By any measure, fiscal year 2009 was an amazing 

year at Hartford Hospital – marked by increased 

patient activity, improved clinical quality and 

outcomes, and increased care for the poorest, 

most vulnerable in our communities. 

By one particular measure – giving – it was a 

remarkable year. Thousands of profoundly 

generous donors who care deeply about this 

Hospital chose to continue their loyal support 

despite a very challenging economic 

environment. 

Ever mindful that our success doesn’t happen 

without community support, we are pleased 

to have this opportunity to express our 

appreciation for the collective generosity of so 

many – including grateful patients, employees, 

Board members, Corporators and other valued 

volunteers. 

In partnership with their contributions of time, 

talent and gifts, our Medical Staff, nurses and 

support staff were able to strengthen their 

commitment to giving every patient, every 

day, the best possible experience in their 

time of need. 

Gifts reflected in this yearly tribute to donors 

augmented a broad array of innovative 

programs and services that benefit our patients 

by providing: 

n access to best practices that guide our 

physicians, nurses and support staff, in providing 

the highest quality of care to patients. 

n education and training to help our staff keep 

pace with the latest advances in medicine and 

deliver state-of-the-art care. 

n research that enhances treatment options in 

areas ranging from women’s health, cancer and 

cardiology to behavioral health. 

n outreach programs that educate the public in 

disease prevention and management. 

n the acquisition of state-of-the-art medical 

technology that leads to earlier diagnoses and 

quicker healing. 

These are healthcare benefits that our 

community deserves and expects. And they 

enhance the clinical care and expertise of our 

physicians – making Hartford Hospital a tertiary 

facility of national prominence.

This annual tribute to loyal donors and valued 

volunteers is even more special this year as 

we reflect on a remarkable year of giving to 

Hartford Hospital. 

It’s heartwarming to note that during the worst 

economic climate in a generation, thousands of 

donors showed how committed they are to the 

Hospital. Over $9 million in gifts and pledges 

was raised in fiscal year 2009. 

Our Honor Roll of Donors reminds us of the 

many reasons people make gifts and the many 

ways their generosity makes a difference for 

those we serve, every day. 

People give to causes they feel are worthy, 

and results over the past year tell us that 

Hartford Hospital is very worthy, indeed. 

This steadfast support in an extremely difficult 

environment reflects the importance of the 

Hospital in our region. 

How did some donors help? 

n A $1 million gift helped establish our Center 

for Education, Simulation and Innovation to 

enhance the quality of patient care and safety 

through state-of-the-art training. 

n A gift of $500,000 helped launch the 

Depression Initiative at the Institute of Living to 

benefit child and adolescent psychiatry. 

n Our annual Black & Red gala raised more 

than $450,000 to help us make more critical care 

beds available for heart surgery patients. 

n Through its annual golf tournament, 

the Hartford Hospital Auxiliary raised more 

than $200,000 to support the work of our 

Spine Center. 

n A grant of $330,000 helped to make the 

refurbishment of our new Women’s Ambulatory 

Health Services building possible. 

n A gift of $130,000 provided flat-screen 

TVs for each patient room within the ED. 

While these gifts reflect on the prominence of 

our work, the fact is that contributions of all 

sizes are at work every day making a difference 

for those we serve. Many of our programs and 

services would not be possible without gifts 

from thousands of friends and supporters in 

the community.

When Hartford Hospital introduced this state-of-the art teaching robot for robotic surgeries last year, 

it became one of three hospitals in the U.S.—and the only hospital in New England—to use such a system. 

Similar to a ‘co-pilot’ option on an aircraft, the system enables a physician to co-perform robotic surgery 

on complex cases with another physician. “With the teaching robot, we have the opportunity to affect 

patient care further by training more surgeons to perform these minimally-invasive procedures,” 

said Dr. Joseph Wagner, Director of the Hospital’s Robotic Surgical Program.

Hartford Hospital treasures its volunteers. These wonderful men and women have enabled 

nearly every department at the Hospital to work more smoothly and more cost effectively. 

The hard work and creativity shown by the many volunteers over the years have led to 

award-winning programs that benefit our patients and staff. 

