Members Newsletter
Winter 2010
Welcome to our winter Foundation Trust newsletter
Review of 2009 and goodbye
from our Chairman
As always, last year was very busy but we continued to deliver a
strong performance. The Care Quality Commission (CQC) awarded
the Foundation Trust a score of good for quality of services and
excellent for quality of financial management.
The excellent score for financial management indicates that the
Foundation Trust has performed very well and has a relatively low
financial risk. The quality of services score, which includes patient safety,
cleanliness and waiting times, is made up of three components:
• Meeting core standards - Fully Met
• Existing commitments - Almost met
• National priorities - Excellent
We received the highest rating in a number of areas including safety and
cleanliness (14/14), waiting times (13/13), high standards of care (6/7),
dignity and respect (9/9), and public health (5/5). The CQC scored us
14/18 for good management because of the number of patients in the
delayed transfer of care category. This target relates to the number of
patients who cannot be transferred home or to residential care once
medically fit.
We were disappointed to have dropped to ‘good’ for quality of service
as our staff work closely with families and other health and social care
agencies to minimise any delays in discharge from hospital. Even when
patients are delayed in getting home or moving into residential care our
staff are all happy to look after them whilst they
remain with us.
Finally, as I step down as chairman I
would like to thank you for all
your messages of support and
good wishes. I really have
enjoyed my time here and
with the quality and
commitment of Board
members, our Council of
Governors and most of all
our staff I am confident the
Foundation Trust will
continue to go from strength
to strength.
With best wishes for 2010.
Gordon Holdcroft
All set for a busy winter
Despite being really busy the hospital is maintaining a strong
performance in patient activities across the Foundation Trust.
In November, we met or exceeded all of our targets with the
exception of waiting time in the Emergency Department (A&E).
Unfortunately, we narrowly missed our waiting time target of 98% with
a performance rating of 97.8% and our staff continue to work
extremely hard to meet this target. However, with the extra pressure put
on the NHS over the winter period it is always a challenge to cope with
the flow of extra emergency patients.
To help with the winter pressures, the local NHS has produced a leaflet
“Choose Well” which identifies which NHS service is appropriate should
you become ill or are injured. Hopefully you will have seen these
messages in adverts or on leaflets that help people choose the
appropriate NHS service and reduce the number of people having to
wait in the Emergency Department unnecessarily.
Healthcare acquired infections remain low in the hospital and we
continue to put extra emphasis on cleaning procedures and infection
control monitoring. Performance on our cancer targets also remain very
good especially in getting patients seen promptly.
Financially we are still
focusing on a strong year
end position but we
continue to monitor closely
and restrict unnecessary
spend to ensure we are in
line with our targets, but at
the same time still
providing the high level of
service required. All staff
are activity involved in our
Prudence Project which is
developing plans to support
the Foundation Trust in the
challenging financial times
ahead. There has been a great response from across the hospital with
existing and new ideas for saving money and improving productivity.
We would also welcome your suggestions on areas where
efficiency savings can be made. Email prudence@bnhft.nhs.uk
Your Hospital – Your Future Your Foundation Trust Your Hospital – Your Future

News in brief
Welcome to our new chairman
As we say goodbye to Gordon Holdcroft, we are delighted to introduce our new chairman Liz Padmore.
Liz, currently a non-executive director of NAGE and Clydesdale Bank, director of YBI and an associate
of the Oxford Institute of Science, Innovation and Society, was chosen from a number of excellent
candidates and started with the Foundation Trust in January.
Liz’s broad experience on a number of national and international boards over recent years will help lead the
Foundation Trust through what is going to be a challenging time ahead for the NHS.
Liz said, “I am delighted to have joined Basingstoke and North Hampshire NHS Foundation Trust. I am really
looking forward to working with an excellent clinical and management team and feel sure that my strategic and
commercial background and my experience working at senior level across the public, private and not for profit
sectors will be a helpful addition to the Board.”
Preventing patients from missing
routine observations in Gynaecology
To prevent patients from missing routine
observations in gynaecology, a large O printed
and laminated onto an A4 sheet of paper is put
on the patient’s locker if they are not available
to have their observations taken.
