A PERFECT ENDING FOR CHAPTER SEVEN
By Perry Lefko
The final chapter of Chapter Seven's brilliant racing career
will be written Sunday night in Fort Lauderdale, Florida at the
Dan Patch Awards when the five-year-old male trotter is
officially saluted as the top standardbred horse of 2012.
The award, voted on by the U.S. Harness Writers
Association, had been announced back on December 20, so
it is not a surprise. That said, it will be a chance to pay
homage to the bay who overcame a lot in his life - two throat
operations as a two-year-old and sickness in his
three-year-old year - en route to reaching the pinnacle of
harness racing supremacy.
For owner Richard
Gutnick, trainer Linda
Toscano and driver Tim
Tetrick, it will be
somewhat of a
sentimental night
because Chapter Seven
has been retired to the
The king will be crowned
tonight in Ft. Lauderdale
breeding shed, his
achievements on the
track over but not
forgotten.
"You work your whole lifetime in racing to get a horse of
that caliber and then campaigning a horse of that caliber,"
Toscano told Harness Racing Update on Friday. "It's a bit of
a bittersweet moment when it's done. These are the kind of
things that you can only dream, and when the dream
becomes a reality I still pinch myself every day."
Toscano had a career year in 2012. She also trained
Market Share, voted the top three-year-old male trotting colt,
and Heston Blue Chip, the top three-year-old colt pacer.
Toscano became the first woman to train a Hambletonian
winner (Market Share) and the first to be named trainer of
the year. But being a part of the horse of the year is
something truly special.
"It's the thrill of a lifetime," she said.
Gutnick, who has been in the business for 30 years, lucked
out last year as the owner of both Chapter Seven and
Market Share. But being the owner of the horse of the year
tops everything.
"You always hope and dream, but usually it does not
become reality," he said. "In this case, the horse surpassed
my dreams. It's been a privilege being an owner and having
had the opportunity to watch him week in and week out
when he was training and racing. The excitement in
watching him and his desire to win…that horse did not like to
lose.
"I believe he's one of the greatest trotters of all time,"
Gutnick added. "I don't think we even saw his top end. There
was a time when he qualified in 1:51 4/5 (in May) that Tim
said, 'I didn't realize we were going that fast.' He said 'if I
had chirped to him he would have beaten 1:50.'"
Chapter Seven beat out Market Share in the voting for
horse of the year. Were it not for the fact Market Share is
also owned by Gutnick and partners, Chapter Seven might
have been actively campaigning as a five-year-old.
"When you win the Hambletonian, that horse usually gets
serious, serious consideration for horse of the year,"
Toscano said. "When you have a stablemate owned by the
same man that is his competition, that was kind of a cool
thing to happen; certainly that's something that usually
happens in the movies. From a little of a heartstring tug, I
was kind of rooting for Chapter Seven (to win horse of the
year honors) because I was living with him for three years
and I knew what he had overcome to get to that point.
"This horse got world recognition. I've trained some good
horses in my life, but this horse took me from being a good
trainer to having a world-class horse. I'm more about the
horse. I try really hard not to make it about me under any
circumstances. He's the one that achieved this. All I did
was steer him."
Chapter Seven won his honor with only 10 starts - the least
of any horse of the year in harness racing history - but that
was largely to the limited schedule available to trotters past
their sophomore season. But while lacking quantity, he had
quality, winning eight and finishing second twice by less than
a combined length. He equaled a world-record for a mile
track with a lifetime best of 1:50 1/5 in the Nat Ray
Invitational on August 4 at the Meadowlands in only his
fourth start of the season. The following week he set a
stakes record with a time of 1:52 1/5 taking the Maxie Lee at
Harrah's Philadelphia. He missed the world record for a
five-eighths mile track by a mere one-fifth of a second.
His crowning achievement - and the race that may have
defined his entire career - came in the Breeders Crown at
Woodbine on October 27. Parked the entire mile, he still
scored a 1¼-length victory. Tetrick, who was steering him for
a good part of his career, stepped out of the bike in
amazement. Chapter Seven made it look so easy, so fluid.
"To me, that's probably one of the most amazing races I've
watched my entire life," Gutnick said. "I was told by a
number of people it may have been the best race in a couple
of decades. Front-end speed was not holding up and he was
parked the entire mile and he still put away the best of
Europe. That to me that was remarkable."