In FY2009, 1,104 individuals volunteered at Hartford Hospital and The Institute of Living in 

230 areas. They performed more than 134,500 hours of service, equivalent to 65 full-time 

employees. Based on criteria established by the Independent Sector for Connecticut, these 

hours translate into nearly $3.1 million in salaries. 

The men and women listed on these pages represent active volunteers who have accrued

Ruth Griswold, nurse graduate in 1946, and later a volunteer 

Ruth Griswold – Serving the 

Hospital’s Best Interests 

as a Nurse and Volunteer 

Many people who volunteer later in life choose to do something totally 

unrelated to their life’s work—but don’t count Ruth Griswold among them. 

A 1946 graduate of Hartford Hospital’s School of Nursing, Ruth has spent 

64 years—the last 14 as a volunteer—looking after the best interests of the 

Hospital and its patients. 

She was hired as an assistant head nurse in obstetrics and gynecology, 

and within a few months was named a supervisor. Later, Ruth served in the 

acute surgical areas. 

“It wasn’t long before I found myself in nursing administration and 

doing the budgeting work for all the nursing units,” said Ruth. “In fact, 

when we were between nursing directors, I was sort of a safety net.” 

As part of her duties over the next 20 years, Ruth arranged for in-service 

of new products from vendors—which ultimately led to her move to 

Materials Management. 

“When the vice president I worked for retired, he thought my administrative 

and budgeting skills would benefit that department,” explained 

Ruth. “So my work evolved into becoming active in the value analysis 

process for new products coming into the hospital.” 

Ruth prepared the documentation for all new products, while serving 

on the Hospital’s Value Analysis Committee where she attended meetings 

and prepared the minutes. 

When she decided to retire in 1995, she was asked to continue serving 

on the committee as a volunteer. 

“I came back because I wanted to have something to do and stay close 

to the hospital,” admits Ruth, whose husband, Edwin, interned at Hartford 

Hospital in preparation for practicing general medicine. Dr. Griswold passed 

away in 1990. 

As a volunteer three days a week, Ruth still does the documentation 

and filing for the value analysis process, while supporting the purchasing 

division and the vendor access process. 

“It’s a pleasure to be part of a team of people who are so dedicated 

to saving money for the hospital,” she added. 

Ruth, who has accrued more than 13,000 hours of volunteer work at the 

Hospital, is also a lifetime member of Hartford Hospital’s Auxiliary. Away 

from her volunteer work, she enjoys reading, collecting art and Swarovski 

crystal and attending antique shows. She is also a member of the Swarovski 

Society, the Smithsonian Institution and Colonial Williamsburg. 

“I used to love horseback riding, when we had show horses, and 

roller-blading,” said Ruth, “but I had to give them up long ago.” 

Don’t look for her to give up volunteering any time soon, though.

The 1854 Society recognizes individuals 

whose planned gifts have been received or 

will someday accrue to Hartford Hospital. 

Planned gifts include bequests made through 

testamentary devices, such as wills, retirement 

plans, and revocable trusts, as well as lifetime 

gifts that provide income to donors and their 

beneficiaries. 

Life income gifts, such as charitable gift 

annuities, charitable remainder trusts, and 

the Hospital’s Pooled Income Fund, typically 

involve the transfer of gift assets, immediate 

tax advantages and continuing income streams 

to the donor, with future distributions to 

the Hospital for its general or specific 

charitable purposes. 

Thoughtful gift planning offers each person 

the opportunity to make an endowed gift 

that will continue to help the Hospital for 

generations to come. We are deeply grateful 

to members of the 1854 Society and especially 

appreciative of their thoughtful commitment 

to the future financial well being of Hartford

in minimally invasive 

surgery. 

More than 800 generous patrons celebrated a delightful Black & Red gala at 

The Bushnell in Hartford in January 2009. 

In doing so, they helped pave the way for training future generations of 

surgeons in minimally invasive techniques – which, for many patients, will 

mean less trauma, reduced risk and shorter, easier recoveries. 

The event generated more than $436,000 in proceeds to help create the 

Minimally Invasive Surgical Institute (MISI), which is attracting the brightest 

and most talented students, residents and attending physicians to train with 

leading edge technologies and among exceptional staff. 

“The institute is an extraordinary benefit for everybody,” said Moh 

Cheema, M.D., an endovascular surgeon. “For the physicians, for the 

hospital, for patients who will experience better 

care, and for the community as a whole.” 

