial assistance and will be
expected to pay any balance due by June 1, 2012.

Adventure Bound
Calling All 9th – 12th Graders!
Looking for something exciting to do this summer? Sign up for one of our Adventure Bound Programs and get a new sense of
adventure. Adventure Bound is a new aspect and incorporates traditional camping with the rugged outdoors.
Each trip will begin at the designated Summer Camp location. Participants will do team building activities on Sunday and prepare
for the adventure ahead. Planning meals for the week, packing their equipment and getting ready are all a part of this experience.
This program opportunity is for older girls who want a more challenging experience. Please make sure your child is comfortable
and confident in the adventure she chooses.
Camp Furnace Hills
Boat, Bike and Backpack
This is a great adventure for you to try! Come to camp on
Sunday and depart on Monday for an exciting three day hike
on the Appalachian Trail, followed by a day of boating on the
Lehigh River. As the final part of this trip, try biking in the Lehigh
Gorge. Check out what our area has to offer through its natural
beauty and landscapes. Must be able to walk long distances,
ride a bicycle and swim.

Location: Camp Furnace Hills
Climb and Canoe
Try challenging yourself to some indoor climbing at a local
climbing gym and then head out onto real rock to discover
your true potential! After your climb, head back to Camp
Furnace Hills to recover before heading out onto the
Susquehanna for the next few days. Return to camp for the
all-camp fire and relax before heading home on Friday. Must
be a confident swimmer.

Adventure Bound

Camp Archbald
River Rats
Get a load of this two week trip! During your first week of camp,
you’ll learn basic canoe and camping skills to get you prepared
for a trip down the Susquehanna River. The first half of the
adventure, you will be able to plan your menu and practice
your strokes while still participating in traditional camp
activities. The second half of the trip, prepare yourself for a 75
mile expedition on the river. Enjoy the beautiful scenery and
the challenging activities as you earn the canoeing segment of
the GSHPA Adventurer Patch. Must be a confident swimmer.

Adventure Pack
Get a taste of this two week action packed adventure! Begin
your trip on the Upper Delaware, canoeing your way down
through rapids and flat water watching for Bald Eagles and
checking out the scenery. Come back to camp; rest up before
heading out on the West Rim trail for two nights, cool down
with a rafting trip down the Pine Gorge before ending your trip
with a climbing experience.

Counselor in Training
CIT I Program
The Counselor-in-Training (CIT) Program is for girls in grades 10-12. The program helps transition campers into counselors. Girls
will have the opportunity to hone in on their skills by challenging them with new responsibilities and a time for growth.
Both the CIT I and II Programs, require you to arrive at camp on Sunday and depart on Friday.
For consideration into the CIT I or II Program, you must submit your registration form by April 30, 2012. You will receive notification
in the mail by mid-May.
CIT I Program - $150 - 5 Weeks | $250 - 9 Weeks
The Counselor-in-Training program offers high school girls an opportunity to learn leadership and outdoor skills needed to work
with girls in the out of doors. During the CIT I program, CITs will explore the areas of camp craft skills, group dynamics, child
development, program planning skills, camp operations and the role of the camp counselor. The training program includes
regular hours devoted to classes, plus actual experience working with children under the supervision of camp staff. The
apprentice program is open on a selective basis to those who have passed the initial requirements and have received positive
recommendations.
CITs will actively take part in a camp apprenticeship. Girls will be required to attend pre-camp training the week of June 10-15
as well as one or both of the four (4) week Sleep Away Camps. CITs will be expected to complete an evaluation and develop a
program by the end of their term. In addition to program development, CITs will shadow and support, when needed, various camp
staff to fully understand the roles everyone takes on at camp. For example, a CIT may find herself one day at the waterfront, and
the next day at ranch. CITs will also spend time observing and gain an understanding of the Girl Scout organization, management
and structure of the camp operation.
To be eligible to apply, a CIT applicant must be at least a second year Girl Scout Senior or in grade 10 to be able to participate
in the program. Interested girls must fill out the registration and application forms. All applications must be postmarked by
April 30, 2012. Applicants will receive a written notification of their application status in the mail by mid-May. All Letters of
Recommendation must be received by USPS or email by May 1, 2012.

program is nine (9) weeks including pre-camp. It will be required that you travel to both camps. The weekends of TAC and Family
camps, you may choose whether you want to stay on camp property and assist with programming. The CIT II program is a great
opportunity to assist and create some of your own programming in conjunction with the camp counselor or activity leader. This
opportunity will allow you to bridge easily into the camp counselor role for the following year.

