Technology Education Students Maurice Staschke and Jerome Schioppo stand proud beside the plyo workout boxes they constructed for the fire department, with support from <strong>Guilford</strong>’s Whipit Crossfit gym Video Production Mr. Ripa’s video production class participated in a video contest sponsored by <strong>Guilford</strong> Savings Bank. The students’ task was to create a public service announcement delivering practical strategies on how to save money for the future. Students worked both in class and after school filming and editing to create a one-minute and thirty second long production. After the films were judged, GHS students took both first and second place. The first place students moved on to the national level and the results will be in mid-March. Physical Education/Health The intramural volleyball season kicks off March 4 th !! This late winter event has taken place at GHS since 1980 and continues to grow each year. An all time high of forty-six coed teams (approximately 12 students per team) have signed up for this season; among the forty-six teams are two faculty teams. The season runs for seven weeks with round robin play in each league and concludes with an elimination tournament leaving one team as the champions who win bragging rights until next season, as well as championship shirts and their team name engraved on the trophy to be displayed in the school’s trophy case in the main lobby. Each team elects 1-2 student captains; providing them with an opportunity for leadership through communicating the schedule to their team, attending informational meetings and refereeing other games. Games are played Monday-Thursday in the GHS gymnasium from 7-9pm. Schedules are located on the Intramural Bulletin Board outside the girl’s locker room. Come by and support your favorite team! Craig Vedrani continues to supervise the SCORE program- this involves about 45 athletes who go up to Melissa Jones to read to the students. Each month the students must prepare the material, organize their time to coincide with the reading class at Jones and then read to the groups. This is an outstanding opportunity for our high school athletes to demonstrate their willingness to assist younger students with the skills of reading. World Language The new semester is always exciting as it provides all of us the opportunity to reflect on what we have accomplished during the first semester and to set goals for the remainder of the year. It is important to understand that second semester grades determine placement for next year. In most courses students must have a semester two average of 75 to continue in the sequence. To qualify for an Honors class, a student must have a semester two average of 87 or better. Latin students will be preparing for State Latin Day in May. If your child is interested, they should contact Ms. Hildahl as there are limited spaces available. They will begin preparing for the academic contests as well as working on projects for other competitions. * World Language Tip for the Month We all learned to speak our own language by listening to our family when we were babies, imitating sounds that we heard and progressing to words and finally to sentences. Listening comprehension is crucial to success in a foreign language. What can you do to help your child increase listening comprehension skills? Spanish students should listen to Spanish language podcasts and/or television stations. Novice language learners (1 st and 2 nd year) students may be intimidated by the fast pace. But have students listen for 5 words that they recognize and write them down. After a few times of successfully hearing 5 words, have them increase to 10. Before long they will be picking up the context. This will also enable them to increase participation in class and improve the quality of their writing. French students can listen to French language podcasts and music CD’s and follow along. They should also watch sub-titled French language films. The subtitles will help them understand what they hear while they are increasing their listening skills. Page 7
