What is the bright side to a year that brought such adversity to so many in 

our region? In times of turmoil or uncertainty, coping successfully often 

means taking stock of what is essential in our lives, re-evaluating priorities, 

and finding a renewed sense of gratitude for that which we value most. At 

Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation, that means our relationships with 

the people we serve. 

For over a century, Gundersen Lutheran has been caring for patients, 

families, and communities with a personalized attention that has become 

the hallmark of everything we do. We are the home that people return to with 

the secure knowledge that here, quality healthcare means not only leadingedge 

services, but compassionate care delivered with a human touch. These 

relationships—between medical center and community, between caregivers, 

patients, and families—are the rich soil from which all advancement, success, 

and achievement can take root and grow. 

In this issue of Pathfinders, we share stories that spotlight the importance 

of caring relationships and the fundamental ways they impact the work of 

our Foundation. You’ll read about people’s thoughtful decisions to support 

Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation because our mission is consistent 

with the very things they value most. Each story is different, yet the core 

feeling is remarkably the same: “I am grateful” and “I want to make a 

difference.” 

None of us can know for certain what the coming year will bring. But even as 

the healthcare landscape changes, Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation 

remains firmly rooted in our long tradition of treasuring relationships. We 

know that home is not just a place—it is people.

A Legacy of Love 

Betty Ann MacPhetridge is remembered by her 

husband Don, and many others, as a person who 

always had a smile on her face and a gift for helping 

people. “She turned me into a giving person,” says 

Don. “She’d go without eating to help someone else.” 

In 2005, nearly a year after Betty 

Ann MacPhetridge had passed 

away, her husband Don made a 

surprising discovery. Tucked away 

in the bottom of a drawer where his 

wife collected receipts was a letter 

to Don, from Betty Ann, along with 

a life insurance policy naming him 

as beneficiary. In her letter, Betty 

Ann told Don how she wanted him to 

make gifts to their favorite charities, 

which include Gundersen Lutheran 

Medical Foundation. She also wanted 

him to have some fun money to enjoy 

at their favorite casino. It’s a perfect 

example of the generosity and sense 

of humor that defined Betty Ann 

MacPhetridge in life. “She was a 

giving person always,” says the man 

who was married to her for nearly 

50 years. “And she turned me into a 

giving person, too.” 

Don MacPhetridge cherishes the 

memories of Betty Ann’s giving 

ways. How she lent him a dime when 

they ran out of gas on their first date. 

How she sent a monthly check to 

help support a woman whose children 

refused to. “If someone needed 

money, she would give it to them,” 

says Don. “She’d go without eating to 

help someone else. There were some 

weeks when she would come home 

on pay day without a paycheck left. 

That’s how she was.”

Together, they were strong 

supporters of the Shriners, of which 

Don is a longtime member. For years 

they traveled throughout the United 

States and Canada where Don 

performed with the Zor Oriental 

Band, raising funds for Shriners 

Hospitals for Crippled Children 

and Shriners Burn Centers of North 

America. By 1994, Don and Betty 

Ann’s charitable interests included 


Foundation. “Betty Ann saw it as 

a good organization that helps a 

lot of people,” recalls Don. “We’d 

always been givers to different 

organizations, but she thought more 

of the Foundation than anything.” 

The MacPhetridge’s high regard 

for the work of the Foundation is 

evident in their remarkable giving 

history. Over the course of nearly 15 

years, they made over 200 separate 

gifts—approximately 13 each 

year, or a gift a month. Many have 

been in the form of memorials for 

friends and loved ones, or in honor 

of a special physician or caregiver. 

Their annual Heritage gifts were 

frequently designated for a cause 

they cared deeply about: research, 

specifically cancer research; hospice 

care; and the Paula’s Purse fund that 

assists cancer patients. Betty Ann’s 

eight-year battle with breast cancer 

and Don’s own cancer diagnosis 

increased their awareness of the 

disease and their commitment to 

help others fight it by advancing the 

Foundation’s efforts. 

Earlier this year, Don began 

discussions with Robyn Tanke, 

senior director of development, 

regarding a major gift in Betty 

Ann’s memory. He wanted to give 

something back in gratitude to the 

hospice program that had provided 

such extraordinary care at the end of 

Betty Ann’s life. In addition, Don’s 

greatest wish was to see Betty Ann 

recognized as the person who had 

inspired him, and so many others, 

through her lifelong gift for giving. 

