Charger Softball Coaching Staff
It’s a new era around Hillsdale College
softball, and a recent graduate is using the
2008 season as a jumping off point to that
new era.
The new head softball coach for the
Chargers is 2007 Hillsdale College graduate
Jamie Meyers. A native of Toledo, Ohio,
Meyers was a four-year starter for the Chargers
from 2004-2007 and ended her career as the
program’s all-time leader in career home runs
with 19. She was a three-time Second Team
All-GLIAC player at shortstop and was team
captain for two years. She was named to the
GLIAC’s All-Academic Softball Team three
times and was the team’s MVP in 2005. Meyers
attended Sylvania Northview High School,
graduating in 2003.
“Jamie is a great addition to our staff,”
said Hillsdale College Athletic Director Dr.
Mike Kovalchik said. “Being able to keep her
as part of the program, this time as a coach, is
a real plus for us. She knows our school and
knows our mission and will maintain those
qualities and requirements in her new role.”
Meyers was named head coach in
September of 2007.
Returning for his second season as an
assistant coach is John Redding. A resident
of Hillsdale, Redding joined the Charger staff
in 2007.
At Toledo
Southview High
School, Meyers
was named All-
District, and was a
member of the
honor roll in every
semester she was
in school.
Meyers
lists former
Charger softball
coach Sunny
Jones as her
coaching role
model.
Redding will assist Jamie in all aspects
of coaching, including running practice drills
and assisting with gameday responsibilities.
Redding is a former head coach at nearby
Hudson High School, and has spent many
years playing and coaching in adult fastpitch
softball leagues throughout the state.
A Q&A with first-year coach Jamie Meyers
Q: Describe the transition you’ve gone
through from being a player last spring, to
becoming the softball program’s head
coach this fall.
A: The transition from being a player to becoming
the program’s head coach has been a big one. I
went from being the one who followed all the
directions to the one giving all the directions
which is a big change. The most difficult part
that came with the change is the fact that I
know almost of the players on the team on a
personal level. It was a hard adjustment to make,
having to coach some of your closest friends
but on the whole I think it has gone more
smoothly than anticipated.
Q: What coaching lessons did you try to
learn as a player, and who was influential
to you from a coaching standpoint?
A: As a player I always tried to be a student of
the game. When I was not playing with my own
teams either in season or during the summer, I
was either coaching or watching my sister’s team
play. The two most influential people to me from
a coach standpoint were Ralph Kreidel who
taught me to play and respect the game in the
right ways when I was younger and Sunny Jones.
I can see the styles of both of these two in the
things I do everyday. Sunny was a mentor to me
when she was my coach here at Hillsdale and has
continued to be so now even though she has
moved on. Most of the administrative things
that I understand how to do and my coaching style
are very similar to Sunny’s. She has been a constant
help to me and someone whom I can always count
on to be there for me to bounce my ideas off of.
The fact that she knows and understands Hillsdale
as well makes her even more of an asset to me.
Q: As a first-year coach, what are your goals
for the 2008 season?
A: My goal for the 2008 season is to bring this
program back up to the level that it needs to be
at. This program has traditionally been very strong
and full of talent and discipline. Historically our
successes have come from pitching and defense.
We had an uncharacteristically bad season last
year and it is my goal to ensure that does not
happen again. As always we want to make the
conference tournament and our schedule is set
up to do so.
Q: How do you feel being a Hillsdale alumn
will help you in the recruiting process?
A: Being a Hillsdale alumn is a definite advantage
when it comes to the recruiting process. The fact
that I did attend Hillsdale and I am a recent grad
allows me to connect on another level with the
recruits that we bring on campus. When I tell
them that it is a challenging academic environment
yet they can still succeed they are more likely to
believe they can succeed, because they are hearing
it from someone who has made it through.
Because I understand Hillsdale’s philosophies and
academic standards also helps in terms of trying
to find kids whom I believe are more likely to
return to Hillsdale following their freshman year.
Although you never truly know what you are
going to get until you get the recruit here for
school, I believe that knowing the school as well
as I do is a big advantage in attempting to pick
out players I feel would be happy here both
athletically and academically.

Director of Athletics
The Hillsdale College sports program, steeped
in winning tradition, promises young men and
women seeking high-level athletic competition an
experience that will make the phrase “student-athlete”
personal and meaningful, rather than a rare
exception or just empty words.
Although small compared to most NCAA Division
II schools, Hillsdale plays “David” among
the “Goliaths.” We kneel to none in our efforts to
compete, while challenging the “best of the best”
in head-to-head competition. Recognized as having
some of the finest programs and facilities in
Division II, Hillsdale athletics have earned a reputation
among the coaching fraternity as the “giantslayer.”
Sport is a universal language; it transcends all
cultures; it has one common denominator—to
strive for excellence.
And when I look back
on sport, I believe it to
be one of the last remaining
bastions where
the Greek ideal of
“Mens sana in corpore
sano—A sound mind in
a sound body” remains
preserved. I believe
Hillsdale College will be
a part of history that
influences not only this
generation, but future generations, a place where
the “mind and body” are challenged and developed.
To parents, relatives, friends or acquaintances
of prospective student-athletes searching for a college
where academic and athletic integrity is maintained
and expected, and where participating in sport
remains a privilege, I extend an invitation to visit
our campus; you will like what you see!
