Trumpets of spring
Daffodils are the stars of the early spring garden,
so enjoy while you can. When they’ve finished
blooming, snip off the dead flowers (so they don’t
set seed) but don’t be tempted to cut off the dying
leaves until they’ve completely yellowed. Daffodil
bulbs replenish their stores for next year’s flowers
from the dying leaves. Keep feeding and watering
for about six weeks after the blooms finish.
TIP It looks neat but resist plaiting the leaves,
as it lessens the area of leaf exposed to the sun.
War on weeds
As the soil warms up and the garden gets
growing so, alas, do the weeds. Weeds not
only look untidy, but they also compete with
your precious plants for nutrients and water.
Be vigilant on weeds during spring and you’ll
save yourself weeding marathons once the
weather really hots up later in the year.
Pick out weeds while they’re still tiny. Now
is a good time to apply a thick layer of mulch,
to not only suppress weeds but also conserve
soil moisture. If weeds get out of hand, consider
a broad spectrum, glyphosate herbicide such
as Yates Zero.