With Don’s input, Robyn developed 

the framework for a charitable gift 

annuity (CGA) that would allow 

him to transfer stock as a gift to 


Foundation, and receive in return 

a fixed annual payment for the 

remainder of his life. 

The CGA plan appealed to Don 

for a number of reasons. The rate of 

return was far more favorable than 

current interest rates on CDs, and 

receiving a guaranteed life income 

was also attractive. But by far the 

deciding factor was knowing how 

much it would have pleased Betty 

Ann. “I feel great to be honoring 

one of her last requests—and that is 

to continue to help the Foundation. 

If I’m helping somebody, that’s all 

I care about,” says Don. Having 

known Betty Ann personally, 

Robyn agrees that “she would be so 

delighted with what Don has done. 

She was as exuberant as she was 

giving. It really is a win-win.” 

Helping and comforting others 

was Betty Ann MacPhetridge’s 

essential nature. Don smiles at a 

memory of her from the day before 

she passed away when, despite 

being in pain and confined to a 

wheelchair, she took such joy in 

playing Christmas songs on the 

piano at the nursing home to lift 

everyone’s holiday spirits. That was 

his Betty Ann.

A Peaceful Death, 

A Grateful Daughter 

Marilee Hemstock-Swenson 

has maintained strong 

ties to La Crosse, even 

though she now makes her home 

in Mantorville, Minnesota. She’s 

received medical care in nearby 

Rochester, and also in Arizona where 

she spends her winters. Nowhere 

has she seen the friendly atmosphere 

she has experienced at Gundersen 

Lutheran. “I still feel more at home 

here,” Marilee admits. Her admiration 

for the quality of care provided 

at Gundersen Lutheran took on a new 

dimension this year, during the final 

illness of her 91-year old mother, 

Midge (Mildred) Hemstock. 

“Mother was very ready to die. 

She wanted to be with her Lord, and 

my dad,” says Marilee. “She just 

wanted to be comfortable, and that’s 

what we wanted, too, as the family.” 

After being admitted to the hospital 

on May 1, Marilee’s mother entered 

the inpatient hospice program where 

she received palliative care until her 

death 11 days later. 

“I can’t say enough about 

how they took care of 

her,” says Midge’s very 

grateful daughter. “As 

a family member, it 

was just wonderful.” 

She still refers to 

her mother’s hospice caregivers as 

“angels” who showed such love, 

respect, and empathy throughout 

those final days. “I had never seen 

care like that,” says Marilee. “I know 

that Mother did not suffer. She had 

the very peaceful death she wanted.” 

Midge Hemstock had even 

planned her own funeral. She wrote 

the obituary, chose her pallbearers, 

specified her favorite songs and 

Bible verses, and selected who was 

to provide the lunch service. She also 

requested that memorials be directed 

to several of her favorite charities, 

including Gundersen Lutheran 

Medical Foundation. Midge and her 

late husband, Cecil, were longtime 

supporters of the Foundation, dating 

back to their life membership as 

Founder’s Level donors to what was 

then Gundersen Medical Foundation. 

As members of the Legacy Society, 

they had established a Charitable 

Remainder Trust that included the 

Foundation as a beneficiary. Marilee 

plans to continue giving in her 

mother’s memory. “I have been a 

supporter of the Foundation for years. 

If someone passed in La Crosse who 

I knew, my memorials almost always 

went to Gundersen Lutheran,” she 

explains. “I plan to do more now, not 

just because Mother won’t be there to 

continue, but because of this hospice 

experience. They cared for me as 

much as Mother, and when she took 

her last breath, the same nurse who 

admitted her was there to cry along 

with me. Each member of that team 

was just wonderful.” 

Gundersen Lutheran Hospice 

provides care for approximately 

65 patients every month—patients 

diagnosed with terminal conditions 

who receive their hospice care in 

either home or inpatient settings. Our 

dear friend Midge Hemstock would 

be proud to know that memorials 

made in her honor, directed to the 

Foundation’s Hospice Fund, will be 

helping these patients and their loved 

ones even beyond her lifetime. 

