Editor’s Comments:
I do hope you all generally approve of a 40 page magazine…unfortunately the cover title banner got a
bit lost in background of trees, looked clearer on screen !! I also hope you like the professional
distribution with the carrier sheet (address sheet). The fun part is filling the 40 pages and as I‘ve
pleaded before, don’t be shy in coming forward with info and photos, it is great to feature more from
you, the members and it is particularly pleasing that a high proportion of new members are so
doing…come on you veterans, you must have something to share ?
With the introduction of the new timetable on 5 th Sep yet more interesting workings are now available.
The new Chiltern Railways mainline service from Marylebone – Birmingham Moor Street has been
strengthened and coaches rebranded (see Revised Liveries). London Midland Trains now has use of
Cl.172 DMUs and the new DLR connection between Canning Town and Stratford International is now
in use. With the opening of the Westfield Shopping Centre, towering over Stratford, Southeastern also
took the opportunity to operate 2 additional services an hour between St Pancras Int. and Ebbsfleet
Int. to test its Olympic plans, hence the appropriate cover photo of a Javelin.
As I write this, the bulk of the country is basking
in a late heat wave and even up here it is quite
warm, allowing the ‘estate’ to be mowed before
I hit the road south again, which is where we
will be when you read this. Those that do, I
hope you are out making the most of it. We plan
to call in on some preserved sites that not been
visited before, so that should add more material
to the increasing stockpile of future articles and
photo spots. Hopefully I can also get up to
London this time as so much has happened in
the last few months that I’ve got withdrawal
symptoms ! Haven’t even seen a Cl.379 yet, let
alone a Cl.172 in any TOC livery.
Railway Booking Office Closures by Andrew Woodcock:
The proposal to close hundreds (675) of booking offices in the McNulty Report has prompted much
debate in the media. What a catastrophe this will be in the rush to embrace new technology. By no
means has everyone got a computer be they young or old or even wants one. Many that have are not
very computer literate in using the internet. Many also do not trust booking and giving credit / debit
card details online. How much will it cost in terms of time and money to travel to larger stations to book
your tickets. I wonder if those in the halls of power ever travel by train ? My recent experience at the
beginning of the month on a trip to Porthmadog for the narrow gauge railways show how hard things
are for travellers.
I booked my North and Mid Wales rover ticket at Hebden Bridge one Sunday whilst on my dinner
break from work. A helpful chap assisted me in finding and booking the ticket I required. My ticket to
and from Chester was booked on the internet. With reasonable computer knowledge I still managed in
my search for a cheap ticket to travel from Manchester to Chester the long way round via Northwich.
Other idiosyncrasies appeared on my return journey. Catching a train just after 11.00 from Holyhead I
found an Arriva 2 car Cl.158 packed out with passengers and luggage from the Irish Ferries. Our train
was bound for Birmingham Int. Passengers for the West Coast main line were told to change at
Bangor for the Virgin service. The on-train announcements did not allow for request stops with people
trying to get off at Valley thinking it was Bangor. When they did change at Bangor, the station was
shrouded in scaffolding and lifts and the footbridge were difficult to find. Either of which they had to
use to change platforms. Why does the Virgin train not start at Holyhead save all this hassle ? Also
why not tell people to change at Llandudno Jnct or Chester where the following Virgin train stops at
the same island platform ? Too easy I guess....been there before with my travels, ed. In my own case I
was routed to change at Manchester Oxford Road for my Huddersfield train. I had to change platforms
using the footbridge, no lifts. Not convenient for people less mobile or who have heavy luggage.
Many of you I know will echo Andy’s thoughts and particularly those of us brought up (and survived)
without computers and used to dealing face to face with a human being. Nothing wrong with bringing
in technology to improve efficiency (couldn’t produce Tracks without it), but it should be an aid not a
replacement to people. Even worse when it does away with local knowledge to be replaced with a
system devoid of common sense and the inability to provide all relevant conditions of travel as with
vending machines...and they can’t suggest alternative travel arrangements.
In a similar vein, ICRS has been contacted by Barry Watson concerned over the loss of Ledbury
booking office. His plea highlights the human face of railways that so many unstaffed stations have
lost and desperately needs to be maintained to encourage train travel, particularly from lesser used
rural stations.
