From the start of his medical career, he emphasised the use of perioprative fluid replacement and it is not surprising that he became an enthusiast of the new i.v. ether anaesthesia method. Wepfer and Diotrich discussed this indication in their review and both were impress& by the results. An advantage was seen in the raoid induction and recovery s well as the l3ck of pulrronary infections in these high risk patients.'0r31 In the UK, Rood had become an enthu3iast for the method. In a detail-ed article, he considsryj its princinal aspcts in comparison with other general methods. This was to pravent cmling of the mtient through the infusion of large volunes of fluids. Like others, he praised t'le inFllsion anaesthetic technique and was most impressed by the stable peri-oprative haemorjynsmics and lack of post-operative vomiting and plumnary irritation.