"He went through his races as a three-year-old and he was
good and I thought he was a nice horse, better than a
throwaway, but to say I thought he was going to be a great
horse would be a lie," Toscano said. "Last year he put it all
together and did what I hoped he was capable of doing. But
I'd be lying to say I thought he could win with the kind of mile
he did in the Breeders Crown."
By Windsongs Legacy out of the Dream Vacation mare La
Riviera Lindy, Chapter Seven cost a mere $42,000 when
purchased as a yearling by Gutnick at the Harrisburg Sales
in 2009. The colt retired with 20 wins in 28 races, four
seconds and one third and lifetime earnings of just below $2
million.
"I was never in the economic bracket to buy the horses at
the top tier," Gutnick said. "To me, it's especially gratifying
that he has overcome all the problems and the obstacles
that were thrown at him. To me it was remarkable his will to
win."
"He had such an incredible desire to win and that you can't
teach a horse," Toscano added. "Either they're that
competitive or awesome or they're not, and from day one
working was his strongest point. He loved so much going out
every day and I think that had as much a part of it as
anything. I had no clue whatsoever that he was a good horse
at all, let alone a great horse. He was just a horse. He wasn't
staked because we thought he was a great horse, but once
we got him to the races even then I wasn't sure."
Actor Emilio Estevez to Apply For “Q” License
By Bill Finley
FORT LAUDERDALE--His interest in harness growing
due to his involvement in the upcoming movie Johnny
Longshot, actor and director Emilio Estevez is in the
process of applying for a license to drive horses in
qualifying races.
Estevez wrote the screenplay for the movie and will also
act in it and direct the movie. Shooting for the movie is set
to begin this spring and much of it will be done at Lebanon
Raceway in the Cincinnati area.
USTA Director Chris Schick learned of Estevez’s desire
to drive when talking to the actor.
(<strong>continued</strong> on next page)

“He said he wants to try driving,” Schick said. “He thought
it would help him promoting the movie, but it’s not just that.
He’s really interested in it. From what I understand he’s
already trained a few horses at Scioto Downs Let’s hope he
gets hooked.”
Can Racing Get Slots Players to Cross Over?
By Bill Finley
FORT LAUDERDALE-- Day
Three of Harness Racing Congress
VI was highlighted by a spirited
debate among panelist who were
given the task of explaining how
racetracks can get slot players to
wager on horse racing. And in one
of the more blunt comments that you
would ever hear at a racing industry
get-together such as this one, Mark
Loewe, Vice President of Ohio
Racing Operations for Penn National
Loewe: “Slots players
are not going to be on
horse races.”
Gaming called any efforts to get slot
bettors to play the races a “waste of
time.”
Loewe referred to studies and
articles that pointed out that slots players and horseplayers
are completely different animals.
“We are expending too much energy on slot players
because what we are really trying to do is change the mind
set of a gambler, a gambler who seeks entertainment and
amusement from mindless instant gratification,” he said. “We
are trying to convert them to a cerebral form of entertainment
with a human element involved in the outcome.”
Loewe argued that racing should instead target potential
customers who have discovered other gambling games that
involve skill.
“We should look to go after people who prefer games of
skill, people at chess tournaments, poker tournaments,
bridge players. And I think the biggest pool of potential
players are fantasy sports enthusiasts. These are people
who scour data day after day and look to have a competitive
edge over their rivals. If racing can get our data into the
hands of these people I believe there is an untapped pool of
players whose egos would make them our players. They will
want to prove they can disseminate the data better than their
colleagues and have a greater monetary return on their
investment. I am not trying to be negative at all. There is a
lot of potential and a lot of untapped resources that we at
Penn National, and in our new ventures in Ohio, are
exploring.”
For the most part, the other panelists did not agree. Stacy
Cahill spoke of the massive handle increase at Scioto
Downs once the slots were put in place and Steve Wolf
extolled the virtues of promotions Pompano Park did to get
its casino customers involved in racing. One was a
promotion tied in to the Kentucky Derby and another was
allowing fans to ride in the starting gate car.
Jason Settlemoir used facts and figures to show that
racing and slots mixed well at the two New York tracks
owned by Jeff Gural, Vernon Downs and Tioga Downs.
“This is a marriage that can work,” Settlemoir said.