“For those that have ever visited the little town of Ledbury on the west of the Malvern Hills or travelled
from there you will be aware of the great little independently run ticket office run from the lovingly
maintained hut on the platform. It has been there for years and the people who staff it are wonderful in
helping people with their tickets to travel not only in the UK but abroad. Under Network Rails
governance this office is set to close. Why, nobody really knows.
Can you give any advice as to how to stop this happening and who to lobby to make most effect. We
have lost our tourist information office and now this...where will it all end. So with the loss of the rail
ticket office Ledbury will lose even more of its identity which makes it such a lovely place to visit on the
train”.
If anyone has any bright ideas or feels impassioned enough to start an online campaign (there you go,
technology to the rescue v technology !!) contact Carl our Chairman who will contact Barry.
Open Day Report
Long Marston Open Weekend, 17 th - 18 th Sep 2011 by Neil Dix:
The annual Long Marston Open Weekend took place this year over the 17 th & 18 th September and
despite the late notice (It was not advertised until early August) there was still a decent turnout.
This year more of the site was open to the public and guided tours lasting almost two hours were
available to see the 'out-of-bounds' areas.
86215 heads a line up of electric locos 86217, 86247 (Europhoenix), 86229, 86242, 87009
86235, 86228, & 86231
The Open weekend was billed as the 70 th anniversary of the Long Marston complex. Opened in 1941,
the site was used as the Central Engineers Depot for the MOD. When the MOD closed the site 1999 it
was purchased by St.Modwen Developments and was re-opened to rail traffic in 2005. Today, Motorail
logistics are responsible for operating the railway at Long Marston. At just under 500 acres, the site is
vast and has a mixture of warehousing, sidings, woodlands, drainage channels, Remnants from the
MOD days and a plentiful supply of rabbit holes! If nature is your thing, it's not just rabbits that will
interest you. Whilst photographing redundant Virgin DVTs, I turned around to see the delightful sight of
two young deer gracefully making their way through the nearby trees. Graceful that is until they saw
me....and then all hell broke loose as they charged full tilt in the opposite direction!
37696 20088 (RFS 2017)
20016 heads a line of locos to 20903, 7 x industrial shunters, 37696, 47829,
20088 (RFS 2017), 20081 & 20057
the other end of the line with
20057, 20081, 20088 (RFS 2017) & 47829
Due to its vast size you really needed to be
there all day if you wanted to see everything as
well as go for a ride on the resident DMU and
join the afternoon tour. It was good to see the
two Europhoenix Cl. 87s on show and not far
away was the test track complete with overhead
wires - something I had not seen at Long
Marston before. Both days were predominantly
dry although Saturday appears to have had
more sunshine. For my visit on Sunday it was
mostly cloudy with a little hazy sunshine and a
short shower mid way through the guided tour
which incidentally was excellently given by
Motorail UK Ltd Chief Executive Ruth Flack-
Dunmore.
An informative programme and stock list was also available, which for some reason listed a number of
locos now in scrap yards or even cut up, however there were plenty of locomotives still on site (see
below). There was also a good supply of industrial shunters and literally hundreds of stored carriages
and wagons, including some of the ill fated EPS Nightstar generator coaches.
bogie oil tanks
Mainline Locos:
87009 / 87017 / 87023 / 87025 Another Cl.20 believed to be 20092 was covered in a tarpaulin.
two of the three Cl.37s on site were 37415 &, 37428 (with RMC 0-6-0 industrial shunter)
0-4-0 Sentinel HO14 0-6-0s ‘Rachael’, N/K & NCB 503
In some press reports it has been indicated that this was to be the last Open Weekend at long
Marston. There are a number of projects in the pipeline and some new storage sidings planned so
even if there are other Open Weekends in the future, this probably was the last time the public would
see Long Marston in its current form. For me personally, old MOD sites hold great interest and Long
Marston is one of the best.
Light Rail, Metro & Tram News
Blackpool: 8 th Sep saw launch of new Flexity2 tram 001 outside Starr Gate Depot, an articulated 5
piece tram with seating for 72. It is the first of its kind in the world and is the first of a 16 strong order
from Bombardier to bring the Blackpool fleet in line with new accessibility regulations, due to come into
force in 2019. It will undergo extensive testing with tram 002 arriving later in the year.
