Stein Sees Rosy Results for Lexington Select Sale

The world may be in turmoil and the stock market roller 

coaster may cause some people to head for the exits, but 

Geoff Stein doesn't worry as he looks forward to the 

Lexington Selected Yearling Sale in early October. 

"There is never a shortage of things to worry about in the 

world," he says. "The horse business is very resilient 

regardless of external factors. I'm optimistic and looking 

forward to a good sale. Besides, I don't worry about things 

I can't control. 

When there is a 

good horse in the 

ring, people will be 

bidding." 

Stein has good 

reason for his optimism. 

The

Yearling catalog is 

an embarrassment 

First-crop stallion Deweycheatumnhowe 

of riches. There 

are so many extraordinary 

mares with sons and daughters among the 

yearlings that one couldn't begin to list them all. If a buyer 

cannot find a horse to suit his taste in this sale, he should 

get out of the horse business. 

Stein predicts that yearling buyers gravitate toward firstcrop 

stallions because the superstar colts get so many 

good mares in their first season at stud. 

"That's a trend in the business," says Stein. "We have 

50 by Deweycheatumnhowe, 45 by 

Somebeachsomewhere, and 25 by Crazed. I'm sure buyers 

will be very interested in them." 

A glance at the catalog shows that Hanover Shoe Farms 

and Blue Chips Farms are both back as consignors at the 

sale. Both have sold in Lexington in the past, but return 

this year with power-packed consignments. 

Hanover is sending two dozen yearlings to the Bluegrass 

to be sold and its consignment includes a variety by its 

own sires and a handful by select stallions from other 

farms. 

The Blue Chip consignment of a half-dozen consists of a 

colt and filly by both Credit Winner and 

Somebeachsomewhere, plus an Art Major filly and an 

Andover Hall colt.

Fashion Farm and Walnut Hall Ltd. are also new names 

among the consignors. The 12 from Fashion Farm represent 

eight different sires, including a pair of fillies by 

Broadway Hall, sire of this year's Hambo winner Broad 

Bahn. 

Not surprisingly, the Walnut Hall Ltd. group of 15 yearlings 

consists of seven colts and seven fillies by Hambo 

winner Deweycheatumnhowe (A trio of the Deweys are 

consigned with partners). Dewey's first crop is Kentucky-eligible 

and includes a half-sister to Hambo winner 

Amigo Hall and many others with deep pedigrees. The 

lone pacing member of the Walnut Hall Ltd. consignment 

is a colt by Somebeachsomewhere. 

Brittany Farms has 32 yearlings with royal pedigrees, 

including Sail On By, a sister to Triple Crown winner 

Glidemaster. 

Cameo Hills Farm, Diamond Creek Farm, Kentuckiana 

Farms, Perretti Farms, Winbak Farms, and Walnut Hall 

Stock Farm all have substantial consignments. 

But not all the power comes from major breeding farms. 

There are many superb yearlings from smaller operations 

and they are often sold by agents. After all, that is the way 

that reigning Horse of the Year Rock N Roll Heaven went

Lexington Selected Yearling Sale cont. 

For example, the appropriately-named Moni Maker 

Stable is selling just three yearlings in Lexington this fall, 

but each one is out of a daughter of the stable's namesake 

mare Moni Maker. All Trot is a Donato Hanover colt from 

All Our Moni (Self Possessed); Dewey Love Her is a 

Deweycheatumnhowe filly out of Live Moni (Conway Hall); 

and Stay In Touch is a Credit Winner lass from Touch Of 

Moni (Valley Victory). Don't think that trotting fanciers 

won't be all over those prospects at sale time. 

The sale begins on Monday, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. when the 

first 115 yearlings are slated to be hammered down to new 

owners. It continues for the next two evenings, then 

switches to a daytime schedule. The sessions on Thursday 

and Friday (Oct. 6-7) begin at 11:30 a.m. when the 

final 337 yearlings are up for sale. 

It's a new schedule, but Stein says, "I always think the 

schedule is a secondary factor," he says. "Some will like it, 

some won't." 

Levesque Suspended for One Year 

French trainer-driver Pierre Levesque, one of the top 

trainers in France, has lost his license for one year after 

his starter, Ranch Wood, tested positive for the drug 

Betamethasone June 2 at France's Dozulé racetrack, in a 

race reserved for apprentice jockeys. "I treated the horse 

and I will suffer the consequences," Levesque told 

Paris-Turf. Cont. p3

Betamethasone is a glucocorticoid steroid with 

anti-inflammatory properties, and is typically applied topically 

to treat skin irritation. His veterinarian, Hans Sthil, 

told the publication, "The horse ran two weeks after being 

treated. This does not correspond to the rate found in the 

test. This was not a doping, but simply a medication. I had 

a similar recent experience witt a dressage horse taking 

part in the World Championships in Leipzig. It was treated 

with the same product and exactly the same dosage as 

Ranch Wood on April 18, 2011. He underwent two tests by 

different laboratories April 25 and 29 and each time the 

tests were negative. It's difficult to understand." Levesque 

trained and drove the 2007 and 2008 Prix d'Amerique 

winner Offshore Dream, and trained but did not drive the 

2009 winner Mealnes du Corta. Thursday, Levesque announced 

that he would appeal the decision, which carries 

a heavy penalty of 15,000 Euros. "Yesterday, I was not in 

a position to react, having been devastated by the penalty," 

he told Paris-Turf. "Of course, I will appeal the decision. 

This will have serious consequences, both financial 

and social. Indeed, it prevents me from working for a year 

and I can not afford that. So I will hold a major sale, and 

most of my employees to be dismissed, which is unfortunate. 