Troop Adventure Camp
Troop Adventure Camp (TAC) is a great way for troops to experience outdoor adventures in a fun and safe environment. This is
also an awesome way for troops to participate in summer camp together. All activities are planned for you! There is no need for
an accompanying adult volunteer to have completed outdoor training or have any prior experience with camping.
Attending troops must have at least one accompanying adult who is a certified first aider. All troops are to adhere to Girl Scout
ratios. Girl Scout ratios will be strictly enforced and GSHPA has the right to remove additional adults from the required ratio.

Meals
Four meals will be provided as well as two snacks. Meals on Saturday are hot and served cafeteria style. In addition to our
hot selection, you may also choose to eat from our salad bar that offers a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables. On Sunday, a
continental breakfast will be served. If there are any dietary restrictions or allergies, please make sure to contact the Outdoor
Program Manager and state it on your registration form.
Lodging and Facilities
At each location there are different types of lodging: cabins, tents and lodges. Prior to your troop’s arrival, you will be assigned a
lodging location. Please prepare your girls to stay in tents. Mattresses may be on the floor or on cots. In tents, all mattresses are on
cots. Most of our sleeping units provide latrines nearby. Showering facilities are also available.

Upon arrival, each troop will receive their lodging assignment, schedule of events and a camp map. Friday evening, you can
expect a traditional campfire with a snack, ready to go by our experienced summer camp staff after you have settled in. Saturday

swimming, boating/canoeing, arts and crafts, archery, field games, hikes, horseback riding* and more.

General Camping Questions
Who are the camp staff members?
Camp staff members are selected for their leadership skills,
maturity and ability to work with girls. Training is provided to
each staff member to empower each girl to learn and enjoy
her camp experience. Each camp maintains a girl to staff ratio
that follows Girl Scout and American Camping Association
standards. Our staff comes from all over the world. We believe
in cultural diversity and the benefits of exposing others to
them.
What is the American Camp Association (ACA)?
The ACA is the leading authority in child development.
ACA works to preserve, promote and improve the camp
experience. ACA accredited camps meet up to 300 standards
for health, safety and program quality for campers and staff.
All camps follow the safety standards of local municipalities,
state regulations and safety guidelines outlined by Girl Scouts
of the USA (GSUSA).
What are your facilities like?
Our sleeping quarters are a combination of mostly tents,
cabins and lodges. Most sleeping units do not have restrooms
attached. There are latrines, washing stations and showers
nearby.
We have a full service dining hall that provides three meals
a day. Girls will participate in outdoor cooking for a dinner, a
pack out lunch, and a breakfast at their units at least once
during the week.
Where will my camper stay?
Summer Sleep Away Camp is an overnight experience with
other girls under the careful supervision of trained camp
counselors. Our camps are divided into living areas called
units. Unit group sizes vary. Campers are placed in units
according to their age. Campers sleep on cots or bunk beds on
mattresses or mattresses on the floor. All tents have cots with
mattresses. Counselors sleep in the same unit but in separate
sleeping quarters.
Will girls earn Girl Scout badges and/or patches while
at camp?
GSUSA has modified their existing program to the Girls Guide
to Girl Scouting. Several badges and patches have been
discontinued and follow the National Proficiency Badges. Your
camper will earn at least one proficiency badge as well as a fun
patch.
How do I know what activities my camper will
participate in?
You can discuss with her different things she would like to do,
however, we allow them to completely choose their schedule.
My camper would like to participate in horseback
riding, is there anything specific she needs to know?
Whether you are attending Ranch Camp or Traditional Camp,
any girl who participates in a horseback riding activity while at
camp is required to wear long pants with smooth soled boots
or shoes that have a heel. Riding helmets are a requirement
and will be supplied by Girl Scouts. If you camper has her own
riding helmet, it must be ASTM (American Society of Testing
and Materials) and SEI (Safety Equipment Institute) certified.
I would like to sign up my camper for horseback riding,
when will she have the opportunity to do this?
One of her two daily free choice times on her schedule will be
dedicated to horseback riding..
What if the weather isn’t cooperating when my camper
is scheduled to go horseback riding?
If there is inclement weather or extreme heat, we attempt
to reschedule your camper for another day. However, if the
weather hasn’t cooperated, we will still teach her equine
safety, a grooming session and get an “up close” opportunity
with the horses. Refunds will not be issued.
Last year, transportation was offered. Is it offered this
year?
Unfortunately, due to low participation rates last year,
transportation is not being offered this year.
What will my daughter need to bring to camp?
After registering for camp, you will be mailed a detailed
packing list in the camp confirmation packet. The
confirmation packet also includes pick up and drop off times,
FAQ’s, Trading Post information, wildlife, and more.
What can we expect to find in the Trading Post?
We provide various items such as: hoody’s, camp T-shirt,
pens, journals, stuffed animals and other material items. We
do not sell food or beverages at our trading post. Items often
vary in price from $1-$40. Upon your check in, you can also go
to the trading post and check in her money or purchase items
that day. We accept cash and checks. Unfortunately at this
time, we do not accept credit cards.

