Guilford Board of Education Appoints New Superintendent
The Guilford Board of Education is pleased to announce
the appointment of Paul S. Freeman, Ed.D. as the new
Superintendent of Schools. Currently, Dr. Freeman is
the Superintendent of the Griswold, CT school district.
His tenure with the Guilford Public Schools will begin in
early to mid November 2011.
The goal of the Board of Education was to hire a strong
leader able to build on the district’s sound foundation of
teaching and learning and continue to make the
education program the best it can be. Dr. Freeman
brings 19 years of experience as an assistant principal;
principal; assistant superintendent in East Lyme; and
currently as the superintendent of the Griswold school
system. He began his career as an English teacher in Amity Regional School District.
Dr. Freeman is described by colleagues as committed to the well‐being of the people
in his professional community while effectively advocating for children. He has
demonstrated an understanding of situations, the processes needed to move
forward, and a personal understanding of the stakeholders.
“Dr. Freeman has the skills to maintain and improve upon the progress made by
Guilford’s schools,” said BOE chairman William M. Bloss. “He is intellectually
curious, committed to research‐driven decisions, and has a record of achievement
gained through working together to solve real problems. In short, he is a rising star
in the field of public education. He will in very short order earn the respect of
parents, faculty and staff, students, and all our citizens.”
Dr. Freeman recognizes the challenges school districts face in meeting the demands
of the 21st century and has implemented district initiatives to create positive,
collaborative environments focused on learning and instruction. In addition,
Guilford will benefit from Dr. Freeman’s experience participating in the design and
development of 21 st century school facilities. During his tenure as assistant
principal and principal, a new East Lyme Middle School was constructed and
projects in Griswold were completed.
Dr. Freeman holds a B.A. in English, an M.S. in English Education, and a Sixth Year
Diploma in Educational Leadership from Southern Connecticut State University, and
his doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of Connecticut. Upon
receiving his doctorate he was invited by the faculty to teach in the program. He has
been a conference presenter on a variety of public education topics including:
“What’s in a Schedule,” “The Development of Beginning School Principals,” “Scaling
the Heights of the Flat World,” and “Effective Professional Development.” He has
also published several articles, primarily focusing on middle level education.

Dr. Freeman lives in Killingworth with his wife, Bini, and four sons between the ages
of 7 and 14, all active in sports, community and volunteer activities. In his leisure
time, Dr. Freeman enjoys traveling, mountain biking, and reading.
“In my career I have learned about the importance of relationships in leadership;
and I have learned about commitment to a vision. I look forward to sharing what I
have learned to move an already powerful school district to even greater levels of
success,” Dr. Freeman said.
