M. Sc. (Engg.) Programme
Guidelines on Screening and Course Work
This programme was introduced in HBNI essentially for those employees who have graduated from
BARC Training School prior to setting up of HBNI. However, many employees who are not graduates
of Training School have shown interest in enrolment for this programme. Course work requirements
are as follows:
• For graduates of TS: Interview is mandatory. A few advanced courses to tackle obsolescence arising
out of the fact that the candidate graduated from TS a few years back.
• For non-TS graduates: Written Test for screening before interview is mandatory. One-year course
work equivalent to 60 credits is also mandatory. Additional course work may be specified by
M.Sc.(Engg.) Committee.
Ph. D. Programme
• For TS graduates: Interview is mandatory. Doctoral Committee may specify additional course
work. However, for TS applicants failing in one or more subjects in the OCES programme, the
Dean Academic needs to ensure that adequate course work in these subjects is recommended OR
certify that these are NOT relevant to the applicant’s topic of research without compromising on
the requirement of ensuring broad based knowledge to the applicant.
• For non-TS graduates
- A screening test followed by interview is mandatory for all non-TS graduates. Those selected
as JRF against advertisement will not have to go through another selection procedure as it is
expected that selection process at all CIs follow academic rigour required by HBNI.
- For candidates who have acquired M.Sc. by course work, one-year course work equivalent to
60 credits is mandatory.
- M.Sc. (by research) applicants to the Ph. D. programme should be critically examined. Such
candidates generally will have to undertake one year course work in the Training School even if
they are employees in a CI. However, in case an individual having experience in research for a
few years registers for a research based degree and has extensive experience on certain subjects
because of his/her long experience he/she can be given exemption from attending the courses
about which he/she already has an extensive knowledge base. Modalities for exemption could
be decided by the Standing Committees existing at BARC, IGCAR, RRCAT and VECC.
Modalities could include: (i) Direct exemption if the work done by the student is well known,
and/or (ii) Viva Voce by expert committees for subjects for which exemption is to be granted.
This should be clearly recorded in the communication to be mailed to Dean, HBNI for
enrolment of the student.
- Exemption of course work can be recommended for those non-TS applicants who have done
M.Tech./M. Phil in relevant subject. Doctoral Committee, however, may prescribe advanced
courses to ensure broad based knowledge.
Enrolment Form: Ph.D. / M.Sc. Engg. (For DAE Employees from CI’s) 5/6

• On successful completion of course work, the candidate shall appear for an oral general
comprehensive examination to be conducted by the monitoring/doctoral committee. If his/her
performance is satisfactory, the monitoring/doctoral committee shall permit the candidate to
pursue/continue research towards thesis. Else, it may give specific suggestions and time period
(maximum six months) to the candidate for preparation before reappearing for the oral general
comprehensive examination. If a candidate fails to qualify in two attempts, his/her registration for
Ph.D. shall be cancelled.
For both M.Sc.(Engg.) and Ph.D. Programme
• Methodologies such as self-study courses, theme papers/ assignments etc. may also be used in lieu
of conventional course work wherever considered appropriate and the candidate examined as
deemed fit.
• Dean Academic should forward all relevant details on above to HBNI office for record.
