“KEEP BELIEVING!”
Hoops for a Cause
The Annual Katie Heintz Memorial Basketball Tournament
was held on Saturday, March 12, 2011, to raise money
for the Pediatric Oncology Unit at Munson Hospital to
help families receive services locally.
A big crowd of students, families, and friends flooded the gym for this annual event to honor
Katie Heintz who lost her battle to leukemia in August 2005. The event began with a spaghetti dinner,
followed by student and staff basketball games. The finale of the evening was the “All Star” game of
GTACS staff coached by Fox Motors’ Jon Cueter vs. students coached by Bill Marsh Automotive
Group’s Bill Marsh, Jr. In the end, the staff prevailed, but all teams were winners as they worked for a
great cause. Katie taught us all to “Keep Believing!” The event was organized and staffed by: K-Kids,
Builders Club, and Key Club, all Kiwanis school-sponsored clubs.
“Faith in action is love, and love in action is service.
By transforming that faith into living acts of love, we put
ourselves in contact with God Himself, with Jesus our Lord.”
Mission Trip
to Africa
St. Francis High School
will continue with their
10th annual international
mission experience this
summer, but with a new venue. For the past
seven years, St. Francis students traveled to
Steertown, Jamaica. This year, twenty St.
Francis students, nine adults, and Fr. Robbie
Deka will be traveling to Lusaka, Zambia, to
work with Dominican Sisters of the Kasisi
Children’s Orphanage. This is a unique
experience not only because of the distance
involved, but also because Fr. Robbie grew
up in Lusaka, and the group will be able to
meet his parents and family. The St. Francis
group will be working with the Sisters and
the residents at the orphanage by servicing
the convent, working directly with the
schools, and discovering how the Catholic
faith is at the center of what the children
experience in their lives.
Ellen Kendziorski, a senior at
St. Francis, stated that “going to
Zambia is going to be a great way
to experience an entirely different
culture, but with the same faith.
I am excited to see even a small part
of their way of life and I know that
it will impact me forever.”
4th graders at Immaculate
Conception celebrate All
Saints Day by researching
and dressing up as their
favorite saint. They start
the day by attending
Mass together for the
Feast of All Saints
Day and process in
depicting their
chosen saint.
The trip will be about 15 days long, and
the students are only allowed to bring one
carry-on bag. This bag may only contain five
changes of clothes and the minimum of
toiletries. If you are interested in making a
donation to help with the expenses of this
trip or to assist the building projects,
please contact Wayne Mueller at
wmueller@gtacs.org or call the Development
Office at (231) 946-8147. But more
importantly, all who are traveling ask for your
prayers that they may spread the Good News.