Hartford Hospital surgeons have pioneered advances in minimally 

invasive surgery over the past 20 years and now do one of the largest 

volumes of minimally invasive surgery in the country. 

“There are only three or four places in the world that have the level of 

expertise we have,” said Joseph “Peppie” Wagner, M.D., a urologic surgeon 

who ranks among an elite handful of physicians in the country with 

experience in robotic surgery for prostate cancer. “MISI was the next logical 

step in the evolution of this process.” 

With MISI, surgeons have high-technology laparoscopic simulators, 

robotic simulators, and inanimate models with which to train. Such 

capability also goes a long way in continuing to recruit top-notch physicians 

and residents to Hartford Hospital. 

To continue to be a leader in this area, “we needed an institute like this 

to maintain our skills and develop them even further,” added Steven 

Shichman, M.D., who was among the first in the country to perform 

laparoscopic nephrectomies in patients with kidney cancer. “That’s exactly 

what training labs like this are for, and we’re able to do it right here at 

Hartford.” 

Later in 2009, MISI became a major component of Hartford Hospital’s 

Center for Education, Research and Simulation – a research, training 

and simulation center that is being established as the only center of its 

kind in the Northeast. 

Support for the 2009 gala came from Hartford’s civic leaders, corporations, medical professionals 

and generous patrons. The more than 100 sponsors included the Title Sponsor, Connecticut Surgical 

Group, and Presenting Sponsors: the Medical Staff at Hartford Hospital, Bank of America, EMC2 and 

Travelers. 

The gala’s Medical Staff Advisory Committee was co-chaired by Orlando Kirton, M.D., Director of 

the Department of Surgery, and Dr. Shichman. Kevin J. Cunningham of the Bank of America served

“It’s hard to describe our feelings for the wonderful care that was given to Dan and to 

our family at such a lonely time in our lives. We ended up feeling that Hartford Hospital 

was a place that really cared about us when we felt so down and out.” 

With those words, Jeriann Hunter summed up her family’s feelings after experiencing 

a most painful tragedy in 2008—losing a loving husband and father. Out of that tragedy 

grew relationships rooted in dignity, respect, compassion, and a spirit of giving. 

Jeriann’s husband, Dan, was brought to Hartford Hospital with severe trauma 

following a motorcycle accident. He was placed in C9I, the neurosurgical intensive care 

unit, in the care of the Hospital’s neurotrauma team, including physician Joe Portoreiko, 

M.D., and nurses Kathryn Ruszczyk and Patty Veronneau. 

For two weeks, the team performed dramatic maneuvers to stabilize Dan – and also 

ensured that the family was engaged in decision-making regarding his care. After doing 

everything that could be done, though, Dan passed away on October 29, 2008. 

Dan’s daughter Chelsea later said that although the family didn’t always want to hear 

what Dr. Portoreiko was saying, “he provided the truth in a compassionate and caring 

way.” Jeriann added that Dr. Portoreiko made a point to “be with us as much as he 

possibly could, even showing up when he wasn’t on duty.” 

While Dan was a patient on C9I, many family members and friends would come and 

go, not wanting to leave the unit. Kathryn and Patty supported them by helping to 

manage the family dynamics and looking after their needs—including accommodations 

and meals. 

“Everyone at the hospital showed us a lot of caring and respect,” said Dan’s son, D.J. 

“Hartford Hospital was definitely a place where we wanted to be with our father— 

the best hospital, the best care.” 

Over the next year, the actions and support of the team nourished a special bond 

between the Hunter family and Hartford Hospital. 

“This is a place where we feel at home, where we feel safe and where we feel close to 

Dan,” added Jeriann. 

In appreciation of and in tribute to that bond, the Hunter family made a generous gift 

last year to help refurbish the family lounge on C9I. Their lasting legacy will make a 

difference by providing a warmer, more inviting and refreshed area to aid in comforting 

other patient families facing some of the most devastating news in their lifetime.

Programs, Patients Benefit from 

Dollars Raised Through a Variety 

of Community Events 

Community fundraisers are a vital part of Hartford Hospital’s fund-raising efforts, 

providing much-needed assistance to many programs and services and, ultimately, 

to the patients we serve. 

