Volume 31 News for the Extended Harrington Family July 31, 2010
Aiding Physicians
As Well as
Helping Our
Patients
Members of our Harrington family worked quickly
after a July 16 fire severely damaged the Charlton
Family Practice at 246 Southbridge Road in
Charlton, home to doctors Paul Harrington, Hope
Ring and Andrey Sayko as well as nurse
practitioner Carleen McQuaid.
The providers were set up in our Sturbridge office
at 128 Main Street, thanks to the quick work of
Harrington executives and staffers, including
Kristin Morales, Executive Director of Harrington
Physician Services; Tom Sullivan, our Chief
Financial Officer; and Deborah Senerth, Practice
Operations Manager. The Lab, I.T. and Registration
Departments quickly made sure the office would
receive all the information necessary to see
patients.
The hard work by our staff to find temporary
homes for these providers who have privileges at
Harrington Hospital is just another example of the
work all of you are doing to bring Total Local Care
to the community – not only, in this case, for our
patients, but for four of our providers as well.
Sincerely,
Ed Moore, President & CEO
More than 2,500 Athletes Turn Out in
Webster for Triathlon
Harrington HealthCare was the official medical sponsor of the 2010 SheROX Webster Triathlon, held
July 25 at Memorial Beach. For the second year, Harrington partnered with the race company to
promote health and wellness for nearly 2,500 female athletes who participated in the half-mile
swim, 12-mile bike ride and 2.9-mile run.
Harrington had a strong presence on Saturday, July 24 at the pre-event expo, held at Bartlett High
School in Webster. We held demonstrations of breast self exams and provided mammography
information, physician lists and hospital literature to families and participants who came by the
Harrington table. We also raffled off a kayak, complete with paddles and vest.
On race day, Harrington physicians, nurses and Webster EMS staffed the medical tent at the event,
which is the fastest-growing all-women’s triathlon series in the U.S. A heartfelt thanks to Webster ER
Supervisor Nancy Cutler, as well as ER physician Court Stephens and Orthopedic Surgeon
Young-Ho Oh, who attended to athletes who required attention during the race..
“We are pleased to be the official medical sponsor for such a prestigious event, held right here in
Webster,” said Harrington CEO Ed Moore. “Our dedicated medical staff attended to each and
every athlete who needed assistance both during and after the race.” ■
Healthcare Commissioner
Tours Harrington
David Morales, state Commissioner of Health
Care Finance and Policy, toured Harrington July
29th and met with President and CEO Ed Moore
and members of the Senior Leadership Team.
Morales discussed the state of health care in
Massachusetts, what the federal health care
reform bill might mean for community hospitals,
and also discussed Harrington’s intention to
modernize and expand the Emergency Care
Department on the Webster campus as well as
its outreach into the communities it serves.
“We’re very pleased that Commissioner Morales
and the current administration understands the
importance a growing community healthcare
organization plays in the lives of those in the
surrounding communities,” Moore said. “We’re
also very pleased that we had the chance to
talk to him about our success in bringing
healthcare closer to the residents of this
region, through our community outreach and
opening of medical office buildings in the
Harrington service area.” ■
Harrington Advances in Community Outreach
Through Formation of Hospital/Citizens Groups
Part of Harrington’s mission is to stay connected with the communities it serves. We strive to learn
valuable information about our patients and their families in order to provide adequate resources,
screenings and literature to populations in need.
Over the course of the past six months, Harrington formed a seven-member committee that
developed a Health Assessment for the community. The committee released a phone and
internet-based survey in July 2010, collecting close to 500 responses across seven major towns:
Southbridge, Sturbridge, Charlton, Webster, Oxford, Spencer and Dudley.
The information will be trended and submitted to the Health Assessment Committee in the fall and
will help shape the Community Outreach for the next three years at Harrington Hospital.
Harrington also has formed a Patient Family Advisory Council, chaired by Rae-Lynn Salisbury, our
Director of Nutrition Services. The Council held its first meeting with both hospital members and
patients and their family members on July 20.
Salisbury said that the Patient Family Advisory Council's mission is “to give patients a voice in
hospital policies and procedures.” The committee will help Harrington form partnerships between
patients, their families and healthcare providers and the community to ensure that we
continuously provide safe medical practices. ■
Hart Family Thanks Harrington
Dear Harrington Hospital Family,
On behalf of my late husband John and children Sean, Meghan, Tim and Laura, I would like to thank you for
touching our hearts with your love and compassion. Not a day went by during John’s recent illness that someone
would ask how he was doing and offer kind words and encouraging support. Each evening I would let John
know who had asked about him and he would smile with those twinkling blue eyes of his. Though he struggled
the past eight months he was always optimistic that he would fight and win his second battle with cancer.
A special thanks to all who contributed to his sick bank extending his FMLA another 3 months. Your support
by extending his sick bank brought him peace of mind.
Thanks to the many of you who honored John and our family by the kind words and many stories you related to
us. It really is a comfort to know that so many of you have fond memories of him that will always live on in our
hearts.
In closing, I wish you all happiness, peace and love.
God Bless,
Linda Hart and Family