Edinburgh: The sorry tale of this blighted project continues with a new agreement reached between
the contractors and Edinburgh City Council after the Scottish Government stepped in. Transport for
Scotland is to help. Following the council decision on 2 nd Sep, at least the tracks will now extend
beyond Haymarket from the Airport into St Andrew Square adjacent Waverley Station. However at
least 20 ordered trams may now be surplus to requirements if planned extensions are not now built.
Princes Street is now being ripped up again to repair the track / road interface which has crumbled
with the constant bus traffic...without a tram yet having run !!!
Docklands Light Railway: The former East London Line from Stratford to Canning Town has now reopened
as a further part of the DLR and extends through to Stratford International. This new extension
to the DLR system opened on the 31 st August.
Manchester Metrolink: With 6 years still on its contract. Stagecoach Metrolink has been sold to
RATP Regie Autonome des Transports Parisiens). This is the third operator in 4 years, previously
Serco up to 2007 and is yet another British transport undertaking in non UK hands.
Ramblings of a Rail Enthusiast
by David Spencer – 1964 Part 3
May: This was very much a Celtic month with three Welsh trips, including two rail tours and a week in
Scotland which began on the 2 nd with the SLS 'Last train to Brecon'. For my haulage from Birmingham
to Gloucester I have written two type 4 diesels, which I assume means a double headed Peak. This
was followed by D1072 haulage to Cardiff. I've mentioned ticket hunting before and to fill in time I went
to Penarth, Dingle Road and Sully before a trip to Barry Town and back to Cardiff. Leaving at 11.15
behind 6606 we travelled up to Merthyr Tydfil where we reversed and changed engines to 3650 and
4555 for the main tour. We set off via Cefn Coed and Pontsticill Junction with photo stops at Torpantu
and Talybont and then onto Brecon. There was a brand new TV channel called BBC2 which I had
never seen as it was only available in the London area but it had a programme on hobbies and so
cameras were at Brecon to witness our departure. As Roger and I hogged the windows on the last
coach, we must have appeared on TV as we leaned out to take a final picture of the station. On the
return we stopped at Pontsticill Junction then on to Dowlais Central. Two more reversals got us back
to Merthyr and 6606 was waiting to return us to Cardiff. It was a sad day as almost all of my beloved
B&M was closed although I still had two thirds of it to walk, which I did by the end of the year, and
thumbed a lift on one of the remaining sections later on. Bassaleg Junction to Machen of course still
survives today. We returned home on a cross country DMU via Hereford.
On the 7 th the following Thursday, I was back in South Wales again with D49 haulage to Gloucester
and D1025 on to Cardiff where I got a DMU up to Treherbert the aim was the remaining bits of the
South Wales Mineral Railway lines to Tonmawr and Glyncorrwg both of which I achieved. First I went
round the shed to seek out the crew and get permission to travel, which as usual was given and my
train was two brake vans propelled by 9606 and 9787, formed this way to save the guards from smoke
inhalation whilst going through Rhondda Tunnel. At Cymmer Afan the train split. I remained with 9787
whilst 9606 took the other brake van elsewhere; Duffryn Rhondda if I recall correctly.
Hawksworth 0-6-0PT 9787 (w/d 09/64), Cwmavon, 7 May 1964
We went down the Avon valley to Cwmavon (Glam) station on ex Rhondda and Swansea Bay tracks
and there I had to wait whilst the crew had a breakfast break. To kill time I went into the box and was
given the gradient profile off the wall. Which was a blessing as the weather broke later on and it
helped me keep dry! Demolition trains were already lifting track after Cwmavon and it would not be
long before they started on the tracks I was travelling over. Then we set off back up the valley to
Oakwood and branched onto the PTR track across the valley to join the SWMR line to the colliery at
Tonmawr, photographing various relics of former prosperous times. After thanking the crew we set off
to walk the track bed to Cymmer. Tonmawr Tunnel was bricked up so I had to go round and so
inspected the wreck of Pontrhydyfan station on the R&SB and found a GWR ticket issuing book in
good condition. The SWMR track bed was an unprotected shelf on the hillside and when the heavens
opened I had nowhere to hide so had no choice but to walk on until I reached Cymmercorrwg where a
link from the GW Lynfi valley line came across Cymmer Viaduct. I had to catch a bus up to
Glyncorrwgto find an unadvertised workman’s service worked by 3654 up to North Rhondda Halt
which had no road connection. It provided a continuous shuttle at shift change times and I went up
and down three times before walking down the track to Cymmercorrwg and across the viaduct to catch
a train down to Maesteg. I had walked part of the Port Talbot Railway as far as Cwmdu where the
track ended before but today I decided to do the whole line. Thirty two years after closure it was not
the easiest walk often just a soggy bog in the cuttings. At the intermediate station of Letty Brongu the
station was intact and fenced off so I photographed what I could and made my way round to continue
when an irate Welshman came running after me accusing me of being a council spy and taking
sneaky pictures of his home. I convinced him after a while that I was a harmless railway buff and that I
was just walking from Maesteg to Llangeinor and so I continued….yeah we’ve all been there, ed.