How we help others depart this 

life helps define our lives. In 2008 to 

date, nearly 300 donors have made 

gifts to support hospice funding 

through Gundersen Lutheran Medical 

Foundation. Grants awarded for the 

year are expected to surpass $59,000, 

and are used for such things as staff 

development, equipment, and services 

for hospice patients and their families.

Each August, Gundersen Lutheran 

Medical Foundation’s Department 

of Research proudly hosts a series 

of presentations by the outstanding 

college students participating in 

the A.C.V. Elston, III, MD Summer 

Research Fellows Program. 

These competitive positions 

allow students to gain firsthand 

knowledge through active 

involvement in an ongoing research 

project over the course of a 13-week 

fellowship. Working alongside 

Gundersen Lutheran mentors from a 

wide range of departments, summer 

fellows contribute to the body of 

science and medical information 

that improves clinical practice. 

The Foundation is grateful to

Provide the 

Human Touch in 

Cancer Care 

A diagnosis of cancer brings many 

types of challenges to a patient. At 

the outset, the physical effects of the 

disease and treatment receive the 

most immediate focus in the effort to 

cure the cancer. However, treating the 

whole person means recognizing and 

addressing the emotional and social 

issues cancer patients frequently 

encounter and which significantly 

affect their well-being. 

In late 2007, Gundersen Lutheran’s 

Center for Cancer and Blood 

Disorders, in collaboration with 


Foundation, formed a Patient and 

Family Advisory Council (PFAC) 

to act as a liaison in communicating 

the concerns, issues, and needs 

of cancer patients and their caregivers 

to the organization. In this 

issue of Pathfinders, we asked two 

PFAC members, Sue Eber and Bill 

Medland, to share their perspective 

on the importance of relationships in 

their journey with cancer. 

Sue 

Sue Eber’s 

relationship with 

Gundersen Lutheran goes back 

many years. She worked here as an 

emergency room nurse for 22 years. 

She and her husband, Dave, are 

strong and active supporters of the 

Foundation. “Gundersen Lutheran 

has been like home for me,” says 

Sue. When she was diagnosed with 

lung cancer in December of 2005, 

she knew the quality of care she 

would receive, and also the care she 

would need to help her cope. “This 

isn’t just my disease. It belongs to 

everybody—my friends, family, 

everybody,” says Sue. 

She was eager to reach out to other 

cancer patients, and learned that no 

general cancer support group existed 

at that time. It became her mission to 

change that. When Sue brought her 

idea to Kelly Barton, MPH, CASHA, 

administrative director for Gundersen 

Lutheran’s Center for Cancer & 

Blood Disorders, it was received 

with enthusiasm. “I can’t even 

begin to tell people how responsive 

Gundersen Lutheran is to the needs 

of the patients, how thoughtfully 

they listen and are willing to try 

new things.” After careful planning, 

the General Cancer Support Group 

had its first meeting in April 2007, 

and now numbers approximately 

28 participants, both patients and 

caregivers, at their monthly meetings. 

“Most of us have faced the same 

thing, no matter what kind of cancer 

you have,” says Sue. “The closeness 

that has developed is just amazing.”

“I am alive today because of the advances 

made over the past ten years.”

passion for raising awareness about 

lung cancer. “Taking positive action 

is my way of dealing with it,” she 

says. “You develop the ways you 

deal with crises by going through a 

few crises. I just want to be able to 

do something so that other people 

coming down the line aren’t going 

to have to go through such terrible 

things in the future.”

In the summer of 

2006, shortly after 

retiring as the longest serving 

president in the history of Viterbo 

University, Dr. William J. Medland 

was speaking with his longtime 

friend, Mrs. Marjorie Reinhart. He 

mentioned the severe pain that had 

returned with his cancer, and she 

urged him to consult with Gundersen 

Lutheran about a new, highly 

advanced cancer treatment system 

known as stereotactic radiotherapy 

(SRT.) Acquisition of the state-ofthe-art 

equipment had been made 

possible by a major gift from Mrs. 

Reinhart, and she was aware that 

numerous patients in the community 

had been treated successfully. 

Bill followed her advice. Just a few 

weeks later, he received the first of 

three SRT treatments by radiation 

oncologist Patrick Conway, MD. 