I also wanted to thank all the racegoers, owners and 

professionals who support me through their many messages 

of sympathy.” 

Drivers Pick Their Charities for Championship 

The nine drivers competing in the Drivers' Championship 

races on Sunday afternoon at Tioga Downs have all selected 

a charity and agreed to donate their five percent 

earnings on those races to those charities. 

David Miller, Ed Hensley, Tim Tetrick and Yannick 

Gingras have all selected the Standardbred Retirement 

Foundation. Brian Sears will be competing for the August 

Horseplay Charity of the Month at Tioga Downs: STAT 

(Southern Tier Alternative Therapies) who work with special 

needs children through alternative therapies, including 

animal assisted therapies. Jody Jamieson, who is leading 

at the halfway point, will be donating his earnings to Luke's 

Troops, who supports Canadian troops fighting for freedom 

and once back home takes the troops to NHL hockey 

games. George Brennan has selected the Wounded Warrior 

Project which provides programs and services to severely 

injured service members during the time between 

active duty and the transition to civilian life. Ron Pierce will 

once again be driving for his charity, Blackwater Wildlife 

Refuge in Cambridge, Md., protecting swamp land and 

animals that call it their home. 

As in past years, Tioga Downs Casino and Jeff Gural will 

personally match dollar for dollar all the money that is 

raised for charity with the drivers' earnings. 

Six races have been put together for the final leg of the 

2011 Drivers' Championship at Tioga Downs to kick off on 

Sunday at 1:30 p.m. 

Going into the final leg of the Drivers' Championship, 

Jody Jamieson holds a three point lead over Yannick 

Gingras and Brian Sears, who are tied for second with 20 

points. 

Also featured on Sunday at Tioga Downs is the Zweig 

Memorial Trot for 3-year-olds. Hambletonian winner Broad 

Bahn leads a group of 15 colts in two open divisions, while 

Hambletonian Oaks winner Bold And Fresh and New York 

superstar Jezzy will eye up another battle in one of two 

divisions for the fillies. 

The annual driver meet and greet will begin on the 

trackside apron at 12 noon, along with the Tim Tetrick 

bobblehead giveaway (while supplies last). 

Tioga Downs and the USTA have joined forces on 

Sunday to offer a $5,000 guaranteed Pick-4 pool on the 

final four races of the afternoon (10 through 13).

Big Jim Sidelined

Big Jim (Western Ideal), last season's Dan Patch winner 

as champion 2-year-old pacer, has been sidelined and 

is out of action for the rest of the year. He was removed 

from the Jug Future Wagering Pool by Delaware County 

Fair Manager Phil Terry. Jim Carr, the colt's owner, said 

Big Jim suffered injuries to both rear ankles. "We won't 

know until next week the full extent of his injuries," Carr 

said. 

At that point, a decision will be made on the colt's future. 

Carr had hoped to race Big Jim at four, but the injuries 

might send him into retirement. The Breeders Crown 

champion was 4 for 10 this season, including victories in 

the New Jersey Classic and a Meadowlands Pace elimination 

New Development in New PA Track Effort

There is positive movement in the effort to bring a fourth 

harness track to Pennsylvania. 

The long-stalled plans to construct a racino in Lawrence 

County got a boost when the local commissioners voted 

this week to commit 1% of the county's future gaming 

revenues from the proposed track 45 miles northwest of 

Pittsburgh to fund a bond issue. 

American Harness Tracks has until Sept. 12 to show the 

state's Harness Racing Commission that it can raise at 

least $150 million of a projected $500 million construction 

budget. 

The New Castle Times reports that the Lawrence 

County commissioners have multiple legal opinions that 

the funding plan passes legal muster. The commissioners' 

support is a $50 million commitment to make Valley View 

Downs a reality.

Il Villaggio (Yankee Glide) and Jody Jamieson swept 

past the favored Arch Madness (Balanced Image) rounding 

the final turn and trotted to a new track record to win 

the $213,500 Pride in Progress. 

He bested a field of top Free For All trotters by 4-1/4 

lengths in a time of 1:53. Hot Shot Blue Chip (Revenue S) 

and Dave Magee finished second, with Al Cantab (Cantab 

Hall), the other half of a Burgess-trained entry, finishing 

third. 

Starting from the second tier, in post 10, Jamieson was 

concerned with his position trailing Hot Shot Blue Chip at 

the gate. As the starter pulled away Brian Sears sent Arch 

Madness to the lead as Il Villaggio followed All Cantab, 

driven by Trace Tetrick, and Hot Shot Blue Chip through a 

:26.3 opening quarter. Lucky Jim (S J's Photo), tabbed the 

second choice, broke stride before the quarter and was 

never a factor. 

"He was hot behind the gate tonight and wanted to go 

over top of everybody else," Jamieson said of the 

4-year-old. "I was concerned about the trailing spot. 

They're always cautious with Hot Shot Blue Chip, but he 

got away okay." 

As Arch Madness reached the half (:54.3), Jamieson 

decided he could sit no longer, pulling from fourth and 

surging on the outside to challenge. Heading the leader at 

three quarters (1:23.1), Il Villaggio dispatched the favorite 

and trotted home in :29.4 to earn his fifth win in 10 starts. 

"I was still pulling on him pretty hard at the half and I 

decided to take my shot," he explained. "When we got to 

Arch Madness he was done. My horse powered by him." 

Fourth in his last start, the $300,000 Nat Ray, Il Villaggio 

added his name to the Indiana Downs record book. 

Owned by Brittany Farms, Blue Chip Bloodstock, Inc. and 

Il Villaggio Partners, the stallion lowered the track record 

for older trotters by one-fifth second.