Nothing to do with railways but an amazing coincidence then occurred, a real 'it's a small world' event.
I reached Llangeinor Junction on the GWR Garw Valley line from Tondu and Bridgend and I asked a
motorist if there were any buses into Bridgend to which he offered a me a lift. The conversation went
'Where do you come from?' Birmingham 'Oh whereabouts' Well its Solihull actually Oh whereabouts'
Olton 'Oh what road' I said Kineton Green Road. In our local paper there had been an article about a
little girl taking a lamb for a walk who I had seen regularly as they only lived about ten houses from me
and it was the couple in the car who had given the girl that lamb. The odds must have been many
thousands to one of me meeting them like that! A Western took me back to Cardiff and bed.
The next day, the 8 th was part two of my walking the B&M. A DMU took me to Bargoed and I set off up
what started off as Rhymney track as far as Deri Junction where the B&M had an end on junction. This
was still double track in use and I was lucky to see two coal trains both with bankers heading for
Ogilvie Colliery. This section had only three stations and very much over desolate moorland but it was
still a very enjoyable walk as far as Dowlais Top, I then inspected the remains of the LNWR Dowlais
High Street before heading for Dowlais Cae Harris. Hoping for a lift, I was lucky and had a cab ride as
5655 went down to Nelson and Llancaich where 3634 took me on a normal passenger train to
Pontypool Road. From there D1722 was haulage to Hereford where a DMU got me home.
On the 12 th I am intrigued to read I went photographing (to see girls?) certainly I took a photo of 3834
but who the girls where I haven't a clue and they appear equally mysteriously later in the year!
The SLS ran another great South Wales rail tour on 16 th well its west Wales actually and we set off the
night before the usual way with D51 to Gloucester and D1032 onto Cardiff and Swansea. After
reversal we had D1064 and D7038 onto Llanelly but we must have arrived very early in the morning
as the rail tour was due to leave Pembury and Burry Port at 10.00 and we had time to look around and
photograph Llanelly dock, the two train engines on Llanelly shed, catch a DMU to and have a look
around Gowerton, change stations and get a train to Pontardulas Junction with 9654 and back to
Swansea Victoria behind 45154 and get another DMU to catch the special at Pembury on time.
Starting at Burry Port BPGV station we had 1665 for haulage and a mixture of mineral wagons and
brake vans to take us up the BPGV line to Cwmmawr. This line later became well known for triple
headed Cl.03s and later the cut down cab 08s in the 0899X series, which are still with us today.
Constructed on the bed of a canal it had very restricted headroom and apart from their own BPGV
engines only the 2021 class and later 16XX panniers could work the line.
Hawksworth 0-6-0PT 1665 (w/d 07/64), Burry Port, 16 May 1964
At Cwmmawr we had to walk up to Cross Hands the terminus of the L&MM line and had 1665 and
more brake vans and wagons down to Sandy Junction. We then switched to a DMU to cover the
Newcastle Ernlyn and Aberayron branches, both of which branched off the Carmarthen to Aberystwyth
line which in itself I had only visited once before. It was a great trip with each of the four branches
being new to me. Home then beckoned and we had D7029 to Swansea, D1035 onto Gloucester and
D19 to Birmingham.
1665 + brake van, 2 x 5pl mineral wagons + brake van, SLS tour, Tumble 16 May 1964
(note ladders for access to mineral wagons)
The month ended with a Freedom of Scotland ticket and whilst the last one was a spotting trip this one
was strictly a track bash…but that’s for next installment…and a fascinating read it is of long lost
branches and some great photos of early Scottish based diesels, ed.