“And it worked,” recalls Bill. “By the 

second treatment I was feeling much 

better, and by the third treatment 

the pain in that area was gone.” As 

a ten-year veteran of the cancer war 

(his first surgery was in 1998), Bill 

is a strong believer in the power of 

faith, and the power of research. 

“Quite honestly, what is taking 

place today in the area of cancer 

treatments, cancer medications, and 

cancer detection was not available 

to me 10 years ago.” Another 

change he has seen is the physician’s 

perspective, specifically “the greater 

realization that cancer affects not 

only the individual, but their spouse, 

their family and their friends.” 

Bill and his wife, Donna, have 

been private about their respective 

battles with cancer, but when recently 

asked about serving on the PFAC, 

Bill willingly volunteered. As he 

says, “I’m ready to help out anywhere 

when it comes to cancer.” Promoting 

improved relationships between 

patients, families, and staff is a key 

part of the PFAC’s work.

co-facilitator of the Cancer Center’s 

Patient and Family Advisory Council. 

Activities of the PFAC, as well as the 

General Cancer Support Group, the 

Lung Cancer Support Group, and 

the Lung Cancer Awareness Project 

are supported in part by Foundation 

grants with the goal of empowering 

and enhancing the quality of life for 

Gundersen Lutheran cancer patients 

and their caregivers.

Shaping the Future of Healthcare 

through Philanthropy 

In 2005, Tommy G. Thompson, former Governor of 

Wisconsin, former U.S. Secretary of Health and Human 

Services, and current President of Logistics Health, Inc., 

joined the Board of Directors of Gundersen Lutheran 

Medical Foundation. Having dedicated his professional life 

to public service, Gov. Thompson is a passionate advocate 

for the health and welfare of all Americans, particularly 

the Gundersen Lutheran service region he calls home. His 

familiarity with successful healthcare models and best 

practices from around the country gives him a unique 

perspective on the role of innovation in finding creative 

solutions to the healthcare challenges of the future. On a 

tour of Gundersen Lutheran this fall, Gov. Thompson shared 

his views on the critical role of philanthropy in healthcare. 

“Philanthropy is more important today than ever 

before. All we have to do is look at the financial problems 

of our federal and state governments to realize there will 

not be as many taxpayer dollars available for healthcare 

in the future. How is that void going to be filled? It’s 

going to be filled by the great generosity of individual 

benefactors like Jon and Betty Kabara. It’s going to be 

filled by other people of the same abilities, who choose 

to contribute to the Gundersen Lutherans of our world 

so they may continue healing, teaching, and serving the 

greater good. That, to me, is the definition of a compassionate 

society. 

“Gundersen Lutheran is a philanthropic role model 

in and of itself, providing thousands of dollars of 

uncompensated care to people who need it. The 

Foundation does a tremendous amount of societal good 

every single day through medical education and research, 

and reaching out to help people who need it. If we want 

a more perfect world, it is going to be the innovations 

in science and healthcare that will lead the way. In that 

sense, Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation is a 

beacon of hope showing us the way to a better future.” 

Major Gift Establishes 

New Cancer Research 

Institute at Gundersen 

Lutheran 

On the day of the news conference announcing the 

creation of the Dr. Jon and Betty Kabara Cancer 

Research Institute at Gundersen Lutheran, Jon 

Kabara spoke of losing his grandfather to cancer when he 

was only seven years old. “This sounds corny, but I had 

a conversation with God and told him ‘when I grow up, I 

hope I can find a cure.’ But I also said: If you can’t wait for 

me to grow up, it’s okay if somebody else finds it.” 

Dr. Kabara dedicated his entire adult life to science 

and research. After graduating with his bachelor’s degree 

in chemistry from Saint Mary’s University in Winona, 

Minn., he went on to receive his master’s degree in organic 

chemistry and doctorate degree in pharmacology at the 

University of Miami, Miami, Fla., and the University of 

Chicago respectively. He has been a professor at Michigan 

State University for 20 years, and an investigator in 

biochemistry for the past 50 years, all of it in lipid research. 

