1. PRAYER<br />
The Mayor read the following:<br />
<strong>Hume</strong> <strong>City</strong>’s religious diversity strengthens and enriches community life and supports the<br />
well-being of the citizens of <strong>Hume</strong> <strong>City</strong>. <strong>Hume</strong> <strong>City</strong> <strong>Council</strong> acknowledges the importance of<br />
spiritual life and the leadership offered by the <strong>Hume</strong> <strong>City</strong> Inter Faith Leaders Network. In<br />
recognition of the religious diversity of residents in <strong>Hume</strong> <strong>City</strong>, <strong>Council</strong> has invited the Inter<br />
Faith Leaders Network to take responsibility for the opening prayer at <strong>Council</strong> meetings.<br />
This evening’s prayer will be led by Father Michael Wate, from St Dominics Church,<br />
Broadmeadows.<br />
Father Michael Wate read the following prayer.<br />
God Almighty, Our Lord, our gathering today is a sign of your glory and<br />
we praise and worship you as your children, sons and daughters in your<br />
design. Send forth your gracious mercy upon us in the form of your Holy<br />
Spirit to enlighten and inspire the minds and hearts of this <strong>Council</strong>.<br />

INTERESTS:<br />
The Mayor drew attention of <strong>Council</strong>lors to the provisions of the Local Government Act 1989<br />
in relation to the disclosure of interests, conflicts of interests and pecuniary interests.<br />
<strong>Council</strong>lors are required to disclose any interest and to declare any conflict or pecuniary<br />
interest immediately before consideration or discussion of the relevant items.<br />
Cr Geoff Porter declared a perceived interest in item no. AL33 – Sports Aid Grant 2007/2008<br />
Round Two, as one of the sports aid grant recipients is a member of a family that attends the<br />
school at which he works.<br />

your involvement with <strong>Council</strong>’s Alister Clark Memorial Rose Garden,<br />
and your contributions as convener of the Historical Gardens at<br />
Woodlands Committee and member of the <strong>Hume</strong> Environmental<br />

The Mayor advised that Rebekah Ritchie was unable to attend the<br />
meeting and that the certificate would be awarded to her at a later date.<br />
6.3 Occupational Health and Safety Award – Margaret Dorman<br />
The Mayor read the following citation:<br />
The Health and Safety Award is presented on a quarterly basis to<br />
recognise employees or work teams that demonstrate a proactive<br />
approach to improving health, safety and wellbeing within council,<br />
through the development and implementation of a safety initiative or<br />
ongoing commitment to safety improvement.<br />
Nominations for the award are sought from the members of the <strong>Hume</strong><br />
Leaders forum. All nominations are forwarded to the Executive<br />
Management Safety Action Group which determines the recipients of<br />
this award.<br />

This award implements the our <strong>Hume</strong> culture attribute ‘learning and<br />
improving’ and ranks with the employee of the month and the initiative<br />
of the month award as a major council award recognising the actions<br />
and initiatives of employees.<br />
Today we are here to congratulate Margaret Dorman.<br />
Margaret was nominated following the recommendation from her<br />
team leader for obtaining material safety data sheets for all the<br />
chemicals used by the hallkeepers and placing them in an easy to<br />
use folder.<br />
This proactive initiative and approach will assist to provide the<br />
hallkeepers with better awareness regarding the chemicals they use<br />
on a daily basis and the importance of the safe handling of chemicals.<br />
6.4 Certificate of Recognition Building and Works Code of Practice<br />

AWARDS FOR HUME CITY COUNCIL<br />
The Mayor advised that <strong>Hume</strong> <strong>City</strong> <strong>Council</strong> won the Gold Award for the 2006/07 Annual<br />
Report and the Occupational Health and Safety Reporting Award.<br />
The Mayor wished to convey <strong>Council</strong>’s thanks to all the staff who contributed to these award<br />
winning documents.<br />

Would <strong>Council</strong> please advise me as to the total amount of rate payer money has been spent<br />
on overseas trips and accommodation for Cr Gary Jungwirth since the year 2000?<br />
RESPONSE: (Director <strong>City</strong> Governance and Information)<br />
<strong>Council</strong> is required under the Local Government (General) Regulation 2004 to keep<br />
details of overseas and interstate travel undertaken by councillors in the previous<br />
twelve months. The register must include the name of the councillors, the date,<br />
destination, purpose and total cost of the overseas and interstate travel.<br />
<strong>Council</strong>’s current register of interstate and overseas travel is available for inspection<br />
at the Broadmeadows office during normal office hours.<br />
Any overseas trips undertaken by any councillor have been approved by <strong>Council</strong>.<br />
Following such trips a delegates report is presented to <strong>Council</strong> with the learnings and<br />
outcomes relevant and beneficial to <strong>Hume</strong> <strong>City</strong> <strong>Council</strong>.<br />
Locating the records of councillors interstate and overseas travel undertaken between<br />
2000 and 2007 will require some time and a freedom of information request will be<br />
required to locate these documents.<br />

The Mayor advised the <strong>Council</strong> that this was the last Ordinary Meeting at which Mr Wal<br />
Lawson would be attending as the Director <strong>City</strong> Infrastructure. The Mayor thanked Mr<br />
Lawson for his years of dedicated service and wished him well in his retirement.<br />
