Despite having no money, Rupert was able to get back to New York which shows that he did have
an ally in the expedition but this was a false ally — the doctor, who told Rupert he had contracted
leprosy in the south seas and it must be part of the curse (he did have a normal skin rash). When
the doctor killed his uncle, Rupert believed himself cursed and shot himself and referred to the
leprosy in his suicide note which everyone took as being metaphorical, not a reality.
