H- F PARK DISTRICT MISSION STATEMENT: 

To improve the quality of life for the residents of the 

Homewood-Flossmoor Park District community through 

exceptional recreational opportunities, facilities and parks 

while practicing environmental stewardship. 

BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS 

The Board of Commissioners meets at 7:30 p.m. on the third Tuesday of 

each month at the Goldberg Center. Meetings are at 8 p.m. during June, 

July and August. Its members are: Steve Johnson, Sue Bertram, 

Peter Camin, Vice President Pat Nevins and President Bob Haderlein. 

DEAR NEIGHBORS 

It seems 

that 

lately all 

we hear 

about in 

the news 

is the 

decline 

of the 

economy 

and the gloom and doom associated 

with the stock market and business 

closures. Here at the park district we 

want to be sure that you are still able 

to experience the benefits of your tax 

dollars at work. During stressful times, 

taking time for fun can be even more 

important. Experts tell us that exercise, 

enjoying the outdoors and spending 

time with family can reduce stress 

and improve our overall health. So 

when you make your “to do list” don’t 

forget to include recreational activities. 

If you are tightening your home 

budget, remember that the H-F Park 

District still offers many free and affordable 

options for you and your family. 

The most obvious, and often 

overlooked, are our parks and playgrounds. 

Getting back to the roots of 

parks and recreation, the H-F Park District 

maintains 33 parks scattered 

throughout Homewood and Flossmoor. 

Over the years, park districts have 

branched out into a variety of facilities 

— such as fitness centers, ice arenas, 

golf courses, community centers and 

swimming pools — but neighborhood 

parks are where recreation got started. 

I encourage you to take advantage of 

these outdoor opportunities, to play on 

a playground, get in a quick game of 

tennis or just go for a walk in a 

natural setting. 

The H-F Park District has several specialty 

parks, including Millennium and 

Rover’s Run. Millennium Park has a 

traditional playground as well as a 

water playground. As we enjoy those 

hot fall days after the outdoor pools 

are closed, remember that the Splash 

Pad is still open and free to H-F 

residents. Rover’s Run is located at the 

south end of Apollo Park and includes 

social and recreational opportunities 

for both owners and dogs. To enjoy 

Rover’s Run, residents pay only $15 per 

year. 

We also offer your family low-cost or 

free programs and special events, such 

as our 3rd Annual Family Campout 

(p. 5). Join us as we transform Flossmoor 

Park into an overnight campground, 

complete with a movie, dinner, 

campfire, stories, games and more, all 

for a very reasonable fee. The semi-annual 

fishing derby will be held in October 

and — thanks to our sponsors — 

this event is now free. Also in October, 

please join us again as we transform 

Irwin Park into a winter wonderland 

with the South Side Snow Rail Jam, 

showcasing the best in snowboarding 

with exhibitions, games and raffle 

prizes. Last year’s free event received 

rave reviews from kids and parents 

alike, and we are excited to offer it 

again in 2009 (p. 6). 

The park district also offers four 

Halloween-themed events that are free 

or low cost. Halloween Happenings on 

Oct. 31 is the park district’s annual indoor 

Halloween celebration and is free 

for children of all ages. The canine 

companion event to Halloween 

Happenings is Haunted Hounds at 

Rover’s Run, offering costume and 

other contests for dogs and owners. 

The Ice Arena invites you to a spooky 

skating party on Oct. 25. Finally, one of 

our most popular new events is Spirits 

of the Oaks at Irons Oaks. 

No need to drive to another community 

for a haunted house, be brave and 

dare to explore the haunted woods at 

Irons Oaks in the dark. Our leaders will 

give you the spookiest tour in town!

affordable activities and events scattered 

throughout this brochure. I hope

live entertainment, music and food, vendor booths, kid activities, 

games and contests, and Homewood’s annual

can support area rescue groups 

and shop specialty dog-care 

products, ranging from organic 

dog foods to the trendiest pet 

accessories. Kids activities will 

include dog-themed crafts and 

games, face painting and bouncers. 

