A Global Model <strong>for</strong> Ethical Decision Making<br />
Dr. Rushworth Kidder of the Institute <strong>for</strong> Global Ethics participated in ICFJ’s four ethics<br />
conferences in Latin America, and at each conference, Kidder gave an overview of shared<br />
human values that <strong>for</strong>m ethical frameworks. He also explained the most influential traditions<br />
of moral philosophy, and how they would influence an ethical decision in professional<br />
journalism today. This chapter provides a synopsis of Dr. Kidder’s sessions.<br />
Fundamental Human Values and Journalism Ethics<br />
Ethical practice in general, and in journalism in particular, rests on common<br />
human values. This universal plat<strong>for</strong>m—bridging continents, races and<br />
languages—prevents the discussion of ethics from breaking apart into personal<br />
moralities.<br />