This is a visual reminder that
observations are outstanding and
will prompt the nursing staff to
carry out observations when the
patient returns to their bed. We
have found this to be very effective
and are planning to extend this idea.
Modern unit for Dermatology
Following complete refurbishment the dermatology unit has been
remodelled to offer a much larger, lighter, brighter and modern clinical area.
Consultant dermatologist, Dr Jenny Powell, explained, “Staff and patients alike are so
pleased to eventually have the use of the specially designed new unit. Skin conditions
are very common and their impact on everyday life is often under estimated and in
reality skin problems can hugely affect an individual’s life. Some patients require a
course of treatments over ten weeks and others may just require a one off
appointment to assess a condition and organise a treatment plan. We also try to
accommodate the needs of our patients. Our first patient appointments for treatments
are early enough so that they can be seen before they start their days work.”
The dermatology unit is accessed through referrals made by GPs to the consultants. A
variety of treatments are available for patients including phototherapy using ultraviolet
light, topical applications of creams and ointments as well as scalp treatments.
Governors’ corner - Introducing your new Governors
Following our recent elections, we are pleased to introduce our
new governors Dennis Huckerby (re-elected), Honora Smith
(re-elected), Marie Chandler, Tony Green, Allan Chick (re-elected),
Paul Bond, Vicky Jarman and Simon Barson.
Our new governors have now started their term following their recent
induction day and will join the Council of Governors for their first
meeting on 2 March 2010.
Ken Allen, Lead Governor and Governor for West Berkshire, Hart and
Rushmoor said “We are delighted to welcome our newly appointed
governors and are also really grateful to the many members who took
the time to vote in the recent elections.”
Finally, we are currently reviewing our members meetings for 2010. If
there are any areas of the hospital you would like to hear more about,
please contact the Foundation Trust office on 01256 313601 or email
basingstoke.hospital@bnhft.nhs.uk.
Marie Chandler - Basingstoke and Deane
Marie is a Business Excellence Manager, which
means she is involved in strategy planning,
business and quality improvement projects and
benchmarking activities with various industry
groups. She believes her experience will help
the Foundation Trust develop a more patient
focused approach whilst still keeping the
business targets firmly in mind.
She has been a patient of the hospital for the past two years and during
that time has approached the Board with several areas of improvement
from a patient’s point of view.
Tony Green - West Berkshire, Hart and Rushmoor
In his last pre-retirement post Tony was a
community officer with a national supermarket
company. In that capacity he was part of a local
town centre management team which, among
many community projects, had involvement in
establishing a new local hospital.
As a member of a local surgery’s patient's
participation group he has represented it at conferences and lectures.
He welcomes the opportunity to contribute to ensuring that the quality
attention Tony and his wife have received at the hospital can be
maintained and further developed for North Hampshire patients.
Paul Bond, Vicky Jarman and Simon Barson were appointed as our
staff governors for Support Services Staff, Other Healthcare
Professionals and Admin, Clerical and Management Staff.
Staff are committed to treating you with
dignity and respect
Basingstoke and North Hampshire NHS Foundation Trust is
committed to providing safe, high quality services for all
patients in our care whilst also ensuring their privacy and
dignity is maintained.
Over the summer of 2009, the Foundation Trust commissioned and
completed £500,000 of capital works and investments to improve
privacy and dignity issues within the patient environment at the
Hospital. This investment has helped to provide single sex
washroom and wc facilities in in-patient areas. Typically this involved
the creation of new sanitary facilities and conversion and upgrade
of existing facilities to ensure segregation was possible.
Subsequently all ward areas with the exception of critical care are
now segregated as single sex accommodation. Other measures
include new dignified gowns, improved bed curtains and new
window blinds.
Who made you go WOW?
It is great to see that since its launch in April 2009, the number
of staff being nominated for a Wow award continues to
increase. This reflects the commitment and dedication of our
staff in ensuring we deliver a high level of customer care.
This high level of customer care was also recognised in November
when we were selected as finalists in the 2009 customer care awards.
This award is the only national award for outstanding customer
service based purely on customer nominations.
Below are the winners of the public
Charlie’s Day Unit aiming to raise
£400,000 for new facilities
Charlie’s Day Unit (CDU) is a medical assessment unit for local
children and young people enabling them to be seen and treated
promptly. Children attend with a whole variety of medical needs,
referred through their GP, nurse or as a self referral for help with
a chronic condition.