Contests will include a dog 

treat stacking race, the annual 

Homewood hot dog eating challenge, 

and Frisbee throwing 

matches for the bi-peds. Downtown 

Homewood’s favorite 

restaurants and grills will serve up 

this summer’s hottest recipes.

Flossmoor Fest takes places in downtown Flossmoor (Sterling 

Ave. & Flossmoor Rd.). This one-day event features music, 

food, children’s activities and the Flossmoor 5K! 

VILLAGE OF HOMEWOOD’S FALL FEST

Hickory Road from Dixie Highway to Martin Ave. will be lined 

with restaurants and grills serving their favorite fall recipes. 

Activities this year include a petting zoo, tractor rides and 

races, horse-drawn wagon rides through the downtown, an 

outdoor movie, face-painting and pumpkin decorating. The 

annual chili cook-off and open tasting will be held during Fall 

Fest, along with a bean-bag tournament to benefit the Cancer 

Support Center.

Before Flossmoor Fest, start your day with the last race of the 

H-F 5K Circuit, the Flossmoor 5K, using the Champion Chip

is requested.

Looking for an adventure? Join us on a trip to Devil’s Lake 

State Park in Wisconsin for a weekend of camping and adventure!

Rover’s Run 

is a Cook 

Countyregulated, 

membership-only dog park, located at 

191st St. and Center Ave. This 3-acre park features a large 

fenced area for running, a separate fenced-off training 

area with its own entrance and an owner-doggie drinking 

fountain. Membership is open to residents and non-residents. 

For membership info, visit the Goldberg Center or 

Irwin Center. A copy of the dog’s current vaccinations, 

plus expiration dates must accompany the application before 

you may receive the dog tag. The annual fee is $15 R / 

$25 NR. Dogs must be fully immunized, de-wormed, licensed 

and wearing tags; the membership dog tag must 

be worn on your dog’s collar at all times in the park. Dog 

owners are responsible for their dogs’ actions and following 

the rules. Cook County will conduct random spots 

checks to ensure only members are using the dog park. 

Individuals not in compliance will be cited. Note: H-F Park 

District and Cook County Animal Control personnel will 

randomly check the park. The Homewood Police Department 

may ticket for lack of membership tags.

For more than 30 years, the H-F Park District has been 

providing an introduction to school for the littlest learners. 

Our caring instructors combine a learning-through-play 

philosophy and a well-rounded curriculum. Preschool is held at

PRE-BALLET & TAP 

Get introduced to dance through classical music, creativity 

play and fun exercise. Children will also experiment with

BALLET I 

A wonderful mixture of a number of arts: dancing, music, 

drama, poetry and painting. It is highly disciplined stage art, 

based on a centuries-old tradition of movements. 

JAZZ/TAP 

The students will learn leaps, turns and kicks into combinations 

that will leave you breathless as they discover Jazz. 

Keeping with the rhythms tap routines will be taught. 

POM PONS 

Whether it is for school or just plain fun, poms has always 

been a great athletic form of dance to help show school spirit 

for a team. 

HIP HOP 

This widespread and unique form of dance combines Jazz and 

the latest modern club-style steps. Dancers will learn popular 

moves made famous by today’s stars.

Boy Dancers may wear a solid colored T-shirt and shorts and 

Black Ballet, Tap or Jazz shoes appropriate for the class/s.

PATHFINDER HIKES 

Autumn is the perfect time to hit the trails in the 

Chicagoland area. Each week will find the group exploring a

therapeutic recreation program that is an extension of the 

Homewood-Flossmoor Park District. SSSRA is organized to 

provide individuals with special needs or disabilities the opportunity 

to be involved in year round recreation programs. 

SSSRA programs are for individuals from birth through 

adult who are in special education classes, sheltered workshops 

or whom have recreational needs not met by traditional 

park district programs. 

Persons residing in SSSRA member agency communities are 

considered residents. These agencies are: Country Club Hills 

Park District, Frankfort Square Park District, Hazel Crest 

Park District, Homewood-Flossmoor Park District, Lan-Oak 

Park District, Matteson Parks & Recreation Department, 

Oak Forest Park District, Olympia Fields Park District, Park 

Forest Recreation & Parks Department, Richton Park Parks 

& Recreation Department, and Tinley Park-Park District. 

