HOUSING
Houses for British families in the JFC Brunssum area are made up of
hirings. These are properties leased from local landlords /housing
9
associations. The housing is administered in the normal way, by the UK
military authorities including march in and out.
Houses are built in the Dutch style and tend to be open plan on the
ground floor. Kitchens can be substantially smaller than you may be
used to, staircases are generally steeper and narrower making access
to the first floor and the attic (where one exists) difficult for bulky items.
You should make your removal company aware of this fact and
suggest that they arrange a hoist so that bulky items can be lifted to
the first floor via a window. Additionally Dutch houses generally lack
built in wardrobes so remember to request these from supply .
Helpful hints and tips from members of the Brunssum
community
If arriving in the winter please allow for the expense of purchasing
winter tyres. Although not compulsory in the Netherlands they are in
Germany and being located so close to the border you may find
yourself in Germany without realising.
It is advised to obtain car insurance in the Netherlands as the Dutch
registration do not accept or recognise most UK insurers. It is slightly
more expensive, but you don‘t pay road tax in the Netherlands.
Most people use the ABN AMRO bank for their insurance, but there
is a reputable insurer also on camp.
All cars require an APK (Dutch equivalent of an MOT) for registration
here, so ensure your car is fully functional prior to departing to
ensure there aren‘t any unexpected extra costs.
Consider buying a Sat Nav if you don‘t already have one.
Be aware Dutch banks charge for the withdrawal of money from
the ATM’s, some charge higher amounts than others.
Check your mobile roaming network charges for Europe prior to
leaving the UK as it can be quite costly. Dutch mobiles are
available from local shops and are a useful inexpensive alternative.
Plug extensions and adapters are cheaper to buy in the UK so bring
plenty!
In general (and depending on your tastes), Dutch tea isn‘t as good
as British tea so bring plenty of tea bags!
If you like squash, bring plenty of it as the Dutch version is more like
a syrup.
You can use the registry on camp to post mail back to the UK, so
bring some UK stamps with you.
Second hand furniture shops are known as Kringloops, there are
many around Sittard, Brunssum and Heerlen. Ask in the HIVE for
details.
On the first Monday of every month at 1200 the Chemical Factory
at Stein have a chemical alarm practice. Do not be worried it is
only for exercise purposes only.
