Mr. Campbell urged the delegates
that in these rapidly ch:m glOg times
unions must focus on the issues such
as technological change, pensions,
training and rctrainlng and be governed
accordingly when takmg ac·
tion.
In what was descnbcd by Resolution
Committee Chairman K. G. Rose
as the smgle mos t important step
the Canadian Labour movement has
taken, the delegates gave unanimous
support to the esta blishment of a
real estate investment corporation
for union pension funds.
The delegates also unanimously
adopted a resolution to support pension
reform which would guarantee
the retention and growth of multiempl
oyer penSIOn plans.
The delegates gave unanimo us
support to a resolution proposed by
the Executive Council empowering
the Executive Council to proceed
with the creation of union dental
clinics, where demand indicated such
clinics would be feasibl e. A study
conducted by the CFL ExeCUtive
CounCil mdicated that dental COSts
could be reduced by 35-40 percent
by the establi shment of umon-sponsored
denul c1mics.
Resolutions dealing with NatIOnal
Economic Strategies, Cutbacks in
Public Fundmg; Proposal for Federal
Government Gam Sharing Plans;
Worker Savings Institutions; Attack
on OrgaOlzed Labour and many other
matters crucial to the advancement
of the trade uOion movement were
supported by the delegates.
Austin Thorne, business manager
of lBEW Local 1620, S1. John'S, New·
foundland, was elected unanimously
as the Arst fu JI -ti m e secretary-treas·
urer of the Canadian Federation of
Labou.r.

The Honourable Marc Lalonde,
Federal Milllster of Finance, ad·
dressed the de legates on the second
day of the Convention. Mr. Lal onde
indicated the federal government
planned to invite labour representatives
to join the boards of selccted
Crown Corporauons 111 an attempt
to Improve productivity through cooperation.
The Anance mmlster urged
trade unions to pi ck up that cha l­
lenge in order to mcet the needs of
the future.
Several other speakers of note addressed
the de legates mcluding
Thomas d'Aquino, president, Business
Council on National Issues, Mr.
Mike McCraken, preS ident, Informetrlca;
Frank Chalfc, Workers
Commission, Canada Employment
and Immigration Commiss ion; The
Honourable Les Young, Millister of
Labour, Government of Albena;
Brother C liff Evans, vice president,
United Food and Commercial Workers
International Union.
Doctor Ratna Ray, director, Women's
Bureau, Labour Canada, addressed
the Convention on women's
issues.
Doctor Jim Lees acted as the resource
person on the proposal for
uni on dental clinics and addressed
the delega tes on that very important
proposal.
Similarly, M r. Ray Koskie from the
law firm of Koskie and Minsky addressed
the Convenuon regardmg the
real estate Investment proposal.