My child has special needs, how will she be
accommodated?
Our inclusive environment helps girls of all abilities live, play
and learn in a non-competitive environment. If your child
requires a special diet, special health care or has a mental or
emotional disability or other condition, you should contact the
Outdoor Program Manager prior to registering your camper. At
that time, you can discuss the nature of your campers needs.
It will then be determined if the camp can provide support,
supervision and necessary accommodations for your camper
to have a safe and fulfilling camping experience. Handicapped
accessible living areas are available.
Registration Questions
When can we register?
Registration for 2012 Sleep Away Camp opens March 1,
2012. Registrations received before the opening date will be
processed as if they were received on March 1, 2012.
Where do I send the form?

Can my camper attend with a buddy?
Yes! Your camper can request another camper as a buddy.
On the form, you will find the buddy request space. Please
provide her name. Make sure her buddy writes your camper’s
name as well. Buddies must be participating in Traditional
Camp or Ranch Camp together. Buddy requests must also
be in the same grade level. Multiple buddies cannot be
guaranteed placement together. A buddy request must be
mutual or the request will not be honored.
If I am signing my camper up for multiple weeks, can
she stay over on the weekends?
Unfortunately, she cannot. We have different programs and
trainings that overlap during the weekends.
Can my child still go to camp even though she is not a
registered Girl Scout?
Yes! Girl Scout camp is for all girls! For non-Girl Scouts there is
an additional $12 non-refundable fee which must be included
with the deposit.
When is the balance for our Sleep Away Camp fee due?
The balance is due June 1, 2012. All campers registering after
June 1, 2012 must pay in full.
Is financial assistance available?
Yes! Financial assistance (camperships) is available for girls
registered with Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania who
demonstrate the need for financial assistance. Donations
from various sources help support the campership fund.
A financial assistance form must be submitted with your
camper’s registration. Applicants will be notified as to whether
or not they qualify for financial assistance and will be expected
to pay any balance due by June 1, 2012.
Confirmation Questions
How and when will we know if we are officially
registered for camp?
Confirmations, along with your state of balance will be sent
approximately three weeks after your registration is received.
What will the confirmation packet contain?
The confirmation packet will contain information regarding
packing lists, drop off and pick up times, wildlife, trading post,
check in and checkout procedures, kapers, food lodging,
home sickness, behaviors and expectations, camp staff,
general questions, directions to camp and more! You will also
receive forms that must be filled out and brought with you to
camp. Please do not mail in the forms to the Harrisburg office.
Cancellations and Refunds Questions
Are deposits transferrable?
Deposits may be transferred to a different week for the same
girl. Deposits are not transferrable between girls.
Are refunds given?
A full refund, less the $50 non-refundable deposit, will be
processed upon written request if:
• the request is made three weeks prior to the start of
camp
• cancellation due to illness and a physician’s
statement of inability to participate is submitted
within two weeks of the scheduled attendance
• cancellation is due to serious illness or death in the
family.
Refunds will NOT be issued for no-shows.

Alaska
Participate in outdoor activities including swimming in nearby
lakes. “Alaska” crafts, snacks and activities will be part of
camp. A two-day camp is available for Daisies/Brownies.
Juniors stay one overnight, while Cadettes stay two. Bus
transportation is available. Girls attending a four-day camp will
earn an age-appropriate Try-it or badge.

Digging Through the Past
Archeology, History, and Dinosaurs
Campers will spend the week digging into Girl Scout history
and finding fossils and dinosaurs along the way. Campers
will participate in themed activities, crafts, and water fun!
Transportation will be provided within the Fairfield and
Gettysburg School Districts.

African Safari