Both he and his wife Betty have seen the terrible toll 

cancer has taken in the lives of those they loved. For this 

reason, they became passionately committed to sponsoring 

research directed toward specific aspects of nutrition and 

lipids in cancer biology in the hopes of uncovering new 

pathways to its cause and cure. Having funded an earlier 

research project for the Foundation under the direction of 

Dr. Steve Callister, the Kabaras already had an enormous 

respect for the work being done by the medical staff and 

researchers at Gundersen Lutheran. In February, they made 

a $1,000,000 gift to Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation 

with the intent to create the Cancer Research Institute 

that now bears their name. 

“We were surprised to learn the Kabaras were making 

this extraordinary gift because they are not from the 

area and had not received their care here,” said Mark V. 

Connelly, MD, FACS, chairman of Gundersen Lutheran 

Medical Foundation. “It’s a testament to our organization 

that they recognized the strong tradition of research at 

Gundersen Lutheran. Their generous gift and their remarkable 

commitment to finding a cure for cancer will take our

The Kabaras look forward to the work of the Institute 

getting underway with the arrival of renowned cancer 

researcher Dr. Carl Simon Shelley (see inset.) After a 

lifetime dedicated to finding a cure, Jon Kabara will be 

more than happy to make good on his childhood promise. 

As Betty Kabara says, “We’re at the point in our lives 

where we feel time is running out, so we’ve got to get 

somebody else to carry on.” By establishing the Cancer 

Research Institute at Gundersen Lutheran, the Kabaras 

are symbolically passing the torch and entrusting their 

dream to a world-class medical center equally dedicated 

to their cause. 

The Kabaras 

had not received 

medical care at 

Gundersen Lutheran prior to making their generous gift 

to the Foundation. That changed in June of 2008, when 

Dr. Kabara was treated for a serious heart condition that 

threatened his life. Told by his regular cardiologists that 

he had only six months to live, the Kabaras sought a 

second opinion from Umang Patel, MD, and Julio Bird, MD, 

at the Gundersen Lutheran Heart Institute. Dr. Kabara 

now credits both of his physicians—and every caregiver 

he has encountered at Gundersen Lutheran—with 

giving him a second life. “It is such an incredible place,” 

observes Betty Kabara. “The service, the care, the way 

we were treated before, during and after Jon’s surgery… 

we just couldn’t get over it. If we were younger, we 

would move here for this hospital.” Jon Kabara is equally 

grateful. “As patients, the greatest thing we received

University of Paris, France, and has participated in 

numerous national and international collaborations. 

William A. Agger, MD, Director of Research for 

Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation, couldn’t be 

more pleased that the hiring of the organization’s first 

dedicated senior scientist in the area of cancer research 

coincided so closely with the Kabara’s initiative to 

fund a Cancer Research Institute. “It’s just perfect 

timing,” says Dr. Agger. Up to this point, the majority 

of research conducted at Gundersen Lutheran has 

been clinically based—meaning a doctor or nurse 

chooses to investigate the cause of something they 

see in their practice by looking at medical records or 

conducting tests. The research Dr. Shelley conducts 

is basic research, which is research at the molecular 

or microbiology level. “Our program has grown to the 

point where this is possible,” notes Dr. Agger, “thanks 

to the foresight of those who came before us.”

What Do Crises 

Mean for Giving?

Without question, the 

alarming economic 

events of “Black October” 

increased the anxiety of all Americans 

about the security of their financial 

assets. Conventional wisdom suggests 

that when the stock market declines, 

philanthropy follows suit. Historical 

data, however, proves otherwise. In 

a study recently published by the 

national Association of Fundraising 

Professionals, giving trends were 

tracked over a 27-year period, from 

1980-2007. The data revealed a consistent 

increase in philanthropy from one 

year to the next, except for one year of 

modest drop off in 1987. Even in the 

aftermath of major crises, including 

war, terrorism, and economic downturns, 

the American commitment 

to philanthropy remains strong and 

resilient. 

This year, Gundersen Lutheran 

Medical Foundation launched an 

innovative pilot program to encourage 

philanthropy within our region. We 

have engaged the firm of Thompson 

& Associates (ceplan.com) to consult 

directly with qualified couples and 

individuals about their philanthropic 

priorities. The process is completely 

donor-focused, completely 

confidential, completely customized, 

and completely non-binding. After 

exploring each participant’s specific 

interests and desires, Thompson 

& Associates crafts a plan which 

reflects those priorities and becomes 

a framework from which the 

participant’s personal advisors can 

develop the formal documents. 