Rail Tour News
The Pompey Pacific by Mark Richards:
56302 was seen making its way to Dereham
piloting 37219 on maroon stock from
Wymondham Abbey, after running as 0Z56
from Barrow Hill today.
On Saturday 10 th September 2011, BR Standard Class 7 70000 ‘Britannia’ made its first visit to
Portsmouth with 1Z34 07.00 Taunton to Portsmouth Harbour ‘The Pompey Pacific.’ Not only was this
Britannia’s first visit to Portsmouth, it was also the first visit of a steam loco to Portsmouth Harbour for
some years.
Due to weight restrictions on the pier, loco hauled trains are
prohibited from using platforms 1 and 3 at Portsmouth
Harbour. This caused a few operational issues on the day
as an HST with 43030 and 43181 working a private charter
from Hereford was also booked into Portsmouth Harbour.
As both this and ‘The Pompey Pacific’ had to use platform
4, this required the HST to be disembarked and dispatched
to Fratton in under 10 minutes!
Running a few minutes down on
its booked 12.39 arrival, 70000
made a magnificent sight, even
under leaden and drizzly skies,
as it pulled into the Harbour to a
waiting throng of enthusiasts and
residents that had come to see
this historic loco. Resplendent in
BR Black, it was noted that the
nameplates had for some reason
been removed from the smoke
deflectors. However, the engine
was carrying a special ‘The
Pompey Pacific’ headboard.
Built in January 1951, 70000
was initially allocated to
Stratford shed, East London,
for use on the Liverpool Street
to Norwich expresses. For
many years the cab roof was
painted white to mark the fact
that 70000 was used to haul
the funeral train of George VI
from Norfolk to London in 1952.
Britannia was withdrawn from
service in May 1966 and
returned to mainline operation
in July 1991.
70000 ‘Britannia’ arriving at
Portsmouth Harbour
Mark Richards
66197 running light engine from Eastleigh followed the charter from Fratton attaching to the rear of the
train at Portsmouth Harbour. Running as 5Z34, the 66 then took the empty stock and 70000 to Fratton
sidings where. 70000 was serviced and refuelled before being turned as 0Z70 Fratton SS (Stabling
Siding) to Fratton SS running via Portcreek Jnct, Cosham, Fareham, Fareham North Jnct, Fareham,
Cosham, Havant and Portcreek Jnct.
With the return working booked at 16.52 from Portsmouth Harbour, 66197 brought the empty stock
and the turned 70000 into Platform 4 a few minutes after 43030 and 43181 had departed with their
charter back to Hereford. The weather remained unkind, with the departure being under grey skies
with a light drizzle. The dampness caused 70000 to slip as it restarted its load of 10 coaches but what
a terrific sight and sound as it found its footing and stormed its way out of the platform! 66197 was
detached on arrival at the Harbour and followed a few minutes later, light engine to Eastleigh.
Days Out - 1
North York Moors Railway, 31 st Aug 2011 by Ian Sant:
I have provided additional information (in italics) and photos particularly of what can be seen at
Grosmont for those wishing to visit...ed.
My wife and I decided to spend a few days in Scarborough. For a day out we decided to try the North
Yorkshire Moors Railway. Scarborough to Pickering is about 55 minutes on bus number 128,
departing at 09.45 and getting off at Ropery Road from where it is only a short walk to Pickering
Station. We arrived in good time for the 11.00 departure to Grosmont. At this time of day, trains run
hourly, but at other times of the year they are less frequent.
Q6 0-8-0 63395 running around its train at Pickering before our journey
Ian Sant
The journey to Grosmont takes 1 hour and 5 minutes but we were almost 10 minutes late leaving in
the hands of Q6 0-8-0 63395. Passing through some of the beautiful North Yorkshire Moors scenery,
there were stops at Levisham and Goathland which are both passing places for trains in the opposite
direction. On leaving Pickering we saw shunter 08850 and Cl.24 D5061. At Levisham we passed G2
0-8-0 49395 and at Goathland we passed Standard 4MT 2-6-4T 80072. Also at Goathland was Cl.25
D7628 ‘Sybilla’ and Cl. 31 31128 ‘Charybdis’ and beyond the station we saw Metropolitan Cammell
first generation DMU comprising vehicles 51511, 59539 and 50204. Just before entering Grosmont
Tunnel are the main locomotive sheds and visible outside were 12139 ‘Neil D Barker’, 50027 ‘Lion’
and 37264 (the latter two numbers were not visible, as they were behind other vehicles, but they are
assumed). Also seen were a number of what I presume are Austerity locomotives (one is of Polish
origin) plus the frame of 2-8-0 2884.
