Care closer to home: local patients to
benefit from new mobile MRI scanner
Patients across Hampshire now have access
to a mobile MRI scanner as part of Hampshire
Hospitals’ commitment to deliver care closer
to people’s homes.
Hampshire Hospitals launched the mobile
service at the end of April 2012 to reduce the
number of people who would have had to
travel to Basingstoke and North Hampshire
Hospital or Royal Hampshire County
Hospital in Winchester for scans. This will help
to reduce travelling time and potential stress
for the patient.
Gold award for Hospital Radio
Basingstoke DJ
A DJ from Hospital
Radio Basingstoke
recently won the
Gold Award for
best newcomer
at the annual
National Hospital
Radio Awards.
Christine Rowley, who is a volunteer DJ at the
station which broadcasts to patients across
Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital, joined
the station less than a year ago. She was praised
for her presenting style and original
material.
Christine commented: “It was an amazing evening.
I was so pleased to have been nominated but to
win was incredible.”
The awards are held to celebrate the best in
hospital radio broadcasting across 225 UK
hospitals. Hospital Radio Basingstoke was also
shortlisted for the Station of the Year and Special
Event awards.
From nursing to Number 10: Nurse Vicki
Rowse attends reception with Prime
Minister David Cameron
Hampshire Hospitals
Nurse Vicki Rowse
recently attended a
reception with Prime
Minister David Cameron,
held to celebrate the country’s leaders in nursing.
Vicki, who is a children’s community nursing team
leader based at Royal Hampshire County Hospital,
was invited to the two hour reception at 10
Downing Street after being one of just four people
in the country awarded the children and young
people’s nurses leadership development
scholarship by the Florence Nightingale
Foundation. The coveted one year scholarships are
awarded to senior nurses and allied health
professionals who wish to further develop their
leadership skills.
Vicki, who qualified as a nurse in 1983, said: “It
was an amazing experience to meet the Prime
Minister and I enjoyed every minute of it.”
Hampshire Hospitals named among Top
Hospitals – and the patients agree too
HHFT has been named in a list of the top hospitals
in the UK at the annual CHKS awards.
The Top Hospitals scheme, run by the healthcare
improvement and intelligence service, measures
performance against 23 criteria covering safety,
clinical effectiveness, health outcomes, efficiency,
patient experience and quality of care.
HHFT also performed well in the national Inpatient
Survey run by the Care Quality Commission, the
results of which were published at the end of April.
In Basingstoke, patients rated the Foundation Trust
as better than others for the way in which nursing
staff acknowledged them and for communication
and clarity of information. In Winchester and
Andover, patient ratings placed the trust better
than others for the way in which their operations
were explained to them, and the way information
was passed on to their GP.
Hidden talents
Can you sing, dance, perform magic tricks or
just keep an audience entertained, or do you
know someone who can? Would you and a
few colleagues be willing to come along and
perform in a 30 minute slot on the ward or in
the care home? Don’t hide your talents, please
contact Noreen Puttock.
Social evenings for amputees and families
New opportunities
There are several
volunteering
opportunities
available as well
as two new
opportunities:
The Firs (elderly care). The Firs provides 24 hour
nursing care for older patients recovering from
recent illness or injury. Volunteers are required to
visit/befriend
patients, help at meal times and help with
activities, which could include crafts or card/board
games. The minimum age for this opportunity is
17.
Eye theatre – hand holder. The main role of the
volunteer is to support the patient in theatre by
holding the patient’s hand during eye surgery. The
patient’s face is covered during surgery to maintain
sterility, and the patient will be advised not to talk
thus www.northhampshire.nhs.uk
normal methods of communication with the
patient cannot be maintained. The hand holder
provides an important means of communication
with the outside world for the patient.
This is an interesting and rewarding volunteer
opportunity. It is available Monday and Thursday
mornings between 8.30am and 12.30pm. These
are surgery times and cannot be moved, therefore
serious commitment is crucial. Minimum age is 18.
For more information about these and other
opportunities please contact Caroline Whitear.
Hospital
Around 100 volunteers joined hospital staff for
a tea party in St Catherine’s View Restaurant, on
Thursday 9 February 2012. It was an opportunity
for the Foundation Trust to say thank you for the
commitment, enthusiasm and kindness our
volunteers show the patients and staff on a daily
basis. It was also an opportunity to say thank you
and farewell to Pat Bull, who ran voluntary
services on the site for 12 years and has now
embarked on a new role within the Foundation
Trust.
Volunteers from
WRVS, Red
Cross, League of