That strong support continued last year when the efforts of families, civic groups, 

companies, employees, and other organizations provided welcomed donations of 

more than $500,000 to the Hospital. 

The events were limited only by the imagination – from cut-a-thons and golf 

tournaments to bagel sales and daffodil parties just to name a few. 

One of the more interesting efforts was turned in by Nicholas Caminiti, a 16-yearold 

junior at Farmington High School. Seeking adventure, a physical challenge and 

the chance to raise funds for the Helen & Harry Gray Cancer Center – Avon, Nicholas 

rode his bicycle from Charleston, S.C., to San Diego, Calif. 

“I heard about these organized bicycle adventures and thought it would be a lot 

of fun,” said Nicholas, who rode with a group called Apogee Adventures. 

In preparation for the ride, Nicholas sent personal letters to friends and family, 

asking for their support. His ride honored Allyson Caputo, a young woman battling 

ovarian cancer and wife of Andrew Caputo, an orthopedic surgeon with Orthopedic 

Associates of Hartford. 

Two years ago, Dr. Caputo entered the La Ruta de los Conquistadores, an intense, 

four-day 221-mile mountain bike race across Costa Rica. Dedicating his effort to 

Allyson, he turned his challenge into a “Race for Cancer” to benefit the Helen & Harry 

Gray Cancer Center – Avon. 

“I know Dr. Caputo and Allyson well,” added Nicholas. “He’s kind of a mentor, 

and they both were my inspiration.” 

Nicholas’s 2,700-mile journey with 14 other bicyclists began in late June and took 

six weeks, riding about 85 miles a day. “The hardest part was riding through the 

desert in 100-plus degree heat,” he recalled. 

And when the city of San Diego came into view in early August, “I felt absolutely 

fantastic,” shared Nicholas.

In February 2009, Dan and Alice Ferraina presented Hartford Hospital with a check for 

$130,000 to purchase flat screen televisions for each patient room within the Emergency 

Department (ED). 

Since then, Dan has received many calls at home from friends and others who used 

the Hospital’s Emergency Department and wanted to express their thanks to them. 

“One man called after his wife was in the ED and wanted to say how much it meant 

to them, how much it improved their experience,” said Dan. “Having an impact on the 

lives of so many people—that’s the nicest part of having made the gift, not the 

recognition or the size of the gift.” 

Indeed, the televisions have made an extraordinary difference in the lives of the more 

than 95,000 visitors to the ED over the past year, with a comforting, familiar distraction 

for patients. 

“It’s like giving additional medication for patients under stress in the emergency 

room,” said Dan. “It takes their minds off themselves and puts it on something else.”

me that they’ve been instrumental 

in helping patients 

stay occupied and entertained

Dan, himself, has a pretty 

good idea what their gift 

means. In November 2008, he 

arrived at Hartford Hospital’s 

ED with chest pains. His 

condition required a complex 

quadruple bypass surgery to 

repair his heart. He recovered 

well from the procedure and 

was subsequently discharged. 

Struck by the high-quality, personal care he received throughout his stay—care that 

transcended the Emergency Department and a number of floors within the Hospital— 

Dan decided to “give back” in honor of the staff members who provided top-notch 

medical care and comfort to him during his experience. 

“I was so thankful for the love and unbelievable aptitude of the staff in caring for 

me, I wanted to donate something to show my appreciation,” shared Dan. 

When told of the idea of putting televisions in the patient rooms in the ED, Dan saw 

it as “a great opportunity.” 

“We couldn’t be more thrilled about seeing that happen,” added Dan. “I love 

helping people, so this has meant a lot to us.”

Reynolds’ Gift Bridges Gap 

in Pediatric Depression

Rod and Janice Reynolds believe so strongly in the valuable services the Institute of Living (IOL) 

provides residents of all ages in our region that they made a generous gift to bring attention to the 

Institute in support of programs to benefit children and youth. 

They made their gift, a lead gift, to the IOL’s Depression Initiative in the hope that it will benefit 

adolescent psychiatry. 

“Our focus has always been on children and youth,” said Janice. “What attracted our support 

are the many mental health issues with young people today, so many on medications, so many with 

emotional problems and so many being diagnosed. These issues seem to be starting at an earlier 

age than most people realize.” 