Programs and special events are offered seasonally throughout 

the year. They include programs in the areas of Early 

Childhood Development, Cultural Arts, Illinois Special 

Olympics, Summer Day Camp, Sports & Fitness, Social Programs, 

Adaptive Sports, Special Events and Overnight Trips.

to use a park must purchase a permit. 

If your group wishes to use the shelter/picnic 

tables at Goldberg Park, 

Apollo Park, Leavitt Park, Patriot's Park, 

Ballantrae Park, Irwin Park or Millennium 

Park, this request must be specified 

on your Park Permit form. All other 

park amenities such as the playground, 

ball field and water playground are 

open to the general public. Picnic permits

Registrants and participants of programs 

and events permit the H-F Park 

District and its affiliates to take photos 

and videos of themselves and their children 

for publication in the brochure, 

website and additional uses the district 

deems necessary, unless the registrant 

or participant expressly files with the 

district a written objection as to photos/videos 

of themselves and/or their

Dolphin Lake Precaution 

Swimming and ice skating are never 

allowed at Dolphin Lake. Dolphin 

Lake’s constant undercurrent is dangerous, 

regardless of the season. 

Conditions are never safe for swimming 

or ice skating. 

Fishing Regulations 

All persons fishing on H-F Park District 

property must possess both a 

State of Illinois fishing license (unless 

exempt under state laws) and 

a H-F Park District fishing permit. 

Permits can be purchased at the 

Goldberg Center for $5 resident/$15 

non-resident. Fishing limits are: 

large-mouth bass – catch and release 

only; walleye – 18” minimum 

size limit, two fish limit/day; 

trout – three fish limit/day; and 

bluegill – 6” minimum size limit, 

10 fish limit/day. 

Dogs in Parks 

In general, dogs are allowed in H-F Park 

District’s parks. Dogs must be on a 6-ft. 

leash, and owners must clean up after 

their pet. Dogs are not allowed at Irons 

Oaks or at outdoor special events.

Last year, the HOMEWOOD-FLOSSMOOR 

PARK DISTRICT activated our new real-time registration 

program, WebTrac, at its website, www.hfparks.com. 

New features of this program include expanded search 

capabilities, current program enrollment status and instant 

payment for programs. As you register, you will receive 

an immediate confirmation as soon as the payment 

process is completed. If a class is full, you will be able to 

directly place your name on a waiting list! 

In order for an H-F resident to receive the resident discount 

rate for programs on WebTrac or through traditional 

registration means (telephone, mail in, fax in, in 

person), you will need to reverify your residency status 

with the park district. Proof of residency will be confirmed 

with a current utility bill (electric, gas or water). If 

you are registering dependents, we will need to verify by 

seeing and the top half of your 2008 1040 Tax Return.

Behavior Policy 

To ensure safe and enjoyable programs 

and facilities for all residents, the H-F 

Park District has developed the following 

Code of Conduct. Participants in 

programs and those using facilities 

shall: 

(1) Show respect to all participants, 

staff, equipment, supplies and facilities. 

(2) Refrain from using offensive or 

profane language. 

(3) Refrain from aggressive behavior 

that could cause bodily harm. 

The H-F Park District reserves the right 

to dismiss a participant from a program 

if their behavior or language is 

deemed inappropriate by staff. H-F Park 

District applies a caring and positive approach 

to discipline. Our staff will work 

with South Suburban Special Recreation 

Association (SSSRA) and parents 

when special accommodations are necessary 

due to a participant’s disability. 

H-F Park District reserves the right to 

dismiss a participant whose behavior 

endangers the safety of others or 

causes property damage. 

General Information 

1. Adult programs are open to high 

school students (age 15+), unless otherwise 

stated. 

2. Participant safety is a priority for 

the H-F Park District. All H-F Park 

District employees and instructors 

undergo an Illinois State Police 

criminal background check upon 

employment. 

3. The H-F Park District assumes no 

responsibility for personal injuries or 

loss of personal property while attending 

a H-F Park District-sponsored activity 

or facility. 

4. When H-F Park District programs 

are scheduled at school facilities, 

school programs have priority. On 

school holidays, programs in schools 

will be cancelled and made up at the 

end of the session. See program descriptions 

for cancelled dates. 