Settlemoir said studies showed that 70 percent of the
people who played slots at Tioga Downs also bet on horse
racing, at least occasionally, and said the same figure for
Vernon was 66 percent. He also noted that slot play at
both tracks increased by about 32 percent during racing
season.
Shifting the subject somewhat, Loewe suggested that the
best way to increase handle was to offer a quality racing
product.
“It’s about the product and that is what we have to focus
on,” he said. “The quality of the product is the primary
factor and one of the ways to guarantee a good product is
to not race as much as we do.”
The morning sessions began with a panel entitled
“Surveying the Legislative Landscape in the Wake of
Ontario.” The panelists shared their ideas about how to
keep the slot revenue in their states and provinces from
going away and each one said that building relationships
with politicians was a must...even if that meant greasing a
few palms.
“This is going to be a struggle every single year,” said
Ron Battoni, the executive director of the Pennsylvania
Harness Horsemen’s Association. “The government is
always looking for money and the first place they look at is
the racing industry.”
(<strong>continued</strong> on next page)
HarnessRacingUpdate.com • 3/3/13 PAGE 4 of 8
Battoni said one of the most effective tools in the fight to
keep slots was to form a PAC. He chided the many
Pennsylvania horsemen who refused to contribute to his
organization’s PAC.
“We approach people about our PAC and far too many
people ignore us,” he said. “The political leaders were are
talking to will come to us and say there’s a tough election
coming up, can you help us, we need some money. It’s
devastating and frustrating to see people who are racing for
$120 million on the harness side turn their backs on us.
Eighty percent of the people won’t help us out. It’s your call,
horsemen. Wake up and smell the coffee. This is not going
away. They’ll come in one day and with one stroke of the
pen this could all be gone.”
Joe Faraldo, the President and CEO of the SOA of New
York, concurred: “Dip into your pockets. You have the
money. Horsemen need to support PACs.”
At a USTA Rules Committee meeting the subject of
whipping came up with committee members acknowledging
that the way the USTA rules on the subject were written
made them confusing and hard to enforce. It was suggested
that some of the language be changed in order to make the
penalties listed mere suggestions. Sensing that the public at
large would not agree to any rules that may look as a
softening on the subject of whipping the language was not
changed.
Committee member Alan Leavitt argued that more, not
less, needed to be done when it comes to whipping
violations.
“Unless we ban one-handed whipping we will not have a
sport that appeals to the type of people we are trying to
appeal to,” he said. “Whipping is offensive and it has to stop.
We banned one-handed whipping in Kentucky and not one
dollar was lost in handle and the horses were going just as
fast.”
Fellow committee member Billy Johnston took the other
side, noting that gamblers at the Chicago tracks not only
didn’t seem t mind whipping but could often be heard yelling
for drivers to hit the horses more during a stiff stretch drive.
Luchento Named Harness Horsemen
At a track that was supposed to have been closed by
now, in a sport many have written off for dead, business is
booming at the Meadowlands. Total all-sources handle for
the 2013 meet is up a whopping 33 percent. On a recent
Friday night, handle was up 60 percent over the same
night a year earlier. A $3 million night in handle used to be
a cause for celebration. In 2013, it has become the norm.
Credit goes to the Meadowlands management team, but it
didn't exactly reinvent the wheel or the sport of harness
racing. None of this has been done with gimmicks, T-shirts
giveaways or by bringing in fading rock stars for concerts.
Rather, the Meadowlands realized that it had to put on a
better product.
Horse racing really isn't any different than any other
business that sells something to the consumer. Give them a
good product and price it fairly and people will buy it.
Horse racing really isn't any different than any other
business that sells something to the consumer. Give them a
good product and price it fairly and people will buy it.
McDonald's sells inexpensive burgers and fries that are
tasty, and that's how it has become one of the most
successful businesses in the world.
Somehow, though, that simplest of philosophies has been
forgotten at so many racetracks. Small fields, unplayable
races, too many racing dates and high takeouts have
become the norm, no matter that they are a guarantee for
disaster.
At some tracks, especially harness tracks, putting on a
good show is no longer important. Their money is made in
the casinos and racing exists as a necessary annoyance.
Good racing? Bad racing? They have no reason to care.
That's not the case at the Meadowlands, which can't get
alternative gaming because of Atlantic City's influence on
key politicians like Governor Chris Christie. The lifeblood of
the track is betting handle and management set out this
year to get every penny possible to come through the
betting windows. They knew the only way to do that was to
put the very best possible product on the racetrack every
night.