This busy unit which opened in 1999 now sees around 7000 patients a
year. CDU is now looking to expand this important children’s care area to
ensure they can provide a modern purpose built unit that meets the needs
of all children in our catchment area. The money raised will provide:
• Young people with an area of privacy whilst they wait for and
undergo consultations.
• An independent waiting/treatment area for children with cancer
which will assist in reducing their exposure to unnecessary infections.
• A much needed quiet room where sensitive conversations can take
place ensuring patient confidentiality remains paramount.
• An open plan area with improved facilities for IT ensuring that CDU
has the capability to better communicate with Primary Care, children’s
services and all departments within the hospital.
Your Hospital – Your Future Your Foundation Trust Your Hospital – Your Future

Meet the staff…
Malcolm Brown,
Waste Porter
In September the Foundation
Trust signed up to 10:10, a
national drive to cut the UK’s
carbon emissions in 2010. The
Foundation Trust now has its
own carbon reduction
programme in place and we
recycle almost half of what we
throw out. A key person in
ensuring this happens is
Malcolm Brown.
Tell us about your role as a waste porter.
I joined the Foundation Trust in April 2009 as a waste porter. My role is
to ensure the amount of waste from the hospital is reduced before
disposing of it and to ensure confidential and hazardous waste is
disposed of appropriately. This covers a wide range of activities including
redeploying equipment such as furniture to other departments rather
than them just being disposed of and ensuring discs and tapes
containing confidential information is shredded.
What does your week entail?
My week entails ensuring all the waste bins including confidential and
recycle ones are tagged correctly, are not contaminated with the
incorrect waste and are disposed of in the most cost effective way.
I break down equipment and furniture that cannot be redeployed, so it
takes up minimal space in the skips which inturn saves us money and
every evening I am responsible for the safe disposal of hazardous
material therefore reducing the impact on the environment.
What motivates you?
As a keen fisherman, I am very aware of the dangers to the
environment, people and wildlife. Looking after our environment is
very important if we are to manage its impact in the future.
The waste team which consists of Angela Tonge, environment manager,
Donna Ward, administrator and myself are committed to ensuring the
Foundation Trust does all it can to reduce the impact on the climate
through the work that we do.
Since taking on this role, paper and skip collections have been reduced
from weekly to fortnightly therefore managing our impact on the
environment and also saving the Foundation Trust money.
DATES FOR YOUR DIARY...
Council of Governor Meetings 2010
welcome to observe the meetings.
The meeting dates for 2010 are:
2 March / 28 April / 22 July / 27 October
Keep us informed…
Please let us know if your details change in any way so we can
update our records accordingly.
If you prefer to receive further newsletters and communication via
email and we do not have your email address, please forward your
details to basingstoke.hospital@bnhft.nhs.uk.
New members
We always welcome feedback and peoples’ views of the
hospital. This feedback can make a real difference to how
your hospital is run and the services we provide.
Therefore, we would like to encourage you to ask friends, relatives
and neighbours who may have used the hospital recently either as a
patient or visitor if they would like to become a member of the
Foundation Trust.
Anyone aged 14 years or over who lives in one of the areas
listed below is able to become a member.
• Basingstoke and Deane
• East Hampshire
• West Berkshire, Hart & Rushmoor
• Anywhere in England and Wales other than the areas listed above
To become a member, people can apply online at:
www.northhampshire.nhs.uk (Select ‘Become a member’ on the
hospital on 01256 313601.
Red tabards
to reduce
interruptions
As part of the work being
undertaken to reduce
medication errors, staff
on C floor are testing out
a simple idea to reduce
the number of mistakes
made when dealing with
medications.
Any nurses who are making
up IV drugs, dealing with
controlled drugs or carrying
out a medication round wear a red tabard. A snapshot audit
showed that there are lots of distractions and interruptions for staff
when dealing with medicines. The red tabard acts as a ‘do not
disturb’ sign so staff and patients know that the staff member is
carrying out safety critical work and so should not be disturbed
unnecessarily.
Nursing staff on the wards say that the introduction of the tabard is
already having an impact on patient safety and are planning a
re-audit to see the actual impact of this new practice.