Getting off at Grosmont, Black 5 4-6-0 44767 ‘George Stephenson’ was seen sitting on an adjacent
platform. Here there was time to walk back through the oldest horse-drawn railway tunnel (built
between 1833 and 1835 by George Stephenson) alongside Grosmont Tunnel to the shed. Here you
can view the main running shed by way of stairs which lead up to a shop from where there is also a
viewing window to the workshop. Inside the 2 track running shed were A4 4-6-2 60007 ‘Sir Nigel
Gresley’, Black 5 4-6-0 45428 ‘Eric Treacy’, 9F 2-10-0 92214 ‘Cock O’The North’ and Maunsell S15 4-
6-0 825. In the workshop was West Country 4-6-2 34101 ‘Hartland’ plus one other, unidentified.
Walking around the side of the running shed there is further reasonable access to view the other end
of the running shed, stock sidings, a covered ‘Nissan’ style workshop, coaling stage and the Deviation
shed. The walkway to the latter is adjacent the running line with good views of approaching trains from
Pickering and back to Grosmont Tunnel and the workshops. Info on NELPG locos is provided on a
board inside the Deviation shed....ed.
& 2-6-4T 80135 on the right, the left hand track
Back at the station we waited for the
13.10 to Whitby, which was hauled from
Pickering to Grosmont by G2 0-8-0
49395. This then detached to be
replaced by Black 5 4-6-0 44767
‘George Stephenson’ which continued
on the 25 minute journey to Whitby.
This then gave us 2½ hours in the very
pleasant resort of Whitby.
Northern Rail 156438 arriving at
Grosmont on a service from Whitby,
26 May 2011
the NYM station is to the left
Our return was via Northern Rail 156480 on the 16.05 service to Middlesbrough. Dropping off at
Grosmont, we picked up the 16.30 service headed by 4MT 2-6-4T 80072 back to Pickering where we
arrived at 17.40. One interesting note is that locomotives all face forward when travelling to Pickering
and tender first when travelling towards Grosmont and Whitby.
With an hour to wait for the 18.40 bus back to Scarborough we contemplated what had been a very
pleasant way to spend a day.
Days Out - 2
Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways 5-7 th Sep 2011 by Andy Woodcock:
I decided to go to North Wales to achieve my second aim of 2011 to travel the full length of the Welsh
Highland Railway (WHR). The best way was to travel to and stop in Porthmadog. The hotels in the
town are not cheap but this was offset by being able to avoid parking charges of £7.50 a day. I
travelled out on the 5 th via Llandudno Jnct and on to Blaenau to catch the Ffestiniog Railway (FR) to
Porthmadog. Officially this year the rover ticket allows you 50% off on both railways but some on train
staff are still using last year’s free travel on the FR. On the FR two Fairlies, ‘Blanche’ and ‘Linda’ were
in use. Stock was seen at Minfford and Boston Lodge.
In Porthmadog there had been heavy rainfall which continued overnight. In view of the weather I
booked in to my hotel and returned to the railway’s Spooners Bar. It makes a substantial contribution
to the railways finances. Alcohol is cheaper than in town and the meals are excellent value as
evidenced by plenty of customers including public, enthusiasts and railway staff after work, the latter
being a good advert. One interesting feature of the Bar is ‘Princess’ an 0-4-0STT in one corner, ed !!
Tuesday 6 th was my day on the WHR with 2 Garratts in use. The day was reasonably dry and the ride
was well worth the money. The scenery was unbelievable with streams and rivers like torrents, fields
flooded with animals stranded on islands, cascading water down the hillsides, hilltops partly shrouded
in mist but with sun glinting through. Truly a memorable trip.