Charger Softball 2008 Outlook
Meyers ready to send
Charger softball team in
upward direction
An offseason of change resulted in a recent graduate of Hillsdale
College being named to take over the softball program.
Jamie Meyers, who graduated in May 2007 as the program’s
all-time home run leader, is the new head coach at Hillsdale, replacing
Becky Martinez, who was in the position for one season. Meyers has
faced a number of challenges in making the short transition from
player to coach, but her passion and knowledge of the game are two
big assets to her as she moves forward with the business of helping
the Chargers win games.
“I know the kind of talent we have, and I know we can compete
with anyone in this conference,” Meyers said. “It’s just a matter of us
going out and doing it.”
Three experienced, talented seniors will set the tone for this
team in 2008. Pitcher Aimee Genter is recovered from an injury that
limited her to just three games in 2007. She hopes to regain the form
she had in 2006, when she broke the school’s single-season strikeout
record, with 199. She provides a steady personality and by-exaple
leadership to the team.
Brecken Libbe is one of the most dangerous hitters in the
Hillsdale lineup. But she’s also valuable for her defensive versatility.
Her quickness and strong arm allow her to play catcher and third
base, two of the most crucial positions in the field in softball.
In her two seasons with the Chargers, Libbe has produced
outstanding offensive seasons, picking up more than 15 doubles in
each season, while belting a total of 10 home runs. She is an intense
player who is a tough out vs. any opposition.
Senior Katie Botsis will move from second base to shortstop
this season. She will enter her third year as a starter, and has also been
a very productive offensive player. She is already in Hillsdale’s career
top-10 runs batted in list, and with another good year, could graduate
as the school’s champion in that category. She’s also a capable home
run hitter, and has a strong and accurate arm in the field.
The junior class is the deepest on the team, though the team’s
only sophomore, could be one of its most well-rounded players.
Junior pitcher Ellen Eldirdge was one of the most pleasant
surprises of the team last year, being pressed into starting duty after
Genter’s injury. She finished with eight wins after getting very little
experience as a freshman in 2006. Eldridge will provide valuable depth
and experience on the mound this season.
Another player coming back from injury figures to boost the
team on offense and defense. Junior Britt Seveyreturns to her previous
position in the outfield. She missed the final two-thirds of the 2007
season with a shoulder injury. Now, she is back to being 100 percent
healthy, and gives the team a good lefthanded bat in the lineup.
Junior Dana Gould has been a mainstay in the outfield since
she arrived on Hillsdale’s campus before the 2006 season. She is an
excellent baserunner and is emerging as a team leader.
Junior Jamie Vandenburgh is another pitcher who throws hard
and will give Meyers another option on the mound. Alyssa Grewcock
has grown into the specialist role of first baseman, and can swing a
hot bat during stretches of the season. Katelin Simon is one of the the
Senior Brecken Libbe’s talent and versatility will be strengths of the Hillsdale
College softball team in 2008.
team’s most vocal leaders, and is a valuable sub for her abiliity to run
the basepaths.
The only sophomore on the Chargers is Devon Trimmer, who
enjoyed an outstanding freshman campaign in 2007. She led the team
with a .373 batting average and stepped into the starting center field
position. Another lefthander, Trimmer has the ability to be among the
top outfielders in the conference over the next three years.
The two members of this year’s freshman class will be counted
on to contribute heavily to any success Hillsdale has this season. Pitcher
Kellie Hirst comes to Hillsdale after an incredible high school career at
Mattawan, just outside of Kalamazoo. Hirst is a powerful pitcher and
hitter, giving the Chargers a rare dual threat in the lineup. Hirst will be
given the ball as a starting pitcher early and often this season, as she
begins her career.
Jordan Kellie, hailing from nearby Adrian High School, will see
plenty of time at catcher. She also figures to step into the middle of
Hillsdale’s lineup to give the team another reliable hitting threat.
The Chargers failed to qualify for the GLIAC Tournament in
2007, and returning to the postseason is just one among many goals
Meyers has in mind for the upcoming season.
“We have to find a way to use all of the talent we have in the best
way possible to win games and be competitive in the GLIAC,” she said.
“I think we have some young players who will go on to set records here.
And our leadership among the seniors is very good. I’m excited to
coach in my first year this year and see what we can do against some
very good competition in the conference.”
Hillsdale opens its season with a trip to Charleston, West Virginia
Feb. 29-March 2. The Chargers make their annual trip to Florida from
March 13-20 before coming back to Michigan to play in Wayne State’s
annual tournament. The team will play its first home game on April 4
against UM-Dearborn.

About the GLIAC
The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) is Michigan’s largest
collegiate league, with 14 members. It was started in the fall of 1972 and since has
grown to include more than 100,000 students and 350,000 alumni.
Recently, four out-of-state schools joined the GLIAC ranks: Ashland University in
Ashland, Ohio; Gannon University and Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pennsylvania,
and Findlay University in Findlay, Ohio.
The league’s charter members are Grand Valley, Ferris State, Lake Superior,
Northwood Institute and Saginaw Valley. Oakland University was added in 1973,
Hillsdale in 1974, Wayne State in 1975 and Michigan Tech in 1979. Northern Michigan
replaced Northwood in 1986, and Northwood rejoined the GLIAC at the beginning
of the 1993-94 season.
Points earned for league athletic championships are counted in competition for the President’s Cup, given for
athletic supremacy in the GLIAC each year. Each season, the conference hosts a softball tournament, which now has
a permanent home in Midland, Mich.
