Like many of the greatest villains, Count Guglielmo<br />

Libri Carucci dalla Sommaja (1803-69), more<br />

generally known as Guglielmo Libri, <strong>com</strong>bined brilliance<br />

and creativity with deep criminality. An outstanding<br />

mathematician, pioneering historian of<br />

science, political reformer, paleographer and overall<br />

savant, Libri applied his expert knowledge of rare<br />