To travel the full line you need to be on the first morning train and the last one back at night. Other
trains stop and start at Pont except for a teatime diesel hauled shuttle in the high season only. The
train working is interesting. The train loco draws the train into the main station and when ready to
leave any available loco attaches at the rear and draws the train onto the Cob where it then detaches
and the train proceeds through the town. On return the same routine takes place.
On my trip due to heavy flooding including the
car park, the open top bus shuttle between Pont
and Porthmadog was cancelled (the details of
this service are not on the main train timetable
but hidden away on another page). Our bus
was replaced by a two coach train top & tailed
by 0-6-0DH ‘Criccieth Castle’ & Bo-Bo ‘Vale of
Ffestiniog’. Someone with a sense of humour
had made a notice ‘BUS REPLACEMENT
SERVICE’ for the cab of Criccieth Castle’ (see
photo right, from Andy Woodcock) which
amused us all.
O n arrival back in Porthmadog I walked to the
BR station and caught a Cl.158 to Minfford. I
was able to ride the FR back to town and check
locos etc I had seen. Then the teatime diesel
Shuttle to Pont and back. After this I retired to
Spooners Bar to eat and drink.
On Wed 7 th I decided to catch the bus to Bangor, in case the Conway Valley line was flooded, then
ride to Holyhead and then home. Noted on the way home was a Cl.66 loading stone at Penmaenmawr
plus 60071 on Warrington depot.
I went armed with an IRS stocklist, but the railway has an excellent stock book (A4size and 40 pages)
full of illustrations and detail. I only had difficulty in identifying just two items; a large steam loco partly
stripped in the yard at Dinas and further down the yard a small yellow diesel No 2. Lists show two ex
Shotton Steel Works Hunslet diesels Nos 1 & 2 of 1985 on site. The railway knows them as ‘Bill’ and
‘Ben’. Logically as it had not been repainted, I guess it was ‘Ben’.
On my way home from Oxford Rd to Huddersfield I had an amusing encounter. A young man on the
opposite table who obviously thought he was better that the rest of us, was spread out with his phone
and laptop etc. At Manchester Piccadilly there was a crew change and it was announced a ticket
check would take place. When the checker appeared he had to interrupt this man who was quite
indignant at having to endure another check. Imagine my amusement when the checker found his
students card was out of date and threatened to charge him full fare cause him to squirm. Sadly the
checker let him off and told him to get it renewed asap.
An enjoyable few days holiday
To whet your appetite here is the first in a series on rolling stock in NSE livery.
Cl.08:
Only three Cl.08s were ever painted in NSE livery, 08631 ‘Eagle CURC’, 08600 & 08641. All three
locos are remarkably still extant with one each in preservation, industrial and TOC use.
Of the three, 08631 (D3798) was the first so treated in 1988 when it was also named ‘Eagle CURC’ on
the 2 nd May at Cambridge. It is not known when it was withdrawn from BR but it is now preserved on
the Mid Norfolk Railway, where it still carries its NSE livery
25 June 2011
08600 (D3767) was withdrawn in Jul 1999 and is now owned by the logistics company AV Dawson in
Middlesborough. It had an interesting career as it became a departmental shunter in 1979 under BR,
re-numbered 97800, it operated at Slade Green depot where it was named ‘Ivor’ between 1 st Jan
1986 and 31 st Dec 1987. In 1990 it returned to capital stock as 08600. It is currently painted red.
08641 (D3808) is still operating on the national network but now as part of the First Great Western
fleet and based at Laira depot. It has carried various names, ‘Laira’ from 1 st Jan 1986 which changed
to ‘Dartmoor’ on 1 st Jan 1987. It is currently painted FGW indigo blue.
Gloucestershire Sightings
The following sightings are mostly from Gloucester Station, but also include workings on the avoiding
line southeast of the station between Barnwood and Gloucester Yard Jncts. Only freight and notable
loco hauled workings are shown with the diagram code, time (if known) plus origin and destination
(see location codes).
JAPAN, 12 th – 27 th May 2011 – Part 2:
Monday 16 th May 2011:
This morning’s coach trip was to the Chubu Sangaku National Park at Kamikochi for tree spotting. It
actually turned out good as the area is home to many wild monkeys that played within yards of us. We
were supposed to take the coach back to Matsumoto. However, there is a private railway halfway
back. A company called the Matsuden so we all got off the coach at the far terminal, Shinshimashima,
then took the train back. Another pleasant 2 hours on the platform sitting in the sun. Of note, the train
announcer almost sings the name Matsumoto over the station announcement system when the trains
arrive, quite fun to hear.