Studies indicate that depression is a highly-prevalent disorder that affects 15-20 percent of 

children and teenagers. Yet very little research has attempted to 

understand neural dysfunction in pediatric depression, or to 

identify biomarkers that predict how well depressed youth 

respond to different treatments. 

“We live in a society where people don’t hesitate to mention 

that their child has a physical ailment and goes to the hospital for 

treatment,” added Rod. “On the other hand, they are reluctant to 

mention that their child is suffering from and being treated for 

depression – and insurance doesn’t treat it very nicely, either. 

“That’s our motivation, to help create awareness, enhance 

clinical services to treat today’s problems, and have an impact on 

research to discover new treatments for the future.” 

Janice added, “I think people are more willing to support areas 

benefiting people with physical challenges because the pain is 

obvious, but they don’t realize that emotional issues also cause 

real pain in people’s lives, too.” 

Their gift is helping to bridge the knowledge gap in pediatric 

depression by integrating the expert clinical services already 

offered at the IOL with its cutting-edge neuroscience research 

infrastructure. 

This integration will establish a research-based clinic for 

pediatric mood disorder care by embedding research staff within 

existing clinical services and support a series of clinically-meaningful studies of pediatric depression 

using fMRI, genetic and other neuroscience techniques. These projects will evaluate new treatments 

and work toward realizing a “personalized medicine” approach to care. 

The Reynolds, a local altruistic couple, agreed to share their story as “another way to make a 

gift” and encourage others to join this initiative and enable the benefits of this initiative to be 

even greater. 

Giving back to the community is nothing new for the Reynolds. Some years ago, they created a 

therapeutic horseback-riding program called Equistrides. At one point, the year-round program 

hosted 160 riders a week. The total different disabilities represented by the riders numbered more 

than 100. 

“We had a lot of riders with emotional and cognitive disorders, some sent to us from the IOL,” 

noted Janice. “So we got to see a lot of different combinations of symptoms in children of all ages. 

We became more aware of the large number of adolescents needing care, and more aware of the 

great work being done at the IOL that could help meet those needs.” 

Through their gift to the Depression Initiative, Rod and Janice are hoping that many more 

people will begin to see the needs, too.

“I am proud to support Hartford Hospital through the Employees Annual Campaign 

[which] has funded hospital growth in so many important areas that directly touch the 

patient and the Hartford community. A simple way to do the right thing!” 

With those words, Lynn Deasy, Quality Management, joined scores of other 

employees in support of Hartford Hospital’s 2009 Employees Annual Campaign. 

Lynn and her co-workers throughout the Hospital and the Institute of Living (IOL) 

contributed more than $175,000 to the campaign, a whopping 25% increase over 2008. 

“When a large number of employees contribute to this campaign, our other funding 

requests are enhanced as others see how generously we support our own programs,” 

said Sue Wright, Chairman of the 2009 Employees Annual Campaign Committee. 

“We are all part of a great team, almost 7,000 people doing their best every day to 

make us the healthcare leader in our region.” 

The 23-member Committee assisted in more than 100 informational presentations 

through the Hospital and the IOL, sessions that resonated with many employees as 

participation increased for the fourth straight year. 

At the heart of many employee gifts was the genuine desire to support Hartford 

Hospital’s programs and services that directly affect the care that patients receive. 

“I truly appreciate the opportunity to give to the employee annual fund…because 

I value the excellence in care that we provide,” said Melissa Matolina, IOL Nursing. 

“I am proud to work in an institution that impacts people's lives in such a positive way.”

After breast cancer took her life in 2007, 

Sandy Peszynski’s husband and children 

established a foundation in her name to 

support organizations that were essential 

during her 25-year battle with the disease. 

They collected funds from many different 

efforts, including general donations at their 

hardware and garden center and a portion of 

admissions to their “Pumpkintown” fall display 

to donate to Hartford Hospital’s Partnership for

Breast Cancer Survivorship 

Program Gets Boost from the 


When cancer patients become cancer survivors, they face a difficult transition 

filled with concerns about physical changes in their bodies, worries their illness 

may return and financial difficulties relating to care. 

But thanks to a three-year, $150,000 grant from the Lance Armstrong 

Foundation last year, Hartford Hospital’s breast cancer survivors have a unique 

resource to address such concerns and help them adjust. 

