depends upon the collaboration of teachers in both the elementary and secondary
panels. With the Math GAINS Project, our panel of teachers review student work and
EQAO data, and design instructional strategies that cater to the needs of our students
based in these indicators. We’re currently assessing how to promote problem solving in
mathematics, which is a tremendous opportunity for us to grow as a Board.”
Celebrating Student Leadership…
Inspired by Canadian activist Mark Kielberger of the Me to We organization,
the students at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel school started a social justice club to raise
awareness of global issues such as famine, child labour and the recruitment of child
soldiers. Grade 8 student Jessica
Lavery is club co-chair:
“The Social Justice club has allowed
us to reach out to those in need,
learn about topics that affect
everyone, voice our opinions,
support organizations in need and
learn about world issues outside
of the classroom and surrounding
community. We also have learned valuable leadership skills, learned
to work collaboratively as a team, and most importantly learned to
stand up and be heard. Our ultimate goal is that this project and our
enthusiasm will withstand the test of time and continue to grow and
thrive from year to year.”
The Applause Awards are a chance
for the Huron-Perth Catholic
School Board to celebrate the
efforts and achievements of
students whose actions and
presence in their school makes
a very positive difference.
Winners have been selected
because of their actions in class,
in extracurricular activities, or
through their work with others.
Celebrating Improvements
in Student Achievement…
In an effort to provide specific and targeted help for those students falling below the “Level
3” provincial academic standard, Huron-Perth is responding with what is called a “Level 2
Strategy.” Along with fellow Superintendent Dan Parr, Superintendent JoAnn MacGregor
regularly visits schools to support principals and teachers.
“Our student’s success is our number one priority and
through EQAO analysis, report card tracking, and schoolbased
assessments, we are uncovering information
that will assist us in getting our students to the
Level 3 provincial standard.”
“This monitoring allows principals, in turn, to
work with teachers and students. We are
currently working to close the literacy gap
between boys and girls across the system.
We want both genders to improve,
enhancing some aspects of our program
specifically for boys.”
Voices of
our teacher leaders:
“Catholic Leadership Development
in Huron-Perth is empowering and
Christ-centred. Our Ontario Catholic
School Graduate Expectations and
Gospel teachings lay the foundation
for our students’ religious and
academic needs. Not only does the
succession planning of our Board
inspire the vocation of Catholic
Leadership, it also reiterates the
necessity for teachers, administration
and all support staff to articulate the
essential need for Catholic Education
in Ontario. We are not just trained
to be leaders….we are trained to
be effective, and articulate leaders,
embedding the Gospel values in
everything we do!”
