As part of the development of the information
brochure, the IBIA felt it would be timely to conduct
a survey of the biotechnology industry 4
in Ireland
with the object of establishing at first hand an up-todate
position on their business operations, current
trends and future forecasts. The main findings of the
survey are included (pages 24-29).
In considering the scope of activity supporting the
development of the biotechnology industry in Ireland
a picture emerges of a country that is deeply
committed to becoming one of the world’s leading
biotech hubs and is already well on the way to
becoming recognised as a leading knowledge-based
bio-economy.
The presence in Ireland of a well established global
pharmaceutical industry with annual exports of
€42 billion, combined with recent substantial multinational
biotech investments places the country in a
prime position for the growth and development of
the sector.
Unprecedented state investment in the development
of infrastructure and the creation of a world-class
research environment further advances Ireland
towards its goal of becoming a world leader in
innovation.
4 Terms of reference for selection of
companies surveyed was determined by
the OECD definition of Biotechnology:
“The application of science and
technology to living organisms, as well
as parts, products or models thereof, to
alter living or non-living materials for the
production of knowledge, goods or
materials.”
