“Classic” IP Networks are different • Routing protocols used in Service Providers’ network are link state • Scalability is a must but clearly not the same order of magnitude (most ISIS network are L2 flat) • Convergence time in these networks is key: ~ 10s of ms but link/node characteristics are quite different • Low BER • Immediate triggering (Link layer trigger or Fast KA (BFD) • Use of pre-configured backup path with FRR (IP/MPLS) • Use of dampening in case of rare link flaps • Mix of protection and restoration approach • No need for node metrics/constraints Copyright © 2009 Cisco Systems, Inc.
