Invitation for Research Concept Notes for
Funding by NFBSFARA
The Indian Council of Agricultural Research invites Concept Notes for projects on
research proposals on basic, strategic and applied research in the frontier areas of
sciences that are relevant to agriculture (including livestock and fishery sciences) in the
following major strategic priority areas. The specific areas under each major area are
listed in the website: http://www.icar.org.in/nfbsfara/index.html.
• Strategic Areas: i. Conservation agriculture and climate change ii. Biotic stresses iii. Water
quality and productivity iv. Alternate energy for agriculture v. Micro-nutrients and their use efficiency
vi. Precision and controlled-environment agriculture vii. Use of nanotechnology for agriculture and
studies on environmental safety of this technology viii. RNAi gene silencing technology ix.
Minimization of agricultural waste and maintenance of product quality x. Improvement of fibre quality
in fibre crops xi. Mechanization in horticulture xii. Research in agricultural extension system xiii.
Development of pod borer resistance in pulses.
Research projects will be selected through a two stage competition: Concept Notes and then the
Full Research Proposals developed from the selected Concept Notes.
• Who can submit a proposal: Proposals of projects of three to five years duration can be
submitted by any institution: public, private, or civil society with proven and relevant research
capacity. Any one institute can submit not more than six (6) Concept Notes as the lead institution. A
University or Deemed to be University of ICAR (IARI, IVRI, NDRI, CIFE) can submit up to fifteen
(15) Concept Notes. When these numbers are exceeded the CNs will be automatically rejected on
last-come first-out basis. A scientist who has been awarded a project of NFBSFARA as the Principal
Investigator (PI) and the project is likely to continue beyond 30 th June 2014 should not submit a
Concept Note in response to this call. The proponents should ensure that they are not involved in
too many projects, institutional or extra mural, as a PI or associate.
• Components of expenditure to be funded: The details on types of expenditure eligible for
funding are given on the website. Multi-institutional and multidisciplinary comprehensive project
proposals costing about Rs.2 crores or more will be preferred. Attempt to unjustifiably make the
budget reach Rs. 2 crores will draw negative valuation. Brilliant concepts of projects of smaller
budget than Rs. 2 crores may also be considered in exceptional cases.
• Submission of Concept Note: Concept Notes must be submitted on-line only at the
website: http://nfbsfara.iari.res.in.