With support from the Lance Armstrong Foundation, the staff at the 

Helen & Harry Gray Cancer Center has developed a Survivorship Patient Navigator 

Program to provide patients and families with a treatment summary, as well 

as a care plan to address their concerns. 

“Cancer survivors have unique needs that extend beyond their active medical 

care, and addressing these needs is critical in helping them lead fulfilling lives,” 

said Andrew L. Salner, M.D., Director of the Helen & Harry Gray Cancer Center. 

“By providing specialized survivorship care, we can reduce post-treatment anxiety 

and improve the quality of life and well-being of our breast cancer survivors.” 

Through the survivorship program, a nurse practitioner meets with breast 

cancer survivors and their caregivers to provide a package tailored to their specific 

needs. During visits, the nurse practitioner provides each patient with: 

n a treatment summary that provides detailed information about 

each patient’s specific breast cancer treatments; 

n a care plan that outlines information on healthy living, and 

symptoms of recurrence and potential late effects of treatment; 

n assistance with coordination of care between primary care 

physicians, medical/radiation oncologists and other specialists; 

n information about available support programs, wellness programs 

and referrals to other healthcare professionals and services 

as need; and 

n education and assistance with setting goals for healthy living. 

Hartford Hospital was one of only eight recipients – and the only cancer center 

in New England – to receive a national community grant from the Lance 

Armstrong Foundation last year to develop the program. 

“We are honored to be one of the few cancer centers in the country selected 

for this grant to help breast cancer survivors lead healthy and fulfilling lives,” 

added Dr. Salner. “We look forward to working with the Foundation to develop 

models of care that could be used successfully elsewhere in the U.S.”

“The two noblest professions are nursing and teaching.” 

With that statement, Howard Fromson provided a bright glimpse into the philanthropic interests that 

he shares with his wife, Sandy. 

Through several experiences at Hartford Hospital, they have come to appreciate the “extraordinary care” 

provided by the staff. Last year, following one of those events, the Fromsons continued their longtime support 

by making a wonderfully generous gift to directly benefit the Hospital’s nurses. 

“Nurses are the heart and soul of the hospital,” said Sandy, “always on the front line, 24-7, often required 

to make quick-second decisions. And the nursing skills we saw this last time were consistent with what we had 

experienced before, coupled with warmth and understanding especially for families.” 

Those skills came to light late in 2008 when Howard fell on an 

escalator and hit his head. He was attended to at an out of town 

hospital, including a CAT scan that indicated he was fine. But 

weeks later, he noticed changes in his speech and reaction times. 

“Something didn’t feel right, so my son brought me to the 

emergency room at Hartford Hospital,” explained Howard. 

“I was immediately diagnosed with a subdural hematoma and 

underwent surgery the next day. Dr. [Paul] Schwartz performed 

the most miraculous and straight-forward surgery.” 

In Sandy’s eyes, Dr. Schwartz, a neurosurgeon, is the epitome 

of what one would want in a surgeon. “He didn’t see Howard as 

just someone who required surgery, he took the time to get to 

know him as a person,” she added. “And he learned that Howard, 

at 87, worked full time and was an artist, inventor and 

businessman. Dr. Schwartz’s skill, care and thoughtfulness really 

impressed me.” 

The Fromsons also were impressed with the partnership in caring 

attitude exhibited by the staff. “They understood that it took the 

whole family to get well again,” said Sandy. “As busy as they were 

taking care of things on the medical end, they treated everyone 

with care and understanding – which was especially appreciated 

by family members in angst.” 

In what Sandy described as a new “lease on life,” Howard’s 

recovery went very well. He returned to work full-time and 

enjoyed their annual family vacation last Christmas, which included 

all 18 family members. “It was the best family get-together ever,” 

she reported.

Faced with arguably the worst economic climate for fundraising 

in 2009, Hartford Hospital turned to leadership and loyalty to 

weather the storm and actually grow its Annual Campaign. 

Guided by co-chairs Paul Mersereau and Brian Clemow, the 

18-member Annual Campaign Committee rose to the challenge 

and helped raise more than $1.2 million, a nearly 2% increase 

over the year before. 