Tuesday 17 th May 2011:
Now onto Okayama via Nagoya again, but via a different route. Our hotel was above the station and
outside was Japans shortest tram system only 4.7km in length. We rode it to the far end where the
depot was. No problem having a look round. At first I kept thinking how strange seeing all the doyen
trams, 7001, 7101, 7201, 7401, 7701 then along came 7102. All became clear. The first 2 numbers
were the year it entered service and the second 2 was the number!
Now to the station. Like many Japanese stations there are 2 levels. The lower for all main line and
local and the higher for the Shinkansens. I chose the lower with more choice and a freight came
through. There are just under 600 electric and 400 diesel locomotives in Japan, nearly all used on
freight which is basically container and fuel trains.

On to Shikoku, the other island on our itinerary. After leaving Okayama we crossed the Seto-Ohashi
Bridge on to Shikoku. This is one of three bridges that link Shikoku with Honshu but the only rail one. It
is actually a six section, double deck bridge (road above, rail below) using five small islands as
supports and crossing the Pacific Ocean.
Kochi on Shikoku has a reasonable sized
tram system. I visited one of the depots
and photographed 615 with tram 198
(on the right under cover) which was originally
part of the Oslo system 18 May 2011
we travelled to Uwajima on a single car
for over half an hour for another train to pass
18 May 2011
Our destination was Uwajima and our journey was the clockwise scenic route stopping for nearly two
and a half hours at Kochi for lunch. This station was not a busy one but the town has a large tram
network. Most of us took a ride to one of the termini and happened to pass a large depot which we
went back to and asked to look around. No problem. The system has 68 trams with some imports, 198
from Oslo, 320 from Graz, 735 from Stuttgart and 910 from Lisbon. Back to the station and on to
Uwajima for our overnight stay. The hotel was above the station. This was a very quiet station with
very little happening. Above the hotel was an ‘eat and drink as much as you can’ Japanese buffet, so
the night was spent there.

Thursday 19 th May 2011:
An uneventful journey ensued to Matsuyama, the largest city on the island. Adjacent to the station was
the first electric locomotive seen there at the container depot. This was not a busy station. We had a
day pass for the trams and a cable car ride to the castle. After that we were treated to a ride on the
tram system behind a steam outline tram that was powered by a forklift engine (see photographs).
There was a local railway there as well yet I spent some time riding the trams.
Friday 20 th May 2011: Hiroshima.
We took a local train to the port before boarding a fast ferry to Hiroshima. The tour there started with a
visit to the Peace Memorial Park and museum. This is the site of the A-Bomb Dome that was directly
below the bomb when it exploded, yet the shell remained. Looking at the city today and seeing the
photographs taken after the explosion it is very hard to accept that this was the same place. I had
been here before in 2007, yet I had to see it again.
there is also a local railway serving Matsuama
A view of one of many Hiroshema
tram depots, 20 May 2011
Hiroshima also has the largest tram system in Japan. It has a centralised control system and a fleet of
over 300 cars. We used the trams to get to our hotel from the station. The station is fairly busy with
freights as well as local passenger services. The higher Shinkansen station cannot be seen from the
lower. Adjacent to the station was a shopping complex with a large book department where I found a
book, with CD that detailed numbers and classes for Japan Railways. Pity it was in Japanese. This will
give me something to do in the winter nights.
ICRS Publications
Five brand new 2011 books are now available, UK Combine Summer Ed, UK Locomotives, Diesel Units, Electric
Units and Irish Railways. Please note the latter four books are small print runs, so if you don’t want to miss out,
order yours now. The individual books have additional carriage number to unit number cross ref tables, not found in
the Combine and are very useful. As for future titles, an eagerly awaited updated Ultimate Sighting File is in
preparation for release during 2012 and will combine all locos into one book rather than the 3 previously published.
Copies of all books can be either ordered via PayPal online at www.icrs.org.uk or by cheque (made payable to
ICRS) direct from Carl Watson (see page 2 for contact details).
All books, except A6 Pocket Datafiles, are A5 wire bound printed on 90gm paper with laminated card covers allowing
them to be laid flat.