Participants are under no obligation 

to follow through on the plan, 

nor to include any provisions for 

our Foundation. We have no influence 

on the process, and receive no 

summary reporting from Thompson 

& Associates after the consultation 

has concluded. What we do hope, 

in the long run, is that this type of 

planning assistance from a highlyregarded 

third party will encourage 

more philanthropy in our community 

overall. We hope that potential donors 

will see this unique experience as an 

opportunity to express their dreams 

for the causes close to their heart, and 

discover new ways in which it may 

be possible to achieve them through 

charitable estate planning. Above all, 

we hope to reinforce what history 

shows us to be true: Good planning 

trumps a poor economy. 

Relationships Are

often feel the best part of my 

work with Gundersen Lutheran 

Medical Foundation is serving as 

a facilitator, helping donors give voice 

to their private charitable intentions. 

Many times these donors are lifelong 


members of the community, familiar 

with Gundersen Lutheran through 

generations of experience. Others are 

like my new friend Charles Harrison, 

who was unfamiliar with the work of 

the Foundation until earlier this year. 

And in these few short months, what 

a friend he has become! 

I received a call from Mr. Harrison 

out of the blue last February. He 

was scheduled for hip replacement 

surgery at Gundersen Lutheran 

and was putting his estate in 

order. Having decided to leave the 

remainder of his assets to support 

cancer research through the Foundation, 

he wanted assistance with the 

appropriate wording for his will. And 

that is how I came to know more 

about Charles Harrison: How he had 

lost his beloved wife to lung cancer 

three years ago. How they had lived 

in various parts of the country and 

decided to retire here years ago for 

the hunting, fishing, and excellent 

healthcare. How he had received 

all his medical care at Gundersen 

Lutheran and had such high regard 

for all his physicians and caregivers. 

Since Charles’s successful surgery, 

his relationship with the Foundation 

has simply blossomed. He has met 

other members of the Legacy Society 

who share his philanthropic interests. 

He’s learned more about our work in 

the areas of medical education and 

research. He is deriving so much joy 

from his involvement that he’s taken 

his giving a step further. This fall, he 

completed a charitable gift annuity 

that allows him to see results from his 

generosity now, while he is still here 

to enjoy it in full measure. 

As we sat over coffee at his 

kitchen table, finalizing the 

paperwork for his gift, Charles 

Harrison observed that like many 

people his age, he is constantly 

receiving annuity solicitations. “But 

I bet none of those people would sit 

down and have a cup of coffee with 

me,” he said. And to me, that simple 

observation illustrates everything 

our Foundation is about. Caring 

relationships, with caring people. 

United by a 

Common Thread

A skillful diagnostic expert. The 

common thread that unites them? 


Foundation, and our commitment to 

enhance and support the health of our 

communities. 

The four individuals I’m referring 

to share a relationship to a common 

cause: childhood literacy. The late 

Dr. Adolf Gundersen was a visionary 

in this area, an early and visible 

advocate for the role of medical 

providers in promoting reading 

skills. The late Esther Dykstra was 

a generous benefactor of many 

children’s issues, and established 

a permanent endowment fund to 

provide ongoing support for programs 

which address pediatric disabilities, 

including reading disabilities. David 

Friedman and his wife, Therese, are 

well-known within the La Crosse 

and surrounding community for their 

involvement in the non-profit Read 

Clinic, which offers tutorial services 

to area students. Debbie Olufs, 

PhD, is the director of Gundersen 

Lutheran’s Comprehensive Child 

Care Center (CCCC), and a pediatric 

education specialist who helps 

children and families struggling with 

learning challenges. 

Foundation grants provide the 

thread linking all their work, their 

legacies, and their intentions. 

Gundersen Lutheran’s Reach 

Out and Read program, which 

purchases books for pediatricians to 

give to parents during their child’s 

regular wellness visits, received 

grant funding again this year for the 

La Crosse and Onalaska campus 

programs. An additional grant 

provides for program expansion to 

the new health and wellness center 

at Ashley Furniture in Arcadia. 