That growth stands in contradiction to anecdotal information 

indicating that similar campaigns around the country had 

trended downward as much as 30%. 

At the heart of that remarkable performance were more than 

3,800 loyal donors who made gifts to the 2009 Campaign in 

support of a wide variety of programs and services at Hartford 

Hospital, ranging from areas of greatest need to research, 

education and training. 

So, there was plenty to celebrate in October when Hartford 

Hospital President & CEO Elliot Joseph and his wife, Carolyn, 

again hosted an event to recognize the leadership of volunteers 

and the loyalty of donors whose meaningful contributions 

helped the 2009 Annual Campaign top $1 million for the fourth 

straight year.

IN MEMORIAM 

With each year’s reflection, Hartford Hospital mourns the loss of close friends who have passed away 

during the year. Beloved by the institution they served and by their community, each gave in his or her own way. 

We take this moment to honor and thank Mabel C. Donnelly, Dorothy Y. “Yummy” Graulty, 

Harry J. Gray, Robert A. “Bubba” Hollander, and Grace S. Webb. 

Mabel C. Donnelly, Ph.D 

Mabel C. Donnelly always felt a deep, abiding loyalty 

to Hartford Hospital and the Institute of Living (IOL). 

Her late husband, Dr. John Donnelly, served as 

Psychiatrist-in-Chief of the IOL from 1965 to 1979. 

As a member of the Hospital’s Auxiliary, Mabel 

volunteered both at Hartford Hospital and at the IOL. 

She became a Corporator at the Hospital in 2001 and 

a member of the IOL’s Ambassador Council in 2005. 

Through the years, Mabel was a generous donor to 

the IOL and a member of the 1854 Society for including 

Hartford Hospital in her estate plan. In serving others, 

she was a president of the Hartford Shelter for Women 

and was active on many community boards, including 

Planned Parenthood, the Visiting Nurses Association, 

Mortensen Library of 

the University of Hartford, 

and Hartford Neighborhood 

Centers. Mabel 

earned a Ph. D. from 

Harvard/Radcliffe and was 

a Fellow of the American 

Council of Learned 

Societies and a member 

of Phi Beta Kappa. She 

Mabel Donnelly 

authored several books 

and many articles and was a popular lecturer. She also 

taught at the University of Connecticut and St. Joseph 

College. The family requested that memorial 

contributions be sent to the Institute of Living. 

Dorothy Y. ‘Yummy’ Graulty 

Dorothy Y. Graulty, known by family and friends 

as “Yummy,” was active in many civic organizations 

and charities, not the least of which was her beloved 

Hartford Hospital where she volunteered for 27 years 

in the Emergency Room. She also served as a Corporator 

for 33 years, earning praise from the Hospital’s 

administration as exemplifying what a ‘good’ Corporator 

should be. “Yummy was such an ardent supporter that 

she would not hesitate to challenge or critique if she 

felt it would improve the hospital,” said John Meehan, 

former president and CEO of Hartford Hospital. 

“She always had the best interest of the hospital in 

mind.” Yummy once said, “There is no better place 

to give than Hartford Hospital,” – and backed that 

statement with years of generous support, including a 

leadership gift to the 150th Anniversary Campaign. 

She was a founding member of the Hospital’s Planned 

Giving Committee and a member of the 1854 Society. 

A lifelong resident of Greater Hartford, Yummy 

supported and was a tireless volunteer for many 

community projects and a champion of arts and heritage 

organizations. She served as a volunteer with the 

Junior League of Hartford, was a past president of the 

Resident’s Association 

at Duncaster, and 

chaired several 

Duncaster committees.

Harry J. Gray 

With the passing of Harry J. Gray, 

America lost a true hero of the greatest 

generation; Greater Hartford lost a 

staunch advocate and generous 

benefactor; and Hartford Hospital lost 

a dear friend, a valued mentor and 

trusted advisor. 

Harry and his wife, Helen, for many 

years demonstrated their enormous concern for 

healthcare, education and the arts in the region. 

Together they made what Harry often referred to 

as “investment contributions.” 

Hartford Hospital benefited enormously from 

the Grays’ “investments” of time, talent and 

treasure for more than four decades. Harry served 

on the Hospital’s Board of Directors from 1972 to 

1986 and continued on the Advisory Board and 

as a Corporator. 

