While by no means flat, the topography of the Milwaukee area generally lacks the type of drama that makes motorcycle 

rides unforgettable. One clear exception known to all local enthusiasts is the Holy Hill area, a part of the Kettle Moraine 

that was formed some 22,000 years ago when two glaciers met, carving and rearranging the landscape to create a 

barrage of hills and valleys with little in the way of rhyme or reason. Sacred ground for motorcyclists, to be sure. 

At some 1,350 feet above sea level (and nearly 800 feet above Lake Michigan), Holy Hill is one of the highest points in 

southern Wisconsin and home to the Holy Hill National Shrine of Mary, Help to Christians: a monastery, parish, and state 

and national landmark that attracts many thousands of visitors yearly. Its massive red brick church and twin spires are 

visible for miles, and its observation deck and lookout tower provide a commanding view of the surrounding countryside. 

The Shrine and grounds are open daily, although riders wishing to concentrate instead on exploring the roads around Holy 

Hill can expect a religious experience of another variety. The area is partially wooded and packed with two-lane stretches 

that swoop, twist, and dip with the enthusiasm of a sassy roller coaster. Some have been designated by the Wisconsin 

Department of Transportation as Rustic Roads, a designation aimed at recognizing and preserving the state’s scenic rural 

roadways. 

The roads to and from the Holy Hill area are a more sedate run through farmlands and small-to-medium towns, providing 

an appropriate warm-up and cool-down for the excitement of the Kettle Moraine. For exceptional riding relatively close to 

Milwaukee, it doesn’t get much better than Holy Hill.

Directions from Milwaukee 

• Take I-43 north to Brown Deer Road (Hwy 100). 

• Brown Deer Road east to Green Bay Road (Hwy 57). 

• Stay on Green Bay Road north as it becomes N. Cedarburg Road and then Main Street in Thiensville. 

• Turn left after Suburban Harley-Davidson onto Freistadt Road (Cty F) and head west past Hwy 41/45 as it 

becomes Hubertus Road. 

• Turn right on Hwy 175. 

• Turn left on Holy Hill Road (Hwy 167) and head west to the Holy Hill area. 

• Turn left on Carmel Road to visit the shrine, and/or explore the area roads as you wish.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS CONTINUED 

• To start back, get to Hwy 83, a north/south route that intersects with both Holy Hill Road and Cty Q, and head south. 

• Just past the Oconomowoc River and north of the town of North Lake, turn left on Cty VV and head east to the town of 

Merton. 

• Follow the signs for Cty VV as it heads south and joins with Sussex Road headed east into the town of Sussex. 

• Continue to follow the signs for Cty VV as it turns into Silver Spring Drive heading east. 

• Stop at Milwaukee Harley-Davidson just west of Hwy 45, or else head south on Hwy 45 until you reach I-94 east 

to Milwaukee.

just spend an hour people-watching. 

Festival Listings 

Summer in Milwaukee is one big party. Every weekend there is an ethnic festival on the lakefront at the Maier Festival 

grounds, and there is lots of food, music and drink to be had. Summerfest, a 10-day music festival, is the biggest, with top 

names performing at the Marcus Amphitheatre and other well-known performers appearing at the many other free stages.

Cedar Creek Settlement 

Unique shopping can be found within these history-filled buildings constructed 150 ago when German and Irish settlers 

first established the little community known as Cedarburg, Wisconsin. Built in 1864 to manufacture woolen goods for the 

Union Army during the civil war, the solid stone structure is now home to numerous antique and specialty shops, restaurants 

and even a winery. It was awarded a place on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

Allen-Bradley Company Clock 

A Guinness Book record-holder, this 280 foot Milwaukee landmark is billed as the largest four-faced clock in the world and 

features octagonal faces nearly twice the size of the clocks on London’s Big Ben.

One of the most unique and recognizable features of the local skyline, the Domes- as locals refer to it- allow you to experience 

nature’s variety and abundance within the confines of its uniquely shaped greenhouses. Each dome has a distinct 

climate and exhibits plants in a naturalistic setting. Visit and experience a desert oasis, a tropical jungle and special floral 

gardens all in one afternoon.

Art Museum 

The awesome design of the Brise Soleil addition to the museum designed by Santiago Calatrava is perhaps the most 

recognizable component of the Milwaukee Art Museum and worth the trip on its own. If you venture inside you will find an 

impressive collection that spans the centuries from ancient Greece and Egypt to the pop art of Warhol and Lichtenstein 

and beyond.

Joan of Arc Chapel 

This chapel dates back to the 15th century and is known as the location where Joan of Arc prayed before she was burnt 

at the stake. As legend would have it, the stone she kissed in this chapel is perceptibly colder than all the others. This 

chapel was dismantled stone by stone then reconstructed first in Long Island in 1926/27 then in Milwaukee in 1964 when 

it was presented to Marquette University.

Holy Hill National Shrine of Mary 

For a commanding view some1350 feet above sea level, visit this registered U.S. landmark, Holy Hill and its accompanying 

shrine and church, sit atop one of the highest points in the state. The grounds of Holy Hill are memorable for their 

collective beauty, period architectural style, colorful history, and religious significance.

House on the Rock 

This 14-room architectural marvel sculpted atop the 60-foor Deer Shelter Rock, is the original structure of what is now a 

mind-boggling array of rooms beginning with a 375-foot ramp through the treetops that takes visitors to the entrance of the 

House where a bell gallery, waterfalls, massive fireplaces and walls of rock can been seen. Built as a critical parody of 

Frank Lloyd architecture, the House On The Rock is stuffed to the gills with miniatures and oddities to delight and mystify.

Built in 1892, this Flemish Renaissance Revival Mansion represents the epitome of America’s Gilded Age Splendor in

Milwaukee Mile 

Since 1903, The Milwaukee Mile has been one of the premier venues in American motorsports. It is the oldest operating 

motor speedway in the world. During the past century, the facility has played an integral role in shaping the face of 

auto racing. The roster of past winners at America’s Legendary Oval is a veritable “who’s-who” of racing history, including 

names like Barney Oldfield, Rex Mays, Parnelli Jones, A.J. Foyt, the Unsers, the Andrettis and Dale Earnhardt, Jr.

Milwaukee Public Museum 

This museum set the standard for museums all over the world with the construction of very first natural history diorama. 

Within its walls you can find more than 6 million specimens and artifacts ranging from dinosaurs and bugs, to life in a 

European Village and even life in turn-of-the-century Milwaukee. Butterflies fly freely here in their own pavilion, and a 

two-story rain forest and exhibits about Native American Indians, pre-Columbian times, the Arctic, and Asia make for an 

interesting visit.

Cave of the Mounds 

Deemed the most significant cave in the upper Midwest and a National Natural Landmark, Cave of the Mounds is a 

natural limestone cave discovered when blasting in a limestone quarry revealed a cavern over 20 feet high. Since itís 

accidental discovery more than 60 years ago visitors have been awed by this natural geologic wonder. Guided tours lead 

visitors past an unforgettable array of crystal formations.