5. Foreign exchange students in 

School Districts 153, 161 and 233 are 

allowed free admission to all programs 

except where a contractual service is 

involved. 

6. Participants who display inappropriate 

or potentially harmful behavior will 

be asked to leave the program or facility.

Recreation Refund 

Policies 

1. If any program is cancelled by the 

H-F Park District, the participant will 

receive a full refund. 

2. A $5 service charge will be deducted 

from all refunds over $5 except when a 

medical excuse is presented. 

3. Participants will be allowed to attend 

the first 2 classes and receive a prorated 

refund. Refunds will not be 

issued for cancellations made on or 

after the 3rd third date of program. 

4. No refund will be given for trips less 

than 5 days prior to the trip. 

5. Refunds are issued approximately 10 

business days after program cancellation.

Late Pick-Up & Dismissal: 

Preschool, Extra Innings 

& summer camps 

If you pick up your child 10 minutes 

after dismissal, a $10 fee is charged. One 

dollar is added for each minute after 10 

minutes. Fee must be paid within 24 

hours. Preschool late fees are paid at 

the Irwin Center. Extra Innings and 

camp late fees are paid at Goldberg 

Center or Irwin Center. After four late 

arrivals of 15 minutes or more, staff will 

dismiss the participant from the program. 

This policy is enforced per semester 

for Extra Innings and Preschool, per 

summer for camps.

1. Proof of residence will be checked by 

the H-F Park District. Pre-registration is 

necessary for most programs. Call 708-

4. Classes may be cancelled due to insufficient

programs per brochure season 

(in the Recreation Department 

only). 

6. Non-resident registration will be 

processed one week after resident 

registration. This policy does not include 

adult team sports or non-athletic 

trips. 

7. Participants may be required at any 

time to provide reasonable proof of 

age, residency, martial status or dependency. 

8. Fees will not be prorated when 

registering for a class if the class/session 

has started. 

9. $25 will be charged for returned 

checks. 

10. If you are unable to make a private 

lesson, you must give 24-hour 

notice.With less than 24-hour notice, 

you will be charged. 

11. All team registrations must be 

completed at the Goldberg Center.

is committed to conducting its recreation programs and activities 

in a safe manner and holds the safety of participants 

in high regard. HF Park District continually strives to reduce 

such risks and insists that all participants follow safety rules 

and instructions that are designed to protect the participants’ 

safety. However, participants and parents/guardians 

of minors registering for this program/activity must recognize 

that there is an inherent risk of injury when choosing to 

participate in recreational activities/programs. 

You are solely responsible for determining if you or your 

minor child/ward are physically fit and/or skilled for the activities 

contemplated by this agreement. It is always advisable, 

especially if the participant is pregnant, disabled in any 

way or recently suffered an illness, injury or impairment, to 

consult a physician before undertaking any physical activity. 

Warning of Risk: Recreational activities/programs are intended 

to challenge and engage the physical, mental and 

emotional resources of each participant. Despite careful and 

proper preparation, instruction, medical advice, conditioning 

and equipment, there is still a risk of serious injury when 

participating in any recreational activity/program. Understandably, 

not all hazards and dangers can be foreseen. Depending 

on the particular activity, participants must 

understand that certain risks, dangers and injuries due to inclement 

weather, slipping, falling, poor skill level or conditioning, 

carelessness, horseplay, unsportsmanlike conduct, 

premises defects, inadequate or defective equipment, inadequate 

supervision, instruction or officiating, and all other circumstances 

inherent to indoor and outdoor recreational 

activities/programs exist. In this regard, it must be recognized 

that it is impossible for H-F Park District to guarantee 

absolute safety. 

Waiver & Release of All Claims & Assumption of Risk: Please 

read this form carefully and be aware that in signing up and 

participating in this activity, you will be expressly assuming 

the risk and legal liability and waiving and releasing all 

claims for injuries, damages or loss which you or your minor 

child/ward might sustain as a result of participating in any 

and all activities connected with and associated with and 

this program/activity (including transportation services/vehicle 

operation, when provided).
