BOYS CHOIR (Z7CB1-Z7CB2)
GIRLS CHOIR (Z7CG1-Z7CG2)
2 Semesters
Students will develop and improve their skills in singing and reading music. Vocal
production and performance skills will be learned by singing music from a variety
of styles and cultures. Students will learn to use principles and elements of music
and increase their knowledge of the expressive and technical elements of music
through singing. Students will perform in winter and spring concerts. The biggest
event of the year is the Choral Clinic in March when a clinician is invited to work
with the choirs for two days. The event culminates in a concert in which all the
SJHS choirs perform. The 7th grade choirs also tour the elementary schools in
December and May.
ORCHESTRA (Z7O1-Z7O2)
2 Semesters
Students will work towards a performance on their instrument to demonstrate
fundamental technique and understanding of standard notation symbols. Students
will also work on expressive elements of communication in music. Concepts
included are: correct posture, hand positions and bow stroke; an understanding
of basic rhythm, quarter and eight note patterns, and keeping a steady beat;
intonation, finger placement on the strings and finger patterns; knowing the names
of the notes you are playing including flats, sharps, and naturals; understanding
of key signatures and time signatures; and playing with good tone. Students will
perform in a judged, Solo/Ensemble Contest. Students will perform in winter and
spring concerts and other events throughout the school year.
Equipment: Students will need an instrument in good working order with the
appropriate accessories (Rosin, Bow, Shoulder Rest/Rock Stop, Etc.)
BAND (Z7B1-Z7B2)
2 Semesters
Prerequisite: Students who register for band in grade 7 should be currently
playing in elementary school band. It is recommended that a student who wants
to play in band but has not been in elementary band should take private lessons
first. There will then be an audition in mid-August.
In 7th grade band, students continue to build on performance skills that were
introduced in elementary band. Students will play a wide variety of musical
styles. Students will demonstrate fundamental skills on their instrument, develop
thoughtful practice habits, and participate cooperatively and effectively in groups.
Students will use musical principles to perform music artistically. Students will
perform in winter and spring concerts and the annual “Band Clinic” in March
which features a professional musician from the Twin Cities area who performs
with all the SJHS Concert Bands.
Equipment: Students are expected to provide their own instrument.
Percussionists will receive a mailing during the summer regarding sticks and
mallets. Students are expected to provide their own reeds, valve oil, cork
grease and other daily performance supplies, a three-ring binder for music and
handouts, and a pencil.
http://sjhs.stillwater.k12.mn.us
ART 7 (A701)
1 Semester
At the entry level, students will embrace
many of the mediums such as painting,
collage, pen and ink, printmaking,
drawing, sculpture and clay pottery in
their various projects. They will use
the elements as well as the principles
of art in all their work to prepare them
for advanced art studies. Throughout
the semester students will study several
well-known artists and trends in art
history as preparation for their projects.
FACS 7 (F701)
1 Semester
This course promotes the development
of decision-making and resource
management skills. The focus is to
teach students ways to enhance the
ALTERNATIVE LEARNING CENTER
The St. Croix Valley Intermediate ALC is a junior high program designed for
7th through 9th grade students from both Stillwater Junior High School and
Oak-Land Junior High School. The program offers small classes, individual
attention, alternative approaches to learning, and an opportunity to receive
extra help on academic assignments from their home school.
The curriculum offered is aligned with district curriculum standards. All
students participate in READ 180, a research-based reading intervention
program. The components offered include direct instruction, intensive,
individualized skills practice, independent reading and instructional reading
by use of READ 180 software. All 9th grade students also participate in
physical science. In addition, ALC Skills is an integral part of the school day
and participation is required of all students.
With a smaller class size, students are able to receive more individualized
attention. They work independently and cooperatively in a community-
based environment. Almost all work is completed within the school day.
Grades based on participation and performance are issued and reported
back to the students’ home schools. These grades are included on the
students’ report cards.
The Intermediate ALC program is a half-day program with sessions offered in