In 2008, the Foundation granted 

$15,000 to the Read Clinic to provide 

scholarships for students of families 

unable to pay for tutoring sessions. A 

Children’s Miracle Network ® grant 

of $30,000 to the CCCC helps offset 

fees for diagnostic services provided 

to indigent families. 

Relationships like these—fostered 

by the Foundation, made possible 

by the generous support of our 

donors—often feel like “six degrees 

of separation” that have yet to play 

out. Isn’t it inspiring to think of the 

continuing domino effect, as future 

lives are changed for the better as a 

result of your charitable investment?

Community Embraces Steppin’ Out in Pink 

The parade of pink surrounding 

Gundersen Lutheran’s La Crosse 

campus on Saturday, September 6, 

was a sight to behold. An estimated 

3,700 walkers of all ages stepped 

out with family and friends for the 

third annual Steppin’ Out in Pink 

walk in support of breast cancer 

research at the Norma J. Vinger 

Center for Breast Care. 

By any measure, the event was 

a phenomenal success. The spirit 

of the community could be seen 

in the record-breaking participation—an 

increase of 500 walkers 

over 2007—and by raising an estimated 

$260,000 for the cause. 

Proceeds from Steppin’ Out in 

Pink are designated for Gundersen 

Lutheran Medical Foundation’s 

Norman L. Gillette, Jr. Cancer 

Research Fellowship endowment. 

Thanks to its exemplary interdisciplinary 

approach, Gundersen 

Lutheran ranks among the nation’s 

leaders for best practices and 

outcomes in the treatment of 

breast cancer. Survivors were a 

major presence at this year’s event, 

many walking with family members 

sporting special team shirts or signs 

in support of their loved one. 

Event co-chairperson Patty 

Brown, herself a breast cancer 

survivor, was this year’s recipient 

of the Paula J. Tower Memorial 

Award in recognition of outstanding 

efforts to create a future that 

eliminates the threat of breast 

cancer. Gundersen Lutheran also 

unveiled their new pink mobile 

mammography vehicle that will 

service 19 counties in Wisconsin, 

Minnesota, and Iowa. The mobile 

unit began visiting businesses 

in October to offer screenings 

to employees as well as local 

communities. 


Foundation extends heartfelt 

thanks to the thousands of walkers 

and hundreds of volunteers, 

entertainers, vendors, prize 

contributors and sponsors who 

have embraced this cause and made 

Steppin’ Out in Pink a success for the 

entire community. Seeing so many 

people united by their motivation 

to battle breast cancer is an 

inspiration to all.

made its first unrestricted gift in 

support of medical residencies 

at Gundersen Lutheran Medical 

Foundation. That support has grown 

and continued over 25 years, helping 

to prepare new doctors for practice 

in rural America, both in this 

region and beyond. In recognition 

of this longstanding philanthropic 

relationship, Gundersen Lutheran’s 

resident’s lounge is named for Earl C. 

Swanson, the late executive director 

of the Andersen Foundation. 


Foundation was pleased to host a 

visit from Andersen Foundation 

representatives in late August, which 

provided an opportunity to showcase 

the outstanding achievements 

in healthcare made possible through 

the partnership of two world-class 

organizations. “During their site 

visit, we had a productive discussion 

of issues of common concern, 

and we highlighted our commitment 

to training physicians and 

other health care providers for the 

rural upper Midwest,” says David H. 

Chestnut, MD, Director of Medical 

Education. Nearly three times as 

many doctors are being trained at 

Gundersen Lutheran as in 1983, and 

the percentage of residency graduates 

that remain in the upper Midwest to 

serve patients exceeds 50 percent.

Lutheran graduates may be found in 45 states and 

6 foreign countries. The destinations of 53 are 

unknown. It is of particular interest that of the 

total 866 graduating residents, 463 (53.5%) went 

to practice in Wisconsin, Minnesota, or Iowa. 

Resident Graduation Celebrates Educational Mission 

June is a special time of year 

at Gundersen Lutheran, when we 

graduate another class of medical 

residents. It is an annual reminder 

of the outstanding tradition of our 

medical education program, and 

allows the entire organization to 

reflect on the Foundation’s core 

educational mission. As David H. 

