Student Life St. Francis High School Teacher Crowned National Cherry Queen Congratulations to Miss Maria LaCross, who was crowned the 2010 National Cherry Queen on July 9th. Miss LaCross was hired in May to be part of the St. Francis English Department. She is a 2004 Glen Lake High School graduate and graduated from Michigan State in 2008. She has previously taught in Dubai at the American Academy for Girls. Royalty runs in the family, as Miss LaCross’ aunt is GTACS Admissions Director, Cindy (Pleva) Weber, who was the 1987 National Cherry Queen! National Cherry Queen, Maria LaCross, pictured with the St. Francis Marching Band in the Cherry Royale Parade. Holy Angels Float Wins Judges’ Favorite! The Holy Angels float depicting Frankenmuth won “Judges’ Favorite” in the Junior Royale Children’s Parade! Each local school was invited to build a float based on the parade theme of “Awesomely Awesome Cities of Michigan.” Pictured above is the float and Holy Angels Princess, Jane Fitzpatrick and Prince, Gavin Nickodemus. STATE CHAMPIONS During the past year, St. Francis High School celebrated state champions in the following sports: The #3 varsity doubles tennis team of Stephen Siddall and Keith Gingras won the state championship in fall 2010. This is a second year in a row that St. Francis has had state champions in boys tennis. Bishop Bernard Hebda was the Grand Marshal of the Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade in March 2010. He was led by the St. Francis Marching Band. SEAS Student named Michigan Geographic Bee Semifinalist The National Geographic Society has named St. Elizabeth Ann Seton 8th grader Brian Will as a semifinalist in the 2011 Michigan Geographic Bee, sponsored by Google and Plum Creek. Brian was the school finalist which qualified him to take a test to submit to the National Geographic Society. The students with the top 100 scores are invited to compete at the state level. The Michigan Geographic Bee will be at Western Michigan University in April. The state winner will earn a trip to Washington, D.C. to represent the state of Michigan in the national finals to be held in May. Best wishes to Brian! SF Junior, Isaiah Schaub, won the State Championship in wrestling for the 130 lbs. weight class in March 2011 at the Palace in Auburn Hills. He is only the second state wrestling champion in the history of St. Francis. 10 www.gtacs.org
DID YOU KNOW? More than a Football Game September 11, 2010, brought two special groups together at Thirlby Field for more than a football game. The St. Francis Gladiators battled the Elk Rapids Elks and played for a common cause. Both teams used the venue to honor local law enforcement, EMS, fire fighters, and military in observance of the anniversary of 9/11 in a special pre-game ceremony. This was also the date of the Annual Breast Cancer Bowl where both teams donned pink socks with their uniforms to raise money for the local Munson Breast Cancer Fund with a pink balloon release at the end of the game. Below are excerpts from two thank yous received: For a third year, the St. Francis Varsity Football team and others in the GTACS community came out in force to put on the Breast Cancer Bowl. As we heard and understand – it was about more than a game. In one way or another, cancer has touched everyone at Thirlby Field that night. For the survivors and the families of those who have lost a loved one – it speaks volumes that the families of GTACS are behind them in their fight to raise awareness and funds for those suffering through this devastating disease. Through the support of our community in partnerships with our friends at GTACS, Munson Healthcare will continue to make sure that everyone will have access to mammograms whether they can afford them or not, because early detection remains the best way to survive breast cancer. We also will ensure that those who are fighting their battle can do so with a bit more dignity in the way of assistance with bills that are going unpaid due to financial burdens that often exist in a medical crisis. We will also be there to support patients through counseling programs and educational programs so victims of the disease don’t face this burden alone. All of us at Munson Healthcare Regional Foundation are so very grateful to our generous partners at GTACS for all the support you give to this very worthwhile cause! It has been through the support of people like you that so many strides have been made to progress detection, treatment and support and in time, a cure will be found. When you are a police officer, you do not do it for recognition but it is always nice to receive some now and then. Richards/ Michigan Department of State Police The SF Girls Volleyball Team jumped in to “spike” the fight against cancer with their “Dig Pink” event which raised $1,500 for Munson Women’s Cancer Fund. Two SF art students have won the prestigious honor of being juried into the NMC High School Art Competition. Congratulations to Paul Piechocki and Troy Clark. Four photography students from St. Francis that were juried into the local High School Photography Contest were featured at the opening reception in March at Building 50. Congratulations to Lance Masserant, Justin Olm, CJ Zamarron, and Jamie Marsh. SAVE THE DATE! This year’s regional competition had the most number of teams from GTACS in the history of the Odyssey of the Mind program.
