The Reverend Frank E. and Irene Butterworth Scholarship 

This scholarship is established to honor Reverend and Mrs. Frank E. Butterworth 

for their dedication to higher education in Hawai‘i and for their support and 

loyalty to Hawai‘i Pacific University. 

In 1963, Dr. Butterworth became a founding trustee for Hawai‘i Loa College and 

after the merger he continued serving as a trustee for Hawai‘i Pacific University. 

He received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in economics at UCLA, but 

chose the Christian ministry for a career, retiring in 1973 as the Superintendent for 

the United Methodist Churches in Hawai‘i. Among many other prestigious 

awards, Dr. Butterworth is the recipient of the 2001 Francis Asbury Award for the 

California Pacific Conference of the United Methodist Church. In recognition of 

his outstanding leadership and contribution to Hawai‘i, the Pacific basin, and to 

the University, he was awarded HPU’s highest accolade, the Fellow of the Pacific 

Award, in 1995. 

Each year Hawai‘i Pacific University will award this interfaith tuition waiver 

scholarship to four (4) new students. The scholarship amount is up to $6,000. 

Deadline for submission of nomination is April 5, 2013. 

Eligibility 

1. Be a current member of any organized religion or faith in Hawai’i or in the 

Pacific Islands. 

2. Demonstrate extracurricular involvement in his/her religious community. 

3. Be nominated by the leadership representing his/her religious organization or 

congregation. 

4. Be accepted as an entering freshman to HPU with a 3.50 high school GPA or 

transfer student (24 college credits) with a 3.00 GPA. 

5. Be pursuing an undergraduate degree. 

Requirements 

1. Submit a completed application for admission to the HPU Admissions Office. 

2. Have a current official transcript from your high school or college sent directly 

to the HPU Admissions Office. 

3. Enclose an essay (one to two pages) describing why you are applying for a 

scholarship and how it would benefit you. 

4. List extracurricular activities (school, community) in which you have been 

involved. Include religious organizations, work experience, civic, or clubs. 

5. Two (2) letters of recommendation. One should be from your minister or 

church affiliate. The other can be from your high school counselor or teacher. 

For transfer students from a college or university it should be a professor.