Chestnut, Director of Medical 

Education observes, “Our graduation 

ceremony is a significant family 

event. Not only do the graduates’ 

family members attend, but so do 

staff from across the entire organization 

to express their support. It is a 

day for recognizing the achievements 

of the graduates, and it affirms them 

as they begin the next phase of their 

career.” In 2008, the Foundation 

proudly celebrated the graduation of 

29 residents, and welcomed 31 new 

residents to Gundersen Lutheran.

Each day, Gundersen 

Lutheran’s website (gundluth. 

org) is visited an average of 5,000 

times. Every one of those visits 

is an opportunity for Gundersen 

Lutheran to connect with 

potential patients, employees, 

referring providers, and people 

around the nation and world 

interested in our world-class care 

and programming. At the end of 

October, the launch of a newly 

designed Gundersen Lutheran 

website offered these visitors a 

brand new experience. Some of 

the enhanced features include: 

• New navigation capabilities. 

• Achievements and announcements 

on the home page. 

• Ability to send E-greetings to a 

loved one in the hospital. 

• Ability for patients to register 

and pay for classes online. 

• A resource section for clinicians. 

• Ability to post video and audio 

clips. 

The Foundation section of the 

site is also updated with a fresh 

new look and exciting features.

Tanke Honored as Mrs. Oktoberfest 

La Crosse’s annual Oktoberfest 

celebration included recognition 

for the Foundation’s own Robyn 

Tanke, CFRE, Senior Director of 

Development, who was selected as 

Mrs. Oktoberfest 2008. A lifelong 

resident of the area and a dedicated

New Space Brings Foundation Home 

“We’re very happy to be here,” 

says David Amborn, CFRE, Senior 

Director of Development, referring 

to the handsome space Gundersen 

Lutheran Medical Foundation has 

occupied since April. The new 

office suite, centrally located on the 

third floor between the main clinic 

and hospital, “puts us on one of the 

busiest thoroughfares in the medical 

center. We’re closer to patients 

and staff, right in the main flow 

of Gundersen Lutheran business,” 

says Amborn, who served as project 

manager during the long months of 

planning and construction. 

community volunteer, Tanke assumed 

the role of goodwill ambassador with 

her signature professionalism and 

enthusiasm. “The Mrs. Oktoberfest 

role is really one of the greatest forms 

of recognition a woman can receive 

in our community,” Tanke noted. “To 

be included amongst what I think are 

some of the most respected women 

in our community is an honor.” In 

the coming year, Tanke will be even 

more visible throughout our region, 

promoting community service 

and sharing her personal passion 

for the local arts and humanities. 

Congratulations to Robyn, as well as 

her family: husband Michael, sons 

Ryan and Matthew, daughter-in-law 

Katie and grandson Carson. 

The project was seen as a special 

opportunity to bring together 

personnel working within the 

Foundation’s mission—medical 

education, research, development, 

and administration—into a unified 

space for the first time, with all 

the accompanying synergy and 

efficiencies. Modern amenities 

include enhanced conference space 

and advanced media capabilities, 

including distance education links 

to over 120 sites in the Gundersen 

Lutheran network. The most striking 

design feature incorporates the 

original façade of the 1929 clinic 

entrance into an open atrium concept. 



Progress in Prostate Cancer 

Stereotactic Radiotherapy: 

Increased accuracy, improved cure rates 

Prostate cancer may be treated by any of several 

possible methods: surgery, radioactive seed implants, 

seed implants plus wide-field external radiation, 

and stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT). The doctor and patient 

discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each method, 

taking into account the patient’s age and the stage of the 

cancer. As skills and technologies improve, the 10-year cure 

rates increase steadily for all these methods. 

Stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT) is a relatively new prostate 

cancer treatment at Gundersen Lutheran. It delivers a much 

higher dose of radiation to the prostate gland with much 

greater accuracy than ever before. This technology was first 

used to treat brain tumors, with the advantage of pin-point 

guidance of the radiation beam from several angles, enabling 

delivery of a higher treatment dose with less radiation 

damage to nearby brain tissue. That science has been adapted 

to prostate cancer treatment, with strikingly favorable results. 

For patients whose disease is detected early while confined 

to the prostate gland, stereotactic radiotherapy is now the 

treatment of choice. 

Radiation oncologist Philip O. Doescher, MD, sees stereotactic 

radiotherapy as a big technological step forward in the treatment of 

prostate cancer.