One of harness racing's biggest problems is that favorites
dominate. At some tracks, particularly the half-milers, it's not
unusual to see the chalk winning at 45 percent or so. Even
with a one-mile track, Meadowlands racing had become way
too predictable.
Management realized that part of the problem was the way
races had been written. "Conditioned" races allowed horse to
qualify based on how much money they had earned over
their recent starts and oftentimes horses with huge class
advantages were able to slip in. The result was an
overabundance of races with unbeatable odds-on favorites,
exactly the type of race most bettors deplore.
Condition races were largely done away with and replaced
with "ABC" races. Just as they do at the dog track,
Meadowlands horses were classified as A's, B's, or C's
based on their ability and each letter group races against
one another. The result has been evenly matched fields and
wide open betting affairs. Favorites win only 21 percent of
the time in the ABC races.
The racing secretary's office also deserves an A plus. It
has consistently filled the races with 10 or more horses.
When it looks as if a race is going to fall short of a full field,
in many cases it isn't held. With 11 nominees to the Overbid
Series of stakes races, the racing office took no chances on
winding up with a six-horse field. The race was scrapped.
"The racing itself has been just fantastic," said
Meadowlands Director of Racing Operations Darin Zoccali.
"[Racing Secretary] Peter Koch has done a tremendous job
of classifying the horses. Many of the races are difficult,
but this game is supposed to be challenging. That's what
makes it great."
The push for a bigger handle included an increased
emphasis on low takeout bets that were proving popular
with the public. The Meadowlands' most popular bet was
the Pick 4 with a 15 percent takeout. Meanwhile, the Pick
Six was proving to be a tough sell. So management got rid
of the Pick Six and added a second Pick 4, again with the
reasonably low 15 percent take. The bettors have loved it.
The final piece of the puzzle became the customer
experience. Good racing, full fields and low takeouts won't
work if the customer has a lousy meal or gets barked at by
a surly mutual clerk.
The final piece of the puzzle became the customer
experience. Good racing, full fields and low takeouts won't
The Meadowlands has
gotten here after some of
the darkest days in its
history. The Meadowlands
was previously owned by
the state and Christie
wanted it closed because it
was losing money. It looked
like no one would take it off
the state's hands until Gural
came in at the eleventh hour
and leased the track.
According to sources, it is
now profitable.
Yes, Gural is gambling that someday the Meadowlands will
get slots, but he's also trying to prove that horse racing can
still work. That's why he cares so much about the show he
and his staff put on. What they've done is to sell a good
product, and people are buying it again. It's a lesson for all
horse racing.
Just Wondering
In regards to your Ron Burke article, the only thing that
troubles me about him is his dismal record(as opposed to
his normal record) when his horses race out of detention)
especially at The Meadowlands. Sweet Lou is a good
example.
Thanks for the great article on Jeff Gural. I am getting back
into the sport after leaving partly due to the doping and
corruption and appreciate the efforts he is doing to clean up
the sport. Articles like this give honest people hope for a
beloved sport!
You’re So Kind
I just wanted to tell you how much I've enjoyed your
publication recently. I've always kind of just skimmed over it
and never really sat down and read it. I'm not sure which
article caught my eye, but I read it all the way through one
day, and now I'm hooked. I look forward now to when it
comes out. Keep up the good work.
In the first leg of the Aquarius series, Bakin On The
the gate but couldn't beat Mr. Dennis (Andy Miller) to the
first turn. Post time favorite Escape The News (Yannick
Gingras, $2.40) made a quick move at the quarter followed
by Warrawee Needy (Mark MacDonald, $5.60) swinging 3
wide to take the lead just before the half and hanging on
for the win (1:50.0) in his 2013 debut.

In The Junior Trendsetter Final, Humility (Tim Tetrick),
Wilcox (Yannick Gingras) & Resistance Futile (Andy Miller,
$2.80) all had an aggressive start but A Bettor World (David
Miller) lead into the first turn and was able to hang on until
just after the 1/2. A Bettor World eased up on the outside
and Silva Stables was holding on to a group lead at the 3/4.
Down the stretch, Terror High (Ron Pierce, $4.40) started a
move through the pack while Resistance Futile went 3 wide