“We have been privileged to be the beneficiary 

of the generous support and passionate involvement 

of both Mr. and Mrs. Gray,” said Elliot Joseph, 

President and CEO of Hartford Hospital, “and 

certainly Harry’s passing was a loss for this 

institution as well as for our entire region.” 

The Grays’ most generous “investment” in Hartford 

Hospital came in the late 1980s when they “simply made 

a decision to act before [cancer] touched another person 

we love.” Their decision to give was an emotional one, 

for they both knew first-hand the devastating effects 

cancer has on a family, each having lost a parent to the 

dreaded disease. 

Their remarkable commitment helped Hartford 

Hospital realize a long-standing vision to create a central 

location where cancer patients and their families could 

receive all the medical and support services they need. 

That commitment resulted in the creation of the Helen 

& Harry Gray Cancer Center, which was dedicated in 

1990. At the dedication, Harry emphatically stated, 

“Let’s replace fear with hope, suffering with comfort, 

and death with survival.” 

Deroy C. Thomas, Chairman of the Hartford Hospital 

Board of the Directors at the time, called the center 

“high-touch care” and “a striking symbol of the changes 

to be made at the hospital.” 

Since then, the Helen & Harry Gray Center has 

become nationally recognized for education, support, 

excellence in care delivery, and research.

benefactor who ensured our focus on doing the best 

that we can for all whom we have the privilege of 

serving,” said Andrew L. Salner, M.D., Director of the 

Helen & Harry Gray Cancer Center. “Patients and staff 

alike were inspired by his commitment to the care that 

we provide every day. He was a valued mentor and 

friend to us all.” 

At the time the Grays engaged in the life of the 

Helen & Harry Gray Cancer Center, their hope was that 

“the superb center, treatment and care programs will 

be maintained and enlarged.” That hope was realized in 

2008 with the opening of the Helen & Harry Gray Cancer 

Center—Avon, thanks in part to another remarkably 

generous commitment from the Grays. How pleased 

they were that the excellence of the Hospital’s cancer 

program would be extended to patients living in the 

Farmington Valley. 

“That commitment,” said Dr. Salner, “was yet 

another example of how the Grays’ exceptional 

philanthropy over the years has improved the quality 

of life in our region.” 


Robert A. ‘Bubba’ Hollander 

Robert A. “Bubba” Hollander, co-owner of Hartford 

Distributors for 30 years, served Hartford Hospital as a 

Corporator from 1998 to 2008. Along with other 

members of the Hollander family, he was devoted to 

many causes at the Hospital, particularly its Palliative 

Care, Diabetes Lifecare and Transplant programs. 

Their generous support, including a leadership gift 

to the 150th Anniversary Campaign, helped build 

awareness of the importance of organ and tissue 

donations. Upon his 

passing, the Hollander 

family extended a special 

thank you to Dr. David 

Hull and his transplant 

team at Hartford Hospital 

and encouraged 

donations in Bubba’s 

memory to the Hospital’s 

Transplant Program.

Born in Norfolk, Va., 

he was a proud graduate 

of the University of Virginia. 

He had a passion for racquetball and golf and, at 

one time, was the senior amateur racquetball champion 

in the United States. All who knew him remember 

Bubba as a unique, loving, generous, witty, and 

charismatic friend. 

Grace S. Webb 

Last June’s graduation ceremony at the Institute 

of Living’s schools that bear her name included fond 

remembrances of Grace S. Webb, along with the 

recognition of the remarkable achievements of the 

schools’ graduates. Grace’s husband, William Logan 

Webb, Jr., M.D., became Psychiatrist-in-Chief at the 

Institute in 1985, and over the years she became 

increasingly committed to helping children there, 

particularly those in need of special education. In 1991, 

the Institute recognized her contributions by dedicating 

their special education program to her and renaming 

it The Grace S. Webb School. The honor was later 

extended to the opening of two satellite Webb Schools 

in Cheshire and Bloomfield. “For many years, Grace 

generated such good will and positive feelings for the 

school and enhancements of our program,” said Harold 

Schwartz, M.D., Vice President, Behavioral Health and 

Psychiatrist-in-Chief at the Institute. “She rarely asked 

for help, but always gave generously of her time and 

energy to others.”
